Ok I've made mistakes, in Nj (where i plan on moving back too soon)
In Nj I have 4 Disorderly persons offenses for marijuana possession from ages 18-21 as well as a 3rd degree felony marijuana distribution charge.. I'm 28 now and have stayed out of trouble here in Tahoe , but I need to return to NJ and I need a job.
I've been looking vigorously, and I only honestly need a job that pays $15-$20 an hour, my gf is a physicians assistant and makes enough to pay the bills but I just need my own money.
I'm making bank here in Tahoe but need to leave soon, I do have a nest egg of money saved tho.
I've applied to over 7 jobs this month and haven't heard a peep back. Most jobs were for merchandising or installing electrical components.
What's the best way to get a half decent job with a felony record ?
It's tough out there man and I just wanna make an honest living like any other Joe.
Thanks, and I'm ready to take some abuse from many here to get hopefully 3-4 good answeres from people here "in the know"
So basically you have an associates degree in nothing. And I say that as a guy with a bachelors in political science.
Just giving you a hard time at the expense of myself...:) Good luck, man.
Companies aren't allowed to look into your criminal record without your consent. My point being, thus far, it's not your past that's keeping you from a good job. These companies that you aren't hearing back from have no idea that you've had a couple run-ins with the law (unless you're volunteering this info in your resume, which is just suicide).
I would try and get in touch with a recruiter who specializing in placing people like yourself in the right positions. But before you get there (or perhaps when you get there) it appears your resume, cover letter, etc. needs to be revamped entirely. That's what's keeping you from hearing back now... not the felonies.
I would really like to work for Pepsi as a merchandiser or Labcorp as a driver
I can't believe people take the time to
1) Sign up for the site
2) Think of convoluted scenario
3) Type out convoluted scenario
4) read comments and respond
there are agencies which help ex-offenders find work. The discon - pot stuff is what some employers consider a case of the "young and dumbitis".
problem with a criminal record is when an employer is swamped with applications and looking for a way to thin the pile of applications to manageable levels - ex-felons are an easy toss. Not being judgmental - that's just the way it is.
re: the discons - don't need to share publicly, but discons may be drunk and not knowing when to shut up. on the other hand, if it involved fighting (violence) - employers are leery of violent indicators.
2 year degree in anything is not sufficient to gain access into employment. even 4 year degrees are no guarantee. the only 4 year degrees that are fairly marketable are things like engineering, IT related.
If you can swing it, might want to try and get additional education, training (certificate). Medical field is generally hiring, but, with the weed felony - might keep you out of certain positions.
First thing I'd look into, is seeing if and what part of your record you can get purged, expunged. and, even if that happens - you need to diversify and fatten up that resume.
While I don't disagree that nyk is a disaster on many level, he was always a harmless poster from what I can recall.
Not everyone makes 6 figures and has a house in Long Island or northern Bergen county
My dad works for Fios and he can't even get me hired there because of my 3rd degree marijuana charge
It's NykAllDay1
That being said, you would have to be in a protected class for this to apply to you, but my sense is that companies are moving away from prophylactic refusal to hire policies and are considering the type of offense and the nature of the position in regard to criminal convictions.
I do not know if New Jersey has passed a "ban the box" statute yet but I do know they have/are considering one. If memory serves me I think that Christie either vetoed it or has threatened to do so.
I do not think that your prospects are as bleak as they were just a few years ago. Look for positions that do not put you in contact with the public and you stand a better shot at finding something.
Keep us posted. If things don't pan out I mighht be able to help.
If you get busted on the lie, you can pull the "that was a felony?" card.
You're in a catch-22, because being honest will get you eliminated, and lying could get you eliminated. and lying is wrong in general, so obviously take this advice as sarcasm.
maybe do a google search for places that hire without a background check. Get creative.
PJ, that' might work for some of the lower end jobs I'm targeting.
My advice - ramp up the outreach - it's just a stamp or an email. You may be making a mountain out of a mole hill.
And what the fuck - are you trying to get arrested?
If that doesn't work, there's always wall street.
As your attorney, I suggest that you start drinking heavily!
Hmmm...but wouldn't that be like hiring a really fat person at a cupcake shop? You're eventually going to experience your products going missing.
Christie cancelled the tunnel project. They couldn't design a tunnel large enough for him to fit through.
I actually just started working there part-time for extra money and can't complain.
