Great win by the best team in NY tonight.

Tavares looking like he is focused and reaching another level right now. Big game coming up but damn it feels good to dominate the Rangers!!!

Yeah, huh?

As impressive as you guys have looked
DaddyM89 : 1/27/2015 11:03 pm : link
and as dominant as halak looked tonight, do something in the playoffs first. Because no one will remember what happened in the regular season if you don't win your first playoff series in over 2 decades.
Your 100 percent right

Still feels good tonight. 70% Isles fans in the house tonight. Barn rocking. It's been a while since we've been this good.
Let's not get too cocky now

70%? Yeah, ok. Honestly, it looked like it was 50-50.

Don't do ratios, you'll look like Hudson.

Interesting comment by one of the Rangers
blueblood'11 : 1/28/2015 8:06 am : link
The Islanders are hard to deal with because it's like they have no structure. It is a very risky way too play as long as they are playing well and together.

I found that to be a very interesting quote because it's true. When I watch their games no matter who they play you wonder how they don't get caught more in odd man rushes or just plain breakaways.

They are very fast and it's almost amoeba like the way they play. Everyone up the ice on offense and create confusion in the offensive zone, and then when the opposition grabs the puck and go they all retreat to defensive zone.

Of course it doesn't hurt to have a goaltender that the Rangers can't seem to figure out. Truth is they can't seem to figure out how to handle the Islanders. PERIOD!!!!!!!

You must have been watching a different game then I was. They panned the crowd several times and it was no where near 50-50. But it was hard to get a really good read since the Ranger fans were dead quiet all night.

Great win against a quality opponent. Let's hope for no emotional let down against Boston on Thursday.
Good to

Be winning for once. This is the beginning. We have no clue where this ride is going but the fact there is a ride is nice.
Capuano also mentioned we played like crap yesterday and halak bailed us out, especially in 2nd period.

The boys were also aware of them not playing their normal game last night which was not what they wanted. Martin interviewed between 2nd & 3rd period admitted they had been sloppy and weren't playing their game, and that he was sure the coaching staff was going to "give them an earful" in the room between periods.

Henrik had this to say:
Quote:
“The way they move the puck from their defense to the forwards … at times it’s a little risky the way they go for it, but when they’re on, they are really good.”

Which is similar to the Hobbit Zuccarello's comment:
Quote:
“We got some chances but we gave up way too much. Playing against them is hard because it almost seems like they have no structure the way they attack, so we run around and give them too many chances. They have so many skilled players, and for some reason we get into the game they want to play, going back-and-forth, trading chances. We get out of our game. We don’t play smart against them.We need to grind it out against them.

That last sentence is key...the Isles' game is built on grinding it out, and they got away from that last night (the Corsi stats last night were ugggly; we finally saw some of the PDO/puck luck that we have not had this year, so that's a bonus). I think that teams that want to try that style will find that with the depth and relentlessness of the Isles, that tactic plays right into their hands. That's why this team should be a huge challenge for their playoff opponents. It's nice to have the realization that plain and simple, this is a very good team.
As well as JT played last night
Mike from Ohio : 1/28/2015 9:29 am : link
Halak was the key to this win. As much as the Islanders out played the Rangers in the first and Lundquist kept them in it, Halak did the same in the second. It was unusual to see the Islanders backed up in the defensive zone as much as they were, and it felt (to me) like something was about to break for much of the period, but it never did because of some outstanding goaltending.

The Rangers dominated play in that period, and the fact that the Isles lead 2-0 when it ended was a huge testament to Halak's play. I felt horrible he lost the shutout because he deserved it.

Isles look great

From a rangers fan, hat tip to the isles contingency.

Now suck it.

I agree with this, and what's especially (in a weird way) concerning is we blocked so many shots, too... meaning the Rangers had a lot of opportunities. It didn't feel that way because of the way we played in the 1st period and took command, but they probably had as many opportunities to shoot last night as any team has had against us all year.

You're right. They panned the crowd several times and each time, it showed an Islander fan with a Rangers fan. They made it a point to show that. Using the law of averages, that would lead me to believe it was 50/50, though let's face it, the Islanders wouldn't show just Rangers fans at the Coliseum.

So it is your belief that instead of specifically focusing on where an Islander and Ranger fan were sitting next to each other, those were all just random views of the crowd that show what the whole crowd looked like?

Seriously, Clark?

Most of the recap articles I've read
pganut : 1/28/2015 3:09 pm : link
That have bothered to mention it, felt there was a 65/35 split favoring the Isles. I agree most of the MSG coverage was showing the pairs of fans where one half was Islanders, the other Rangers, just to show the fact that there are couples, spouses, coworkers, brothers & friends all divided by the rivalry yet attend the games together, coexist and then sing kumbaya afterwards.

I really hate that these 2 teams may well face each other in the first round. Since two of the top, if not the two top East teams meeting will result in someone eliminated early, that sucks. It'd be great to have these 2 meet for all the marbles coming out of the Eastern. It'd make for something to savor, instead of an appetizer.
I still think they finish 1, 2

meaning we could see an ECF showdown which would be insane!!!

Gotcha

Would like to see that, but cant dismiss Pittsburgh. That's a team that knows how to aggregate points, and they've made some decent trades already to help them for the stretch run.

The Rangers still lose to many games in regulation. I said in preseason i thought we'd finish 3rd in the division this year and face NYI in first round. Sticking to that prediction though its looking like we could get Pitt in first round instead of NYI.

At least there's virtually no fear of missing the playoffs. The 8 teams in the East are basically already known. I cant see Florida's group of 19 year olds making a late run -- more likely to wear down i would think.
isles are legit
Davisian : 1/28/2015 11:18 pm : link
They've got a good team..

What they've done well against the Rangers is force turnovers that the Rangers don't usually make. Then make that turnover end up in the net.
After I write that about Pittsburgh....
MetsAreBack : 1/29/2015 10:04 am : link
they get absolutely manhandled by Washington. Just one game, i get that, but Pittsburgh has been getting absolutely beaten up by all the other relevant Metro teams all year - Washington has outscored them 7-0 in two games, Isles have taken 3 of 4, Rangers took 7 of possible 8 points and virtually never trailed in any of the 4 games.

As an Islander fan, am I crazy for preferring to face Pitt in the 1st round instead of NYR, WSH or BOS? I think Pitt is dangerous and very skilled but doesn't have the depth that the other Eastern contenders do. They are really reliant on the power play to generate a lot of their offense.
