Thomas vs. Chancellor vs. Sherman

Osix_ : 1/30/2015 12:54 pm
How would you rank these 3 DBs in Seattle from best to worst?

They're all bigtime players but they do it in different ways.

The Seahawks secondary is one game away from going down as the greatest secondary of all-time. And these 3 guys are the reason why.

Thomas
Sherman
Chancellor

That feels like the most logical order but Chancellor is probably the biggest x-factor in the entire game. He's just a playmaker. I have him 3rd but I could easily argue him as #1. Really tough trio to choose from imo.
It's close, but when going against matchups

I think Chancellor is the most important guy on the field. He gives them the best chance against containing Gronk. I wonder how much Earl Thomas will be limited with his injury, and it'll be interesting to see how NE will try to exploit him.

I'd go Chancellor, Thomas, and Sherman, but they are all awesome players.

if we're talking about their value

to Seattle in general (i.e. over the course of a season), I'd go Sherman, Thomas, Chancellor. A true shut-down CB is worth the money they command.

If we're talking about their value in this upcoming game, probably the reverse, but that's largely due to Gronk being NE's primary weapon and the average (at best) WRs they have which minimizes Sherman's importance. Granted his ability to matchup with Lafell or Edelman 1v1 allows the rest of the D more freedom to focus on Gronk.
Based on pure talent and skills, I would have to go:
RC02XX : 1/30/2015 1:07 pm : link
Thomas
Sherman
Chancellor

However, if we're talking specifically about the Super Bowl, I would actually go:

Thomas
Chancellor
Sherman

Thomas's ability to take away the deep ball makes Chancellor and Sherman that much better in their own roles.
I would rank them

I really enjoy watching Chancellor,
Go Terps : 1/30/2015 1:50 pm : link
but my guess is that someone who knows defensive football would tell you that Thomas's exceptional ability to cover ground in the secondary allows the Seahawks a lot of freedom to do things elsewhere on their defense.

My guess is Thomas stirs the drink.
I think Earl Thomas is the best DB in the business

I agree with you, but had a question (knowing you "kinda" don't like Hokies; I have no skin in the game, not a VT alum or fan). IMO, Chancellor is the rare VT player that's seemed to flourish of late in the NFL versus the many failures. How do you feel about his play? I'd go out on a limb and say I sure wouldn't mind him on the Giants.

When Philly traded up in the draft, and there was lots of talk of them grabbing Thomas. End up getting Brandon Graham instead.

I was heartbroken when Seattle took Thomas one pick before us. He was my favorite player in that draft and I really thought we were going to take him.

He's awesome.

Chancellor is a straight up science lab experiment gone right. The dude is a freak.

Probably not popular but I would rank them:

Thomas
Chancellor
Sherman

And that doesn't mean I don't think Sherman is an excellent corner. He is. He's a cream of the crop CB. That's just how I'd "rank" them if I had to. I don't think I'd totally disagree with any combination.
shame for Thomas

Especially if it's in dominant fashion like last year, I don't see who else gets the nod. Going through Peyton and Brady in back-to-back Super Bowls in this era is as good as it gets.

Hah....I advocated drafting Kyle Fuller last year, and even Logan Thomas if he was willing to convert to playing TE.

Hosley pissed me off in an intense way because not only did he have exceedingly poor judgment in selecting a college team, I didn't think he'd be a quality NFL player. Score one for me!

Disagree. ONE OF the best ever, maybe, but the '60s Lions had three Hall of Famers in their secondary - Night Train Lane, Dick LeBeau and Yale Lary. The '80s Niners with Ronnie Lott, Carlton Williamson, Eric Wright and Dwight Hicks are right there, alotoo.

Thank god that when Sanders, Green and Bailey were all Redskins, Sanders and Green were already past their primes and Bailey hadn't hit his yet. It was short lived anyway.. but those 3 in the same secondary all in their primes would have been insane.
I don't think it's a slam dunk Greg
Osix_ : 1/30/2015 3:51 pm : link
I'm not really familiar with the all-time great secondaries in football. For some reason it's not as celebrated as the best Linebacker groups or best DLines.

But back to back years as the hands down #1 secondary in the sport including two Super Bowl wins over Peyton and Brady in THIS era? It's incredible what they're doing.
I'd rank them
chuckydee9 : 1/30/2015 4:47 pm : link
Sherman = Thomas

Chancellor. ..

Chancellor is a good to have but if you can't control the deep middle and X receiver then hitting hard Isn't as useful. .
They're excellent
Greg from LI : 1/30/2015 4:50 pm : link
But they have a ways to go to match Lane-LeBeau-Lary. Those guys combined for 182 picks, 19 Pro Bowls, and 6 first team All Pro selections.

He's amazing. After a healthy Darelle Revis, I think Thomas is the best DB in football. Definitely the best Safety at this point IMO by a large margin.

. And the next 9ers' secondary was great too with McKyer, Wright, Lott and Fuller. The most important single element is often the FS.

And he talks about the LOB and the difficulties in his job. You see Sherman make a play, well, there's a reason.

The other DB gets backup from Earl Thomas, who runs away from Sherman's side. Earl gets backup from Kam, and Sherman is begging you to throw the ball his way. He's the only defender on the field without a backup.

If one of the safeties is pulled away from sort of pushing the play to one of the DBs, the backfield is more vulnerable.

In this case Sherman is the most important, Thomas is responsible for a couple of players and so is Kam. This weekend it's Sherman, Chancellor and then Thomas.
