If I'm not mistaken
River Mike : 1/30/2015 4:04 pm : link
I seem to remember that ownership chided TC about his attitude in the media Q&As. TC moderated his behavior but will still point out an absurd question, he just no longer approaches it as if all will be absurd and its a waste of his time. Bottom line is there are always obligations and responsibilities that go with any job. The employer decides what those responsibilities are. Some people will shirk those responsibilities or make a sham of them. I don't think much of those people.

It's MTV's fault for coming up with Real World
Cam in MO : 1/30/2015 4:17 pm : link
and sparking the "reality tv" explosion.

Since the 80's, the "story" and "drama" surrounding sports has increased exponentially. There was a time when reporters didn't print certain things about athletes- and only wrote about the game and their thoughts on it.

That's long gone.

We've become such a voyeuristic society that we now get angry at people that would rather keep to themselves- sometimes we get mad at them under the guise of "he's not doing his job".

Blech.

I guess it really isn't MTV- it's us.

Snoogins.

Exactly.

Unless you're breaking stories like Eugene Robinson banging hookers the night before the game or Barrett Robbins disappearing the night before the super bowl you're just shoveling shit.

his contract requires him to be accessible to the media. all all other players in the league, comply he doesn't.

he's failing to comply with the spirit , perhaps not the letter, of his contractual obligation.

Conan has nothing to do with it. all that means is that he participates in what he wants to and fails to comply with contractual requirements, because he does not want to. if you think that's commendable, that's up to you. but his appearance on Conan does not eliminate the fact that he is violating the spirit of his contractual obligations.

But even you said that he most likely isn't violating the letter of the obligation, and isn't that the standard for him to meet regarding something he seems to dislike? Not sure why he has to go beyond that when he obviously doesn't want to. You can't hold someone accountable for not going above the standard when that individual has met the standard.

C'mon Ronnie, I know you are better than that. If the contract says he has to make himself available to answer questions from the media, the very strong implication is that you address the questions in a manner relevant to the question. Does that REALLY have to be spelled out in the contract?

What the hell does that even mean? I think these required theatrics is bullshit. If he doesn't want to talk, then he shouldn't. Who really gives a shit? For you guys to label him as anything derogatory for his desire not to talk to the media is just pathetic. Get over yourselves.
And really...
RC02XX : 1/30/2015 4:34 pm : link
Is there anything more grating than for someone who doesn't know another person from a damn hole in the wall telling that person "I know you're better than that" to somehow disregard their opinion? Talk about arrogance in telling me what I should know or not because out opinions may differ.
I wonder how many media outlets would have the guts...
rsjem1979 : 1/30/2015 4:37 pm : link
...to stop covering the NFL. Let's see how much the league's popularity wanes without a gaggle of sportswriters sticking recorders in the players' faces all week.

Wait a minute, that'll never happen, because these media outlets depend on ad revenue to survive, and if they ignored the NFL, their readership/viewership would evaporate and they'd be done.

That's the absurd part of the implication that the media is somehow responsible for the NFL's popularity. It's a mutually beneficial relationship to be sure, but in the age of social media, the actual reporters play a minimal role in bringing fans closer to players. Often, they're a barrier because players are becoming ever more distrustful of people who depend on controversy to drive ratings or page views. Why is Marshawn Lynch the biggest story of the week? Because the media NEEDS him to be.

Moreover, with few exceptions, players and coaches have been conditioned to give cliche answers - and the media doesn't seem to have learned how to ask questions that could possibly be answered in any insightful way. Honestly, if you really just want Marshawn Lynch to show up and say, "it's really great to be in the Super Bowl and I hope we win" when some dope asks him how it feels to be there, that's YOUR problem. Sure, you could be a real hard ass about his contractual obligations, but the fact remains, placating the media with generic responses is no more valuable than essentially ignoring them entirely.

Quick, tell me one thing anyone on either team or coaching staff has said this week that will change the way you watch the game on Sunday.

You didn't hear how the Seahawks are going to cover Gronk. You didn't hear how the Patriots are going to defend Lynch. You didn't hear anything at all other than two teams that respect the hell out of each other and hope to have a good week of practice and win a game on Sunday. That's a fucking waste of time.
Seriously... That was funny.

Bingo. And as proof, I offer the complaints from the media whenever the game goes someplace like Detroit or Jacksonville. It's never about the game itself, it's about the vacation. Most of them don't even go to the game, every host on Radio Row is flying home tomorrow. After they go to one of the big Friday night parties so they can eat and drink for free again.
so we're pathetic and need to get over ourselves

No it's pathetic that people are calling him derogatory names because of this irrelevant story. But continue to show your indignation at what is pretty much a nonstory.

And year, I'm pretty great...matter of fact I'm pretty fucking awesome. Thanks for noticing.

You are calling guys derogatory names for calling a guy derogatory names for his actions re: a relatively unimportant story. And, you seem to be pretty involved in discussing this unimportant story.

And, for the record, I just weighed in on whether he should have conducted himself differently. This interview incident is a minute piece of who he actually is. Who that person is, no one on this site probably has a clue. And, I really do not care.

And, re: indignation - I expressed an opinion about the actions of an athlete re: a specific incident. Thought was part of the deal re: this site.
Personally...

I don't care who talks or doesn't talk unless they plan on going into TV after their playing career. Then they're hypocritical douchebags like Sterling Sharpe and Mark Shlereth...
I watch a lot of Conan

He is hilarious but mostly for his unpretentious mockery of late night talk show hosts. And Andy Richter is a great sidekick.
