But it is quite astonishing to me he's going to let the TV show spoil what he's created. And he is. The TV people are on record more than once as saying they want 7 seasons, and they know the end and he walked them through the end for every character. So unless he gets the books out in back to back years they will spoil his ultimate end. And that does astonish me that he has allowed that to occur. He had a 7 year headstart on them from the time HBO greenlit the pilot in 2008 to where we are now.
see the end of the series on HBO, we won't be able to read it. Sad that GRRM's legacy will likely be that he didn't finish what he started, rather than how many people enjoyed what he wrote.
its his story, i'll let him do what he wants to it. So many HBO rumors that I just ignore them all together. For all we know he's writing both and he'll release them both within a year of each other.
Long time reader, started reading the books in 2000
...and with the massive delays post Storm of Swords, coupled with the latest HBO season having plot changes and book spoilers, and I have really stopped caring.
The product is just not good enough anymore to give a shit.
This guy man... he is killing me. The show is now different from the series. With no SH story line on the show you need book 6 to see what is really going to help with somethings.
Also books 1-3 were great especially the last 25% of 3. That was the peek of the books if you ask me. 4 stepped way down mainly because the way he wrote books 4 and 5. He basically wrote 4 with characters you didn't even know with stories you didn't really care about. Then went back in time in book 5 and hit on the characters and stories you wanted to hear that he completely skipped over in book 5. Book 4 because you were waiting to hear about the people you know and liked sagged drastically. Book 5 I thought was really good again although not near book 3. Wouldn't be shocked if book 6 and 7 are being written at the same time. Still though I will be pissed if the show passes the books.

But I alread saw the show! That book have lots of pictures of tits??
Seriously, there is a lot of stuff in the books that didn't make it to the show. I would read at least the first 3. They're all terrific.
It is sad but I do not get too worked up about it anymore since in my opinion the 4th and 5th installments were sub par anyway.
I also agree with the poster who said he seemed relieved he does not have to actually finish the books. I get the same impression.
Maybe the best fantasy novels I have ever read. Storm of Swords in particular is unreal, fantastic book.
Not even bothering to get worked up, the show is excellent, will continue to enjoy it.
