Rumor: Giants working on extension for Manning

Vin_Cuccs : 1/28/2015 7:35 pm
Again, just a rumor, do not shoot the messenger.

From the same source as before. He has been right in the past, and he has also been wrong in the past.

This rumor isn't very interesting or breaking news but....

The team is working on an extension for Manning. Initial numbers have been exchanged. From what I was told, they really liked the way he meshed with McAdoo and the way he rebounded from his poor season. The team feels like they can win with Manning and that his interceptions will stay down and his completion percentage will continue to go up within the new offense. Apparently, after some initial hesitation, Manning is quite happy in the McAdoo offense as well.

No info on length, money or guarantees yet. The team does not want him to go into his contract year without a new deal in place.

If I get any other info over the next few weeks, I will gladly post but there is nothing new upcoming.

Again, this is just a rumor.

I will gladly delete this post if this post is not received well.

Good, needs to happen

Eli is the franchise guy and there are no better alternatives to win now and repeatedly than what we've got. 2x Super Bowl Champion and MVP, in an offense that looks to be helping to improve his game.

No reason for contract drama here.
Why wouldn't it be received well

Look around the league and the teams that have a franchise quarterback how far and away have a better chance for success. Eli Manning is not and has never been the problem.

old man : 1/28/2015 7:50 pm : link
He's a team player, that may get him 1-2 good veteran OL that would better protect him, establish a run game that takes pressure of a passing game(with a good receiving corps), and also get some good D players to get him the ball more often, as his career winds down.
It's just a question of extension structure.
Thanks for sharing.

Cap flexibility this offseason to re-sign our own key players and strategically target outside FA's.

The next biggest domino will be JPP. I strongly beleive he is staying either way, but if he is tagged that will be roughly 14 mill against the gap vs. approximately 3-5 mill on a long term deal that is cap friendly structured year 1.

If Reese works out these 2 favorably, the Giants are looking at quite a bit of cap room flexibility for solidifying the roster this offseason.

Agreed, he was superb games 3 through 16 except for the SF game. No QB is perfect all the time.

Build the OL. Hope Cruz heals. Hope the young develop: Donnell, Robinson, Randle, Washington, etc.

I honestly believe this offense can be top five if healthy AND if we get that key offensive lineman to anchor along with Schwarz in the middle. Our interior OL was horrible but a veteran presence can really help improve our run game and hence our passing game.

That's a ridiculous contract. About $20MM too high, especially given his age - maybe $30MM+ too high. The Giants have paid him very well for 8 games of excellent performance. It's time for him to give some back if he wants that third ring.

Not when they have to write off contracts like Beason's and Kiwanuka's and still reload the roster after a few bad drafts. It's time for Eli to scale it back. Take a page out of Brady's playbook, even if it means we have to deflate the footballs.

Eli ended up with the second best year of his entire career despite needing almost half a season for the team (and himself) to really start grasping the new offense. He also did it with less of a roster than they've had almost every year prior. This system is an improvement over the old one and will likely be even better once they solidify the OL and add a couple more skill players to the passing game.

But I also hope he provides a small discount so we can be a bit more competitive. His salary is one reason our rebuild has been more difficult, particularly replacing the entire starting oline since 2011 SB, and he must know that.
If they can get it done...
Milton : 1/29/2015 3:36 am : link
It gives them the freedom to franchise JPP and still have cap room left over for signing mid-level free agents.

I would set the over-under on a contract at...
--A five year extension, so it would be a six year contract (including 2015 and running through 2020).
--The total value for the six years: $115-120M (so the 5 year extension would be roughly $100M).
--Guaranteed money: $42-45M.
--Compensation over first 3 years: $57-63M.
--2015 Salary Cap figure: roughly $8M.

Anything more than that, Eli got a great deal. Anything less than that, the Giants got a bargain.

Eli is far from perfect and I think if he struggled again this past season MANY of us would have advocated moving on but he bounced back and I'll always be a massive Eli Manning fan regardless of what the future brings. 2 SB's, class act from day one. Borderline HOFer. The league basically has 4 tiers-

-The true great QB's (Peyton, Brees, Rodgers etc)
-The very, very good (Eli, Ben etc)
-Young high picks who may or may not be good
-retreads

Be happy we have a very good "tier 2" QB.

May I amend a little? "Be happy we have a very good "tier 2" WB and a Tier 1 clutch, "championship on the line" QB.

We expect so much from a #1 drafted(SD) QB..But exactly how many SBs do we expect from a #1? I think 2 SB wins is a plentiful return..I would guess with a better D, we would hve had more..And yes, there was Plax

Just to clarify (and I knew "tier 2" would rankle some). I merely meant he's not a first ballot QB like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Not really looking to argue Brees (as is often done on BBI) inflated numbers or not he's gonna get in. I'm more than happy to have Eli Manning for the next 2-3 seasons.

We'll see how he looks physically after that but week after week we see teams come in with absolute turds at QB, rotating QB's, wasting high picks on guys who end up absolutely sucking. If Eli Manning can "merely" be as good as he was this past year we won't have to worry about the position for a while and for that I am thankful. A team sucks at OT or at LB, it's not "that hard" to find someone good enough to be a starter on a championship contender. QB is a totally different story.

extending him is a smart move
fkap : 1/29/2015 12:33 pm : link
because you want him on the team for a few more years. However, before you get all giddy about how much cap room is expanded for 2015 with an extension, remember that it isn't free. He's not giving up the 17 mil he's due to make. he'll turn it into bonus and amortize it, or shift it down the road in salary, but anyway you slice it, whatever we save this year will reduce the cap in future years.

He's going to get paid. At his age, though, I hope it's structured so that if his talent declines, he's not overpaid and difficult to jettison.

It's not a must, but it would help. The Giants can still franchise JPP and work their way through free agency, but it would mean restructuring some others that they may not want to restructure (i.e., Cruz, coming off a serious injury). An extension for Prince is also an option for creating cap room.

It's just that a mutually beneficial extension for Eli is the optimum solution--if they can agree on the money.

If they give Eli an extension and JPP a long term deal, yeah, that would create plenty of room under the 2015 salary cap, but it would also create big cap hits in 2016 and 2017, so they would have to be careful about any other free agents signed in 2015 (all of whom would be cheap against the cap in the first year, but not so much so in years 2016 and 2017).

Restructuring doesn't commit you to giving more money to someone who is already under contract, whereas an extension does. And in Eli's case, it will mean the largest contract with the most guaranteed money in the history of the franchise. The Giants would be foolish to negotiate it as if they have a gun to their head. Unless it's a contract that makes sense for both sides, the Giants won't do it. And the same applies to Eli. This will be his last crack at this kind of guaranteed money and he will not sign on the dotted line if Condon thinks he can get a better deal by waiting and piling up better stats in his second year in the system for both him and OBJ.

Mara claims we won't be as active this FA as last. While the quantity of FA signed may not be as high we may have the room one or two bigger fish (along with resigning JPP). Franklin/Iupati/Boling and/or Randall Cobb come to mind.
