As some of you may know my old man is in the middle of a year of chemotherapy. I'd like to buy him a tablet to help kill time while he's "in the chair." Can't afford to break the bank so high end of my budget is $300, ideally I can find one for less than $200.
He'll use it to watch videos and e-mail his old U.S.M.C. buddies. I'm looking for something & gt;8." I can get a refurb kindle Fire 8.9" for like $160 with a one year warranty.
Any thoughts BBI?

Android has an app that you can get on the internet called Popcorn Time. Has basically any movie/show you can think of for free. That's where the HDMI port is good. You can watch movies still in theaters and most before they hit Did.
You can likely get the Nexus 7 from 2012 for a good price. Solid tablet, and can do all the things an old man would want.
All three were under $200 and all three are great.
The Kindle family is great for using Amazon media, their books and video and what not. When paired with Amazon Prime, it's great.
The Kindle is a great Amazon media tool. If that isn't what you're looking for, other options might be better. I'm happy with mine because I use it mostly with Amazon prime.
