"I don't think I can go this week, I'm pretty banged up"...Sean Payton comes in.."Amani these guys are one of the worst secondaries i've seen" Amani "I can play, I feel better!"
Anyways, the Giants never really did give Collins an awesome offensive line. No one on any of those lines was an all pro like Snee, but the sum was greater than its parts. They signed alot of hold the fort guys that offseason like Ziegler, Glenn Parker and Lomas Brown to contend.
They all got hurt the next year too if i remember correctly.
perhaps his "account" has been drinking or it has somehow become fixated about some events from long long long ago... during the heyday of Jim Fassel -- when guys like Belichik & Carroll were starting all over????
that Collins had to play the second half with a separated shoulder after fat Tony flopped on him during a sack. Anyone who has had a separated shoulder will tell you how painful that must have been. The holding call on Hammer had a huge impact and was very ticky-tacky.
I'm surprise so many people didn't get this - maybe b/c no one wants to remember! What a game. What a feeling. I'll never forget seeing Carter and Moss on the sidelines with that WTF just happened look. Payback for 97. Strahan was a beast.
Omus vs. Onus. Painted mud. Great memories which then turned into shit 2 weeks later. lol.
He wasn't called for holding on the return. Defensive holding on the DL was a call they had been making a lot that season and Hammer was a frequent victim. It is called when the DL grabs an OL, TE, or back to prevent them from getting to the next level to block.
I don't recall Hammer getting called frequently during the season. I thought the Ravens had asked the refs to watch for the infraction before the game.
(If refs don't rob Giants in SF, Collins would have had a great shot at the SB title. There was only one team in his path (Severely overrated TB team).
yeah, I think people sell the 2002 team's chances short
Not that the team was that great, but it was the perfect year for someone to sneak in and steal a title. There weren't any dominant teams that year. Ah well.
The shots of the Minnesota bench, looking completely defeated even though it was still the first half.....those were awesome. It was even better because the Vikings were supposed to beat the Giants easily.
before shitting himself against Baltimore. Why wouldn't he do the same against a Tampa pass defense that generated more sacks, more turnovers, and allowed fewer passing yards and TDs than the 2000 Ravens?
I don't know why Baltimore gets wide recognition as an all time defense but Tampa doesn't...I guess Derrick Brooks needed to do a childish dance like Ray Lewis.
Tampa would have killed that Giant team. Derrick Brooks would have had ten pick sixes.
The BAL team physically beat the shit out of teams. TB did not.
TB also had the benefit of playing 5 backup QBs including several who never started one NFL game. In these 5 games they held these backups to about 4ppg. In the other 11 games they were still very good but only around 18ppg.
Vs TB, Shockey would have been the key. He was a top 5 offensive weapon and the perfect guy to use vs TB. That NYG team would have had a very good shot vs TB.
stringing together 3 good games against quality teams was slim to none. They virtually never did this ever under Fassel's watch. Their hottest stretch was in late 2000 and late 2002. 2000 saw them feast on Philly and Minny in the playoffs, two good but flawed teams and NY was home. 2002 they did beat the Colts on the road which was impressive and they beat a sleepwalking Philly team with the backup QB in.
The Fassel Giants rarely beat quality teams. We all hated hearing that same line parroted over and over but it was true.
The 2002 Giants weren't beating Tampa and then some other good team AND THEN another good team in the super bowl. They weren't capable...and they didn't even beat the highly flawed Niners...lest we forget.
One of the myths shrouding that Fassel led team was that they couldn't win the easy games or that they let down against the lesser quality teams of the NFL. This couldn't be further from the truth. Outside of a few moments, they did in fact beat the dregs of the NFL but that's really all they ever did.
but Tampa was pretty damn good. Beating them would have been a tremendous feat for that team. And Oakland wouldn't have been easy. They were very similar to NYG but better offensively.

Bob - Frequently might not be the best word, because I don't think anyone was called frequently. But, he was called about a handful of times, which seemed like a lot more than any other DL in the league.
Hammer's technique of tugging the offensive player forward was, as I recall, the source of those calls including the SB. I am relying on memory here which, especially as I age, is suspect. I can't comment on whether Hammer "held" any more than any other DL. I thought the call in the SB was ticky-tacky.
-BBI during SB XLII
John Madden

No, just Anak.
looking back, Eli did have to wait for the line to develop.
I think you are right. Eric have you been hacked again?
Other than Pat and John continually talking about the "omus", that was the best line from the game.
Which spawned this handle.

SB had OAK. One of the worst SB teams of the past 15 years.
