NFT: Civil War Book Recs (wrapping up Bruce Catton)

Rick5 : 1/31/2015 12:14 pm
After a few years off, my CW book reading addiction is getting back into full swing. I'm just about finished with Catton's Centennial History of the Civil War trilogy. I'm thinking of going with McPherson's What They Fought For 1861-1865 next, but I am open to any other recommendations. I'm open to any topic, but I have a slight preference for something that emphasizes first person accounts for my next book (the reviews of McPherson's book look good and Battle Cry of Freedom is still one of my favorites ever).

Canton's trilogy on the Army of the Potomac.

Anything by Stephen Sears (especially his book on Gettysburg).

Shelby Foote's monster trilogy on the war.

I like Gordon Rhea's work too.
are you also looking for Civil War fiction?

if so, I recommend the books of Howard Bahr, and the famous Killer Angels by Michael Shaara.

How about:
Ulysses Grant Personal Memoires
Co Aytch by Sam Watkins

I was astounded by how well Grant's memoire was written. Co Aitch was written by a former confederate soldier and I found it a great read.

Grant's Memoirs was a good one and was written by him because he was destitute after his presidency and needed the money for his family. Fascinating, considering he was the President of the U.S.

Also I found anything by Jeff Shaara, son of Michael, was also very good. All his work is very factual, but he does mix in some fiction at times.

Ralph Peters is also a very good Civil WR novelist.
Thanks, guys.

Some of the books that were listed I have already read. I have not read anything by Stephen Sears (will check those out). I have not read Grant's memoirs, but I was planning to do that at some point(maybe next!). I will definitely read more Catton at some point. I have read Killer Angels but not any other CW fiction (the thought never really crossed my mind outside of KA, so thanks!). I've got one to recommend: April 1865 by Jay Winik was a great book. It's been about 5 years since I read it, but it is well worth reading.

Sears recommendation. Just read his Gettysburg about 6 months ago. On a par with Landscape Turned Red (Antietam) which is one of my favorites. Also Coddington's Gettysburg Campaign is a classic.

Haven't read What They Fought For but I did read For Cause and Comrades which is believe is based on the same research. Very worthwhile.

is also a big fan of Sears, as is one of my co-workers.

I really recommend his book on Gettysburg.

This Republic of Suffering by Faust. An excellent book about how the enormous carnage of the Civil War changed Americans fundamental thinking really about life and death.

Another great novel I can recommend is an alternative history novel, the Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln by Stephen Carter.the premise is that Lincoln survived the assassination attempt with political machinations surprisingly like present-day.
Cool.

I also recently enjoyed Winston Groom's book on Shiloh. It's. A good balance between readability and tactical minutae of the battle. I actually learned a lot. I would also recommend Bruce Levine's The Fall of the house of Dixie.
Thanks,

Southern Storm: Sherman's March to the Sea

by Noah Andre Trudeau. Its the first detailed account I've read of how Sherman conducted his assault on Georgia on his way to Savanna. I'm finding it a very fascinating read.
