Graziano: Should the NYG do something about Cruz's contract?

Defenderdawg : 1/28/2015 1:19 pm
"Cruz signed his long-term deal prior to the 2013 season. He has four years left on that deal at an average salary of $7.5 million per year and an average cap hit of $9 million per year. This year's salary is a palatable $6.15 million. Next year's is a more exorbitant $7.9 million. None of the remaining salary in his deal is guaranteed..."

"But this is a cold business, this NFL contract business. And with Odell Beckham Jr. having exploded onto the scene as a superstar talent and producer in Cruz's absence, the Giants may well have the leverage they need to seek a reduction in Cruz's salary over the remaining four years of the deal. And it may be in their best salary-cap interest to seek that reduction. They can point out the 12 missed games over the past two years and use Beckham's emergence to help their case and maybe shave a couple of million bucks off of that cap number this year..."

I think it

would be better to see how he rebounds in 2015 before even bringing this up.
I'm missing the leverage

that the Giants have over Cruz here?

And I can imagine that a healthy Cruz along with OBJ to be the best duo in the league if Eli has time.
Just let the guy come back healthy.

This isn't the time to dick around with a young star and good guy. We can always renegotiate down the line if waranted.
Agree with Randy

I have never understood why, the moment a new player shows some promise there are immediate outcries to start cutting or minimizing the role of other players at the same position.

Especially at WR and DB, where you need more than 1 great player at these positions.

Rather than start talking about how to minimize Cruz (in any way), let's hope for a full recovery and the emergence of an incredible WR duo.
Poor precedent, imo

Give him the full 2015 to re-emerge on the field.
No

way. Not this year. Need to see how he recovers and plays. Reexamine the issue for 2016.
Not the Giant way
Coach Mason : 1/28/2015 1:50 pm : link
They will probably give him all of next year to prove he can make it back. If he under performs or doesn't heal up fully they will probably look to modify his 2016-7 salary of 7.9 mill.
He's earned the chance to make a comeback
BeerFridge : 1/28/2015 1:51 pm : link
But if his comeback turns south, they absolutely will not be able to pay him that money.
no and no

Give him a good reason to rehab himself back into a NFL star.

Trying to use a freak injury to lower a guys deal will make other players hesitant about signing with the Giants.

And the Giants don't really have a lot of leverage. They could threaten to cut him (bad precedent to set) but that only saves $2.4M and adds $5.7M in dead money to the books.

He might've been a restructure target if not for the injury in order to lower his cap #, but you can't risk that now until you've seen him on the field. Next offseason is when they'll look to restructure him (or force a paycut). Unless of course, he lights it up like 2011 and becomes a relative bargain.

If his comeback fails, they can cut him next offseason and save $6M against the cap. You gotta give a player of Cruz's ability at least a year though.
I can think of
Old Dirty : 1/28/2015 2:23 pm : link
a number of players whose contracts can be reduced or canceled (as in cut) to save cap space over Victor Cruz. On offense, I see a new deal for Eli (due $17M in 2015) happening that should give us some cap relief. I also see JD Walton ($2.25M) being either extended at a lower number or released outright. On the defensive side of the ball, Kiwanuka ($4.8M) & Jenkins ($2.2M) could both be released. JPP's new deal, if resigned should eat up the money that would have gone to Kiwi & CJ, so that's about a wash. Cutting Beason ($3.6M in 2015, $2.8M in 2016) saves money, but we need him right now. FA or the draft could change that. Prince ($6.9M) could be extended/reworked since he is in the last year of his contract & is coming off another injured season. Reese has some work to do, but leave Cruz's contract alone for now.
Well,

Cruz is holding all the cards this season, with 5.7 M in dead money....next year is a different story....just have to cross our fingers his rehab works out....

Funny we are paying Cruz and Beason approx the same next year, and both are questionable as to what we will get out of them...
No...
Shockwave80 : 1/28/2015 2:50 pm : link
Give it a year or so and revisit.
with OBJ on the other side
Gordo : 1/28/2015 2:54 pm : link
he will stand out, he could be a half of his former self and still be a contributor. OBJ might be his saving grace.

if he was still the only stand out on the team he may be in trouble, but with obj grabbing all of the attention then he can ease back into it. i'm not worried, kid is a hell of a worker and knows whats at stake
Think
TMS : 1/28/2015 5:46 pm : link
this organization gives him a chance to show what he can do for next year at least. If the thinking is otherwise, this is good draft for WRs. and we are in great spot. We will see.
If he had hurt his knee at home doing something stupid, Yeh!
wgenesis123 : 1/28/2015 6:16 pm : link
He got hurt on the job working for the Giants.
