Until the whistle blows then it can be unmuted to announce the play. That should be league wide standard to address not only this issue but all the other annoying crap that is played incessantly during the game
You can't deny that crowd noise is primarily to interfere with the visiting team rather than to support the home team. Come on! The scoreboard says "Let's make some noise!" when the visiting team has the ball.
And yes, I leave the game hoarse from screaming, but I know what cheating is and this is much worse than under-inflated footballs.
So, the ability to hold on to the football in inclement weather doesn't affect the game? I slightly deflated football is much, much easier to grip and hold onto.
They say their fans have a tradition of screaming at the top of their lungs when the opposition has the ball and the shape of the upper deck bounces the sound back down to the field. It could be true. Attendees at last year's SB who had been in MetLife stadium before claim they never heard it so loud.
The "tradition" of fans screaming at top of their lungs or a stadium designed to maximize noise? I'd like to know if/how that stadium is fine-tuned to enhance crowd noise. Could be a real scandal as opposed to a hysterical reaction to deflated footballs.
you're used to artificial noise. I used to listen to Dodger away games broadcast on the radio. The announcer was not at the game but in a studio somewhere in NY. There would be a fake teletype machine in the background and the "crowd" would roar with every play ... at different decibels according to "good" plays or "bad" plays for the Dodgers. Fun times.
The National Football League cleared the Colts on Monday of complaints made by the Patriots — and first reported by Yahoo Sports — that the Colts had pumped artificial crowd noise into the RCA Dome during Sunday’s game.

Completely misses the point.
How would you know? Seems to me that changing the football to make it easier to throw in the cold air would certainly impact the game.

Now that would be freaking fantastic.
