NFT: More snow coming

ODB13 : 1/28/2015 11:46 am
Let's see how the media panics everyone and then the day comes and we get totals much much lower then they were saying. Now they are saying a storm Super Bowl Sunday into Monday that could bring a foot of snow for all of New York. Nothing like getting people out to the stores Super Bowl weekend to spend even more money on bread and milk.
Who the hell cares!

Most of the northeast got a day off anyways.

Would you rather everyone get taken by surprise? Perhaps you didn't see the iced up roads a few weeks ago leading to the deaths of 9 people.
Yup, those weather guys were way wrong.
Phlegm : 1/28/2015 12:00 pm : link
Only a foot in the city. You didn't see the 2 foot totals till you got out to Islip and points east. How dare those guys be off by 25 miles on the storm track.
Yeah, that's the motivation

I'm pretty sure that WeatherMan stocked up on bakery and dairy producer stocks before his last prediction.
Or

he's got no need for Home Depot.

Evacuate the Northeast!!!!!!!!
Its not that

but when they realized that it wasn't going to be a big storm, around 12am. They should have prepped the subways for a 6am start.
I'll believe it when I see it!

Is there anything more idiotic than the idea NYC leadership caused an unnecessary panic? The fucking storm dropped two feet of snow just 30 miles east of the city. We got lucky that it was on a slightly different and advantageous path for us. They did the right things for once and people still won't stop bitching.

Do you have any idea what the size of the NYC subway system is? How long it takes to get everything into shutdown, and everything back up and running again? It's not like someone could go down into the basement and say 'hey, storm's a bust, flip the switch and get everything running again'.

Yeah, there are other more legitimate things to criticize De Blasio about but this isn't one of them. Any mayor would have done the same thing with a forecast like that staring at them. The NWS came out and apologized for missing the forecast

Yea dude that's why I said they should have started to restart the system once they figured out the snow wasn't coming... that was around 11-12. And yes this is a big deal ppl lost a lot of money.
For the record the Mayor has no authority to shut down the

transit system. It is the Governor's call and Cuomo gave DeBlasio a 15 minute heads up before he shut down the system

Actually DeBlasio is claiming he wasn't consulted on the subway shutdown and it was Cuomo's call..he also said "looking back he didn't know if he would have made that call" hence confirming he's a spineless jellyfish...
As sweet as it was to "work from home" yesterday,
Mad Mike : 1/28/2015 12:53 pm : link
having a snow day on Super Bowl monday would be pretty terrific. Bring it mother nature!
Cuomo has flat out said...
manh george : 1/28/2015 12:55 pm : link
that he made the call and implemented it almost immediately, and that he didn't give DeBlasio any notice.

I hate DeBlasio as much as the next guy, but this one is on Cuomo, who is rapidly moving up my hate list. Much sleazier than his father, and less competent.

Obviously, that went over your head, since you seem convinced that there was some way they could have done that in 6 hours. You're talking about rebooting a massive transportation system in the middle of the night right after a storm, not calling the backup 7-11 clerk and telling him to come in to work.
I live in Islip..

Got 25 inches.. 88 cubic yards of snow removed from my driveway.. you could say I am done with winter..

Actually it was done in 6 hours... Subways opened at 9am. Travel ban was lifted at 7am... get your facts straight.

The Governor is in charge of the MTA,
Section331 : 1/28/2015 3:09 pm : link
he can consult the Mayor, but is not obligated to do so. Even the MTA guys said they had no idea they were being shut down until Cuomo announced it publicly. By then. it was too late, and the trains ran all night - empty.

The Mayor cannot call for a state of emergency, that is the governor's call.

No, it wasn't done in 6 hours. Shutdown occurred at 11, it was planned well in advance. And personnel had been dismissed in a lot of cases, it wasn't as simple as telling them to turn around and run back into work.

Even the 3 hours which you seem to be discounting is 50% longer than you're suggesting they should have been able to turn around.
Guys, I think we are losing focus here -
Rob in CT/NYC : 1/28/2015 3:23 pm : link
shouldn't we be discussing the stupidity of the opening post?
In the press conference
BobOnLI : 1/28/2015 3:24 pm : link
it was stated that the logistics were problematic since the trains were all stored in the tunnels rather than the yards. Thus, the train crews had to be shuttled to the trains from where they reported to work. Given that the subway hadn't ever been stopped for snow before, it was amazing that the restart went as smoothly as it did.
Rob in CT/NYC
BobOnLI : 1/28/2015 3:26 pm : link
Indeed, we should never pass up an opportunity to discuss stupidity.
