So I'm home from work thanks to the blizzard, and catching up on research for future articles. As always, I find something that piques my interest and impulsively go on tangents.
The 1924 Cleveland Bulldogs were the first team to reach the 50-point plateau twice, with a 59-0 win over the Rochester Jeffersons and a 53-10 win over the Milwaukee Badgers.
One sided blowouts became more scarce as the NFL stabilized as the weaker teams were weeded out. Through this contraction more good players were on the rosters of fewer teams and competition leveled. Between the years 1928 - 1933, 50 points in a game was only achieved twice, and both were by the Giants. A 53-0 win over the Frankford Yellow Jackets in 1930 and a 56-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in 1933.
The significance here is that the Giants did not score 50 points in a game until 1950 - where they did it three times in one season. Not only that, they did it three times in four weeks! They won 51-21 over the Chicago Cardinals on Nov 12, 55-20 at the Baltimore Colts Nov 19 (New York actually trailed 20-0 in the second quarter), after a 7-3 win over Philadelphia Nov 26 they whipped the New York Yanks 51-7 Dec 3 - a remarkable stretch for any team, and especially for one that had been known primarily for its strong defense (this was the year of The Umbrella).
50 points three times in a season has only been accomplished three times in history. Aside from the 1950 Giants:
1950 Los Angeles Rams (the highest scoring team per game in NFL history) with wins of 70-27 over Baltimore, 65-24 over Detroit (which included a record 41-point third quarter), and 51-14 over Green Bay.
1966 Dallas Cowboys with wins of 52-7 over the Giants, 56-7 over Philadelphia and 52-21 over Pittsburgh.
1969 Minnesota Vikings with wins of 52-14 over Baltimore, 51-3 over Cleveland, and 52-14 over Pittsburgh.
2013 Denver Broncos with wins of 52-20 over Philadelphia, 51-48 over Dallas (99 combined points is 4th highest in history),and 51-28 over Tennessee.
I think it was 1961(?)...
That's what triggered the minute you started the 50 point thread..:)
I need Eric to edit my posts for me!

Good recall.
My first 50-point game was the 1986 season finale vs Green Bay (I was home from college and in my seats in Sec.102)

I was an NFL guy all the way..How easily the Chiefs toyed with the Vikes was extremely disconcerting..Actually depressing..:)
You're right, the Vikings were demolishing quality opposition that year, but the won the NFL Championship 27-7 over the Browns. I think the 1969 Vikings are one of the best teams not to win a championship (with the 1934 and 1942 Bears.)
The NFL Film Missing Rings episode on them is great, one of the best they've ever put together.

Yep, Flynn scored that TD running away from my endzone!
They lost on opening day at Yankee Stadium (Alex Webster's first game as head coach) with Gary Cuozzo at QB. Bud Grant made the switch to Joe Kapp and they proceeded to run roughshod through the league winning 12 straight. They rested players the final week and lost to a terrible Falcons team in Atlanta. In the divisional playoff they won a classic over the 11-3 Deacon Jones Rams.
I think you mean Jim Marshall, not Deacon Jones?
I do the same thing sometimes BB56. Last week I had Strahan playing in the 2011 Super Bowl. :-)

Interesting post.
Theory: It takes a very good defense to contribute to a high scoring game. Either by scoring directly, or limiting the opposing offense's possesions. It's so easy to move the ball now, that both teams doing it prevents one team from busting the 50 pt level.

Yards have increased, but scoring has actually decreased. The 1950's was actually the highest scoring period in history, there were more big plays. Since the 1970's what you get is a lot of ball movement between the 20-yard lines.
The Rams were the second team to do it and the Redskins third. That's all.
There were a number of scores in the 60's during the early 1920's when the league was imbalanced. In 1922 the Arkron Pros beat the Oorang Indians 62-0 and the Rock Island Independents beat the Eavansville Crimson Giants 60-0. In 1923 the chicago Cardinals beat the Rochester Jeffersons (who were a strong team at an earlier point in time) 60-0.
As for the Giants
There was Randy Johnson auditioning for the WFL in the Giants 62-10 win over Philadelphia in 1972.
