Forget ‘anti-vaxxers.’ The Disney measles outbreak could change the minds of an even more crucial group. The child was behind on her vaccinations. Wendy Sue Swanson took note of this as she talked with the girl’s parents last week at a medical clinic in Mill Creek, Wash., outside Seattle. Swanson, like many pediatricians, sometimes needed to coax parents to get the shots for their children. A few might be unmovable in their objections. But most were like this couple: A mom and dad who might harbor doubts or were just behind schedule. They were at least willing to listen. Now, Swanson had a new way to prod parents like them: Discussing the Disney measles outbreak in California, which has spread to at least 68 people in 11 states since Jan. 1 and raised alarms about the reemergence of a disease once considered all but vanquished. There was something powerful about the disease hitting a popular, recognizable vacation spot. The girl got her vaccination. Her parents were on board. “Their eagerness was different,” Swanson said later. “I think it is changing people.” Much of the scrutiny in the Disney measles outbreak has fallen on an entrenched anti-vaccination movement in places such as Orange County, Calif., home to the two Disney theme parks where the outbreak gained its foothold. These “anti-vaxxers” are viewed as dead-set against vaccinations. But doctors believe the current outbreak could change the minds of a less-known but even larger group: parents who remain on the fence about the shots. These “vaccine-hesitant” parents have some doubt about vaccinations, leading them to question or skip some shots, stagger their delivery or delay them beyond the recommended schedule. An estimated 5 to 11 percent of U.S. parents have skipped at least one vaccination or delayed a shot, according to studies. That compares to only 1 to 3 percent of parents who object to all vaccinations. |
Oh?
They also have a great epsiode on chiropractors. And one on bottled water.

I need to check out the Chiro one then, since i am on the verge of starting to use one regularly
She probably won't because I'm sure her parents got her vaccinated.
Oh really? Please tell us what was it then?
When a significant enough percentage of those who can get it and would have responded to it don't, that herd immunity is compromised to the point of outbreak.
So, yes, this has everything to do with the unvaccinated.
There are a number of articles on this ongoing incident, but the linked Wired.com article does a good job of what so many have been talking about with regards to the herd community concept.

Please try not to use anything resembling ration thought and facts. They aren't interested sadly.

This had zero to do with the unvaccinated .
A spread almost always has SOMETHING to do with the unvaccinated since there is a pretty small liklihood that a fully vaccinated person will catch measles. we are talking about a virus that was nearly totally eradicated in developed nations here.

Here you go. It's about alternative medicine in general and it's in 3 parts on youtube. Here is the first one.

That's one of topics that have been well covered as to why vaccination is so important. Those who either are too young or have some kind of autoimmune conditions that prevents them from getting the vaccine are especially vulnerable. And those who choose not to get their kids vaccinated are putting these most vulnerable people at heighten risk...and for what? Because they are idiots following some junk (fraudulent) medical study? Or because they get their medical advice from other idiots with big tits?
Not vaccinating your kid for your own selfish and stupid reason should be grounds for child abuse charge...almost as bad as those faith healers.

that there are some that are too young to get the vaccine and they also happen to be the most vulnerable if they do get measles. The vaccine isn't given until age 12 months and with a place like Disneyland, it's quite likely there are a number of unvaccinated infants there with older siblings.

One of my best friends has a child who is immunocompromised and can't get vaccinated, at least not yet. The highlight of her year is taking her kids to Disney World. Probalby a safe bet that isn't going to happen this year.
I loved the bottled water one.
I haven't watched it, but I think the lack of use of pesticide's etc is a large motivation for purchasing organic and not necessarily because of the taste.

That is absolutely true steve.
Didn't Kimmel do a street question session regarding people's understanding of "gluten free" diet. It's rather funny.
And there are many people not suffering from Celiac disease, who think that gluten free diet is the way to go without even really understanding what it is. It's trendy.

Is this a picture of his teeth?
Officials with the Alameda County Public Health Department have contacted 500 people possibly connected to measles patients, and have asked parents of the 30 infants to keep their children home to avoid further exposure to the illness.
Department spokeswoman Sherri Willis told the LA Times that the babies are not infected, but had some contact or connection to measles patients in Alameda County.
“It is our job to try to determine who has been exposed,” Willis told the newspaper.
There are 87 confirmed cases across seven states and Mexico, and officials say most of the cases are in California. There are five confirmed cases in Alameda County, four of which are linked to the Disneyland outbreak, according to the LA Times.
“Measles is in the community,” Willis told the newspaper. “You don’t have to be connected,” she said.
Measles has been spreading since an outbreak linked to visits to California Disney parks last month. Most of those infected were not vaccinated, and health officials have urged people to get the shot.

So...we going to get any follow-up on this bullshit or no?

He may be one of those chiropractors that believe that most illness can be cured naturally without medicine.

Then I hope he doesn't watch that Penn and Teller episode?
Her measles titer is low, and we can't get her re-vaccinated for a while.
So, with these scares, I'm not even going to consider large-scale theme parks.
Thanks, but we're in CA.
Going to see some natural wonders out here instead.

I don't think so. This was a drive-by flinging of bullshit.
By the way, I actually do have some sympathetic feelings toward vaccine safety skepticism. It's not as though there isn't ample precedent for something widely accepted as safe later being known to be dangerous.
But in this case, I'm afraid you've got to accept that the known danger of the disease trumps the slight chance that the cure is worse.

Exactly, I will admit I was nervous each time my children had to go through it, but we still did it.
How could you know? dont worry about it. The real story is that my sisters and I are the ones who did not get the flouride and we have a total of two cavities between the three of us. So... the flouride was a non factor.
No issues at all in Disneyworld. Was there two weeks ago and going back again in two weeks.

So you don't drink water from the municipal water supply or use toothpaste with flouride?

No problem.
If you've been drinking tap water since the 1950s, you have been getting fluoride without having to use fluoride rinse. That and brushing your teeth regularly (hopefully with fluoride toothpaste) is why you and your sister haven't had many cavities.
I was on CNN.com yesterday and saw this short video on an Idaho based Follower of Christ church. Not only are children (and adults) dying of curable ailments/diseases as result of the church's restriction on any medical treatments but the government can't do anything about this to ensure the safety of those needing medical attention or even punish those parents who allow their children to die when simple medical attention would have saved them.
As a parent...I'm dumbfounded when I watch or read stories about stuff like this.

A big flood was coming and the water started to rise near his home. His neighbor said to him "come with us we have room in our car" but the man said "no I have faith God will save me". As the water started to rise higher he went to the second floor of his home and a man in a boat came by and shouted into the upstairs window, " I have room in my boat come with me" and the man replied no that he had faith the God would save him. Finally when on his roof because of the water rising further a helicopter saw him and dropped a rope ladder and said "climb in before you die" and he answered no that he had faith that "God would save him".
The water continued to rise and he ended up drowning. Once in heaven he asked God, "I had faith you would save me, why didn't you"? God replied, "I sent someone with a car, someone else with a boat, and someone with a helicopter, what more were you looking for?"
