Let's see how the media panics everyone and then the day comes and we get totals much much lower then they were saying. Now they are saying a storm Super Bowl Sunday into Monday that could bring a foot of snow for all of New York. Nothing like getting people out to the stores Super Bowl weekend to spend even more money on bread and milk.
Would you rather everyone get taken by surprise? Perhaps you didn't see the iced up roads a few weeks ago leading to the deaths of 9 people.
Do you have any idea what the size of the NYC subway system is? How long it takes to get everything into shutdown, and everything back up and running again? It's not like someone could go down into the basement and say 'hey, storm's a bust, flip the switch and get everything running again'.
Yeah, there are other more legitimate things to criticize De Blasio about but this isn't one of them. Any mayor would have done the same thing with a forecast like that staring at them. The NWS came out and apologized for missing the forecast

but when they realized that it wasn't going to be a big storm, around 12am. They should have prepped the subways for a 6am start.

Yea dude that's why I said they should have started to restart the system once they figured out the snow wasn't coming... that was around 11-12. And yes this is a big deal ppl lost a lot of money.

Is there anything more idiotic than the idea NYC leadership caused an unnecessary panic? The fucking storm dropped two feet of snow just 30 miles east of the city. We got lucky that it was on a slightly different and advantageous path for us. They did the right things for once and people still won't stop bitching.

Actually DeBlasio is claiming he wasn't consulted on the subway shutdown and it was Cuomo's call..he also said "looking back he didn't know if he would have made that call" hence confirming he's a spineless jellyfish...
I hate DeBlasio as much as the next guy, but this one is on Cuomo, who is rapidly moving up my hate list. Much sleazier than his father, and less competent.

Obviously, that went over your head, since you seem convinced that there was some way they could have done that in 6 hours. You're talking about rebooting a massive transportation system in the middle of the night right after a storm, not calling the backup 7-11 clerk and telling him to come in to work.

Actually it was done in 6 hours... Subways opened at 9am. Travel ban was lifted at 7am... get your facts straight.
The Mayor cannot call for a state of emergency, that is the governor's call.

No, it wasn't done in 6 hours. Shutdown occurred at 11, it was planned well in advance. And personnel had been dismissed in a lot of cases, it wasn't as simple as telling them to turn around and run back into work.
Even the 3 hours which you seem to be discounting is 50% longer than you're suggesting they should have been able to turn around.
