I believe he's an UFA....haven't seen much written about him here. I think he would be a great addition....nice player and 6'3 335lbs. Him and Hankins would be a nice wall and I think one of the better and bigger starting DT units in the league. He gave the Giants fits a couple years ago in New York. It goes against their philosophy a little, to spend alot of money on a DT...which is why they let Linval Joseph go, but I'm not sure Knighton's cost will be that high. Thoughts?
Not sure that's true, they did sign Rocky Bernard to significant dollars, Fred Robbins too.

Canty got the big contract because he could play inside and outside, otherwise they typically don't spend on UFA DTs.

Not to mention Jenkins and Patterson.
As Pat Traina wrote today (check DefenderDawg's thread), the Giants should use free agency for a DT upgrade. Suh and Paea may be too expensive, but there will be other, less expensive options.
Rocky and Robbins weren't paid at that level. To further my point, they were viewed as pass rushing DTs who could play reps at DE in some looks.
If Knighton is potentially looking at $7-8M per? Fuggedaboddit, you're thinking with your hearts.

Donny Brasco would agree
Then go DE and Oline first two rounds... get a little corn on the Cobb from GB.. bing bang boom we're in business
If not, what do you think about a guy like Brandon Graham form the Eagles? Could he (or another UFA out there) be a cheaper and acceptable alternative?

I'm still on the sign Suh and let JPP walk(unless Abrams can work his magic for BOTH) bandwagon..The idea of the strongest middle in the NFL which, domino-wise, will cause all kinds of havoc, imo, is very exciting to contemplate..Whether it's doable or has a chance to get done is moot, but it's my fervent wish..
Bromley still has to show he can be the run stuffer they need him to be. I think he can. Physically gifted, hard worker, seems to know what he needs to work on. But, as of this writing, don't think he's there yet.
bc, I don't think they re-sign JPP unless there's a significant compromise. ~$12M per ballpark. If he departs, it leaves TWO holes at DE, both of which are much more urgent than DT.
Graham is basically the opposite of the NYG DE paradigm : short, stocky, not great at POA, he's a tweener. I know he had some big BBI fans in the draft, but I was told there was no interest and drafting JPP confirmed what I suspected at the time.
I think Spags could manage to work in Suh very well..It's still football and your best players get things done..LT would have been brilliant in 4-3 as well..Top notch talent is always utilized..There's no downside to having a still young best in the game DT at your disposal..
Money is another issue, but I can assure you that Spags would find a way to utilize one of the best D players in the game
The problem is it leaves a big hole at DE, and replacing Kiwanuka makes two.
Yeah, I think he's more of a necessity than before the Phillips hire.
That's if they want Suh in the first place
Jerry's going to do what Jerry does: one or two good FAs, along with a whole slew of cheap vets and hope somebody outperforms expectations. So get ready for the next wave of the likes of Ross, Jerry, Brown, Walton, etc. That and the draft.
If there's any good news, it's that, assuming we can resign Thurmond, we are good at CB.
As somebody said, outside of QB and CB, you can make a case for almost any other position in the first round. Our talent pool is that poor, and that thin.
Dawg, exactly. Don't get me wrong, this defense has one good DT to build around. But, that's a position where they simply choose to not spend big dollars.
Exactly.
