his contract requires him to be accessible to the media. all all other players in the league, comply he doesn't.
he's failing to comply with the spirit , perhaps not the letter, of his contractual obligation.
Conan has nothing to do with it. all that means is that he participates in what he wants to and fails to comply with contractual requirements, because he does not want to. if you think that's commendable, that's up to you. but his appearance on Conan does not eliminate the fact that he is violating the spirit of his contractual obligations.

But even you said that he most likely isn't violating the letter of the obligation, and isn't that the standard for him to meet regarding something he seems to dislike? Not sure why he has to go beyond that when he obviously doesn't want to. You can't hold someone accountable for not going above the standard when that individual has met the standard.

what's it like being a dumbass who makes a wild-assed speculative guess regarding someone's personality based on one opinion on a relatively unimportant subject?
Didn't make one comment regarding holding him accountable. He may have dodged the issue of accountability by meeting the letter, and not the letter of the law.
It's not all that important to me, really. But, to my mind, this issue comes down to one set of rules for all the players. He knows what they want. Come in and answer a few questions, some of which will be stupid, just like every other player who has come before or will come after him. He's no better, no worse than anyone else.
People in other occupations have to put up with way worse. than things than answering a few stupid questions in front of the media.

I stand behind my assessment, largely because you have an awful lot to say about a "relatively unimportant subject".
Lynch's unwillingness to do a press conference has literally no impact on your life whatsoever, yet here you are.

He did show up... the contract says basically make yourself available to the media for a certain amount of time or you get fined. So he shows up and basically answers however he wants or gets and pays his fine. That is how the contract is laid out and he fulfills it or there would probably be a lawsuit for breach of contract. I didn't see a lawsuit so looks like it is fulfilled.

Francesa called Lynch a jerk and asked "What if other players did the same thing? There would be chaos."
I disagree with him. I think the result would be fewer reporters asking fewer stupid questions at media day.
Why doesn't the media hold any responsibility to make media day something actually worth participating in? Why is it on the players to "suck it up and answer questions for an hour even if some are stupid?"
The media day is about promoting the game and attracting more and more fans to watch the game.
Not a single player did a better job at the media day of promoting the game than Marshawn Lynch. His answers are the only answers to any question asked that people even remotely care about. His performances to the media all week have gone viral and left an imprint on the internet.
Now if everyone did what he did, I'd get where the problem comes in. But that's not the case. Marshawn did his job better than anyone this past week.
Awesome video too. Marshawn and Gronk are from two different worlds. Marshawn is a straight up goon and Gronk is the ultimate fratboy. But both guys are just overgrown children who just so happen to be two of the most physically intimidating guys in the sport. One of the best late night segments in a while. Those finishers look sick btw.
Disagree about the first part of your post. But, yeah - why not have their bargaining unit have more input into the structure of the interviews. Although, they might wonder why they should when only one of their members seems to have a major problem complying with the requirement.

RE: well I guess its ok that Lynch doesn't do his job and talk to reporter
Nobody really gives a crap about what they say. Politicians have a responsibility as public servants to blather about substantive topics. Who gives a flip what Lynch or anyone else thinks? Athletes should do all their talking on their respective playing fields... Leave the stupid opinions to the Hollywood crowd.
that the players owe something to the media. I don't watch the games so i can read quotes in the paper the next day.
The media is free to write whatever they want (to a point) about players, speculate on their "worth", posit that they're past their prime, or intimate that their character should be called into question. This goes on in every article, every post game show, and in social media constantly.
Now we have a player who doesn't seem to want to play the media reindeer games and people are upset about it?
What difference does it make to you?
Lynch is giving this game more publicity than it would have ever had had he answered the inane questions with canned answers.
The guy is a baller - an incredible runner - and based on some of the stuff i've seen, he has a great sense of humor. I'm a fan.
Funny thing is... I was listening to an interview from a former o-lineman the other day (it may've been Mark Schlereth) and he said that his o-line mates had a pact where none of them were allowed to speak to the media during the regular season (or something to that effect... I don't like Schlereth very much so I usually tune him out) but when they went to the Super Bowl that they HAD to speak. So they told each other that they had to say as little as possible or else get 'fined' by their own kangaroo court. I guess if Lynch was an o-lineman this wouldn't be as big a deal as it's being made out to be by some?
Again, I don't see much of a difference between Belichick and Cam Newton stating the same phrase over and over again in a post-game news conference and what Lynch is doing except that they don't do it all the time like Lynch does. So it's ok if you only do it every once in a while (like Belichick has) but it's not ok if you to it all the time? What about if you do it more often that not? I mean... where's the line where it's acceptable and it's not?

C'mon Ronnie, I know you are better than that. If the contract says he has to make himself available to answer questions from the media, the very strong implication is that you address the questions in a manner relevant to the question. Does that REALLY have to be spelled out in the contract?

And it seems to me that he could respond to a particularly dumb comment the way TC does, by pointing out the absurdity of the question and going on to appropriately answer questions that are not absurd. I cannot understand why people go though so much spin effort to absolve this guy of shirking his responsibilities. Its fine with me if he does that, but don't pretend that he hasn't done it or is somehow justified.
If the media members don't like it, that's their problem. His obligation per the CBA was to show up and be present for a predetermined amount of time, and that's what he did. If the NFL doesn't like what he has to say, they should provide him with a script for what they want said.
There are two bigger questions here that are, in my mind, more important than Marshawn Lynch and whether or not you're ok with his behavior:
1. Why do the fans even want to hear what Lynch has to say in response to what are sure to be a mundane series of questions? And more importantly...
2. Are fans even interested in this sort of media-player relationship anymore?
I think the answer to #2 is probably no, with the 'no' becoming stronger as new fans age into landscape. I hope we evolve into a place where there is no more media day. I don't think it's even needed now.
I know right? Complete arrogant prick.
Both are very funny guys.
You are the worst.
Haha. Shut the fuck up.
Are you posting on bbi from work?
Hypocrite.
Conan just pulled 11 minutes of great content out of him, and he didn't need a CBA to do it.

Difficult to pull stuff out of people when you ask the same unoriginal questions to all of them.

Undoubtedly, but if they were any more proud of me their hearts might explode. I can't do that to them.
