Worst Giant You've Ever Seen Play

MichiganNYGFan : 1/28/2015 12:56 pm
Who is the worst Giant you've ever seen play? Dumb penalties, getting burned always, just sucking. Now I'm far from any type of football guru, but one player that really stood out to me as the worst I've seen was 2009 CC Brown. I just remembered him constantly getting burned, or a crucial personal foul that cost us dearly. I remember him being ultra bad against the Lions that year. And when the Panthers blew us out in the final game at Giants Stadium. Vikings too. Now I've only been a Giants fan since 2005 when I was 12 so maybe there's a guy in the 90s that blew harder but I'll just open up the discussion with that. Fuck CC Brown.

for a guy, who came from The U when they were considered the greatest college football team, he was about the worst Giants player I've seen (not only the worst receiver).

He was a 7th rd pick.

True...but he was also part of a great Miami team, so you would expect a bit more than he was able to produce.
Barrett Green???
BLUATHRT : 1/28/2015 1:56 pm : link
Maddox was awful. Sean Bennett. Mike Cherry. Terrell Buckley and Kevin Lewis were a complete fucking travesty starting in the playoff game vs Carolina in 05.
CC Brown wins for me
Eric on Li : 1/28/2015 1:57 pm : link
Dave Thomas was the first guy that came to mind, though they had the 2nd best defense in the league with him so it's hard to nitpick too much.

Dave Brown was also awful. He probably contributed to more total losses than CC Brown, but that's more by virtue of position and the number of starts. CC Brown crushed the hopes and dreams of an otherwise talented roster.

Lance Legree was also terrible and hung on for a surprising number of years. Watching him get blown off the LOS on running plays was always depressing.
Gary Wood is another name that comes to mind

He was only a Giant for one game in his 19 year NFL career. In that game (2003 Bungle by the Bay playoff game), he only had one job to do and he screwed it up at the worst possible moment.

Best answer: scroll through the rosters of the New York Football Giants and select just about any offensive player not named Ron Johnson or Doug Kosar. There's your list of contenders right there.

Man, those guys suxt.

Ooops

hands down. was it the game against Pittsburgh that he was a TO machine?

I'd take Brown off the list just for the time he laid out prime time. I'd take Graham off the list for the game he had against Denver when they were undefeated. At least there is one good memory for each of them.

Derek Brown also killed me.

There are guys on here who were good Giants. Some guys were not very good, but do not belong in the same paragraph as "worst ever".
LB
crick n NC : 1/28/2015 2:18 pm : link
Ryan Phillips, taken before Jason Taylor.
Jim Del Gaizio - QB in 1974
PatersonPlank : 1/28/2015 2:18 pm : link
1974 stats; four games (one start), 12 of 32 passes, 0 TDs, 3 Ints.

Jeremy Lincoln and Rocky Thompson are runners up.
Dave Brown never had a chance
Greg from LI : 1/28/2015 2:20 pm : link
Chris Calloway was his supposed #1 receiver. His other receivers included the likes of Thomas Lewis, Lawrence Dawsey, Arthur Marshall and Omar Douglas. His tight ende were Howard Cross and Aaron Pierce. His running backs were Rodney Hampton's expanding waistline, the perpetually bored Ty Wheatley and Keith Elias. His OL included such stalwarts as the original Human False Start Scott Gragg and Greg Bishop.

The guy might never have been much of a QB, but he had absolutely nothing to work with either.

Ryan Phillips was a DE conversion who didn't quite work out. He was a somewhat below average starting LB on a good defense. How this translates to "worst Giant ever" is beyond me.

I hate how Brown gets shit on. He was never going to be a star, but not only did he have absolutely nothing to work with, but he took such an unbelievable beating week after week. Just pounded every game, and he was tough enough to take it. AND he steamrolled Deion! He deserves to be left alone just for that! It's not his fault we blew a 1st rounder for him.
Brian Mitchell, Maddox, Mike Croel.
drkenneth : 1/28/2015 2:25 pm : link
Any number of OL during the 90s.
Plus the guy was a Jersey boy who grew up as a massive Giants fan
Greg from LI : 1/28/2015 2:26 pm : link
He got the NFL job of his dreams, and it turned into a nightmare for him. How much must that have killed him? I can't say I was a big Dave Brown fan, but I always felt more pity for him than anything. He was stuck playing for a jackass coach who belittled him and undermined him in a prehistoric offense that did nothing for him and with a horrid supporting cast. Oh, and he was replacing a Giants legend.

Virtually no QB could have succeeded given those conditions.
Brian Mitchell may not have been the worst
Greg from LI : 1/28/2015 2:27 pm : link
But he was definitely my most hated Giant. It burned my ass just to see him wear the uniform.

Dorsey Levens was pretty fucking bad the year he was here.
I felt the need to distinguish him from the second Human False Start

Luke Petitgout.

What really sucked was watching Gragg then go to the Niners and somehow become a very solid OT for them. Asshole.

didn't Matt Allen average like 32 yards a punt?
Greg from LI : 1/28/2015 2:32 pm : link
Awful. And he was the hidden culprit in the 2002 playoff debacle, since he was supposed to just kneel on the ball and call a TO if it was a botched snap.
honestly, I had completel forgotten Levens ever played for them

It was the headline on the BBI home page after we played the Eagles, and then for whatever reason that page "froze" and was up there for six weeks or something. It became comical considering that Levens was not impressive overall.

Haha. That's good.

I don't remember him being impressive as a Giant.. ever.
It's gotta be Matt Dodge
averagejoe : 1/28/2015 2:54 pm : link
A punter only needs to catch the ball and kick the ball. He didn't catch it very well and he didn't kick it very well. Other players compete against opposing players. Punters compete only with themselves.
Hands down winner, Tommy Maddox.
Red Dog : 1/28/2015 2:55 pm : link
As bad as "Can't Cover" Brown was (and he was really bad), as awful as Ian "the Human Turnstyle" Allen was, as absolutely and totally worthless as Derek Brown turned out to be, none of them were as bad as Maddox.

And I agree that a lot of these posters haven't watched much GIANTS football or have any understanding of what a really bad player really is. Many of the names mentioned, from Rocky Thompson to Dave Brown to Ron Dayne and even to Matt Dodge were nowhere near as bad as Maddox, CC Brown, or some of the bozos on the team in the 1970s were.
Not living up to your expectations does not equal worst player

Chris - I have always said the same about Dave Brown. I don't think, even under the best of circumstances, he was going to be a star. But, he could have been a decent QB if Reeves and Fassell hadn't ruined him. He played with one of the worst OLs ever seen, an unimiaginitive offense that ran Hampton into the ground and then left Brown with far too many 3rd and longs, he had no WRs and no TE that were consistent threats. He simply never had a chance.
