What do you think of Tevin Coleman in the second round?

robbieballs2003 : 2/3/2015 10:16 am
Every time I watch him he is just shot out of a cannon. He has great hands and can pass block too. I like Jennings and Andre Williams but this kid could be amazing in this offense and a legit starter soon enough. He would be a perfect complement to Andre Williams but I feel more that Williams would be a complement to Coleman.

though, it's a really nice draft for RB's.
I like him a lot
Lionhart28 : 2/3/2015 10:52 am : link
very talented kid, and definitely a late 1/rd 2 talent, but with the depth in this draft, I think we might be able to get a better value in round 3. I also don't know much about his chops as a receiver.
Would be a great pick
Sy'56 : 2/3/2015 11:12 am : link
Here is my short summary of him from my report.

"Junior entry. Finished as the number two overall rusher in 2014 with 2,036 yards, finishing behind only Heisman hopeful Melvin Gordon. Only the 18th player in history to breach the 2,000 yard mark and he did so with very little help around him. His record setting 2014 season includes a 300+ yard game against Rutgers. Coleman has ideal size and speed for the position. At his best in a north/south type running scheme where he can use his downhill speed and power. Some of the finer, more detailed aspects to the position need to be worked on. His routes out of the backfield, pass blocking technique, and ball security are raw around the edges. However when it comes to talent and big play ability, Coleman has the potential to be a star at the next level."
Disregard those

that come on and say "NYG has bigger needs".

NYG needs more playmakers on offense. And no offense to Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams...but neither of those guys should factor in the decision making process.
Very

good player, and we need a speed back. But if we take him in round two, Reese is going to have to find some very good players on day three. That hasn't been his forte.

My thoughts exactly, we need playmakers and a 3rd RB that can catch and take it to the house from anywhere on the field would be perfect for this offense. And then in 2016 he would then take a larger role replacing RJ

Exactly. And i'll take it a step further and say that the Giants do in fact have a big need at RB. This team needs a stud at RB even if Williams and Jennings reach their full potential.
look at what Beckham did for this offense
djm : 2/3/2015 12:24 pm : link
he's a skill player yet the OL seemed to progress as Beckham progressed.

Imagine what a freak RB would do for Eli....i'm telling you we'd win 10 games by accident if we can upgrade the RB position.
I'm all for offensive playmakers
JerseyCityJoe : 2/3/2015 1:08 pm : link
However, if we can't stop anyone we can lose 10 games and it will be no accident.
I'm
NYBEN1963 : 2/3/2015 1:13 pm : link
pretty sure we get more than 1 draft pick
The Giants already had a freak RB
Gmen703 : 2/3/2015 1:31 pm : link
in Wilson. Yet, when they put him behind a putrid o-line, he got injured 5 yds behind the line of scrimmage. If the DTs/DEs are intercepting hand-offs, it wouldn't matter if we drafted the 2nd coming of Gale Sayers. Fix the OL!

If that can be done, then I believe A.Williams will surprise folks running behind a competent (not even a smash-mouth) offensive line. Hell, look at how D.Ward was all-madden when he was a Giant. To me, RB is far down the list of needs.
The Giants value a Tiki Barber 'do-it-all' back
Coach Mason : 2/3/2015 1:38 pm : link
if they envision game-breaker potential. They were willing to spend a late #1 on David Wilson with no other RB chosen before round 4 by Reese.

With Wilson, I believe they saw an eventual home-run hitter in both the passing game and running game (would have loved to see how he would have done in the McAdoo offense).

If they see that type of potential for Coleman, pick 40 may not be out of the question. Though there will be a ton of red-chip talent sitting there. Let's see what we shore up in FA first, which may give us a clearer picture.
Like him alot

premium rounds and playmakers, although this might be a good spot to consider the DE from Stanford.
I still
NYBEN1963 : 2/3/2015 2:06 pm : link
believe Duke Johnson can be the 2nd pick for us.To me he is the "do it all" back that we need to COMPLIMENT the guys already here. I think both of the top 2 guys currently on the roster will be big contributors but we still need that true receiving RB that can take it to the house from anywhere.
Duke is a favorite around here
JonC : 2/3/2015 2:28 pm : link
and he could well be in play for NYG imo, but TC does tend to prefer larger running backs.
am I wrong with the word complement?
robbieballs2003 : 2/3/2015 2:37 pm : link
I don't think I am. To compliment someone means to give them praise. To complement a RB means to do well what the other back doesn't.
I'll have to watch more on him
Andy in Halifax : 2/3/2015 2:39 pm : link
cause he didn't really impress me in the Ohio State game. One loooong TD but he didn't have to make anyone miss. Otherwise bupkiss.

Can't say the blocking in front of him gave him much of a chance though.

I do, especially those who come on as experts and are proven wrong time and again
Right now, outside of Beckham
KWALL2 : 2/3/2015 2:44 pm : link
the Giants team speed on offense is WELL BELOW average. Using a couple of early picks on some offensive speed and playmakers makes a lot of sense.

They really need to address a couple of big holes in FA (Safety and OL) and then we could looks to add explosive speed at WR, TE or RB.

I'd like the Giants to go with a RB in round 2 or 3 and Coleman and Abdullah from Nebraska would work.

Coleman runs tall. Some compare him to Murray but he's more McFadden than Murray. Some concern about how he will hold up in the NFL with that style but he has HR speed. He runs hard and cuts and explodes. He can also catch the football and makes plays in the pass game too.

Sign me up for WR Parker/White in round 1. Coleman in round 2. Doing this would give the Giants 3 speed matchups on offense instead of just one.
I do not want him.
TC : 2/3/2015 2:44 pm : link
I believe the risk that he will struggle at NFL level is too great. He has decent size, and excellent long speed, but I see to many other attributes and instincts that I don't like to see. He is not fast or sudden over the first 10 yards, beyond that, he can fly. Compare this to Abdullah or Ajayi.

He doesn't have particularly good vision, nor is he elusive, qualities I think of as comprising running skills. Compare his to Yeldon or Abdullah.

While he exhibits power on occasion, he does not routinely finish runs by or punish tacklers. Compare this to Gurley or Yeldon.

When he gets to the NFL and has to play against defenders who on average are bigger, faster and more physical, I think these deficiencies will become evident, and he is likely to struggle.
Not sure ...
Beer Man : 2/3/2015 2:50 pm : link
I was looking at his highlights the other day. The first things I noticed (beyond his speed and explosiveness) is that he runs straight-up (which can get ya killed in the NFL) and that all of his highlights are between the tackles. I would like to see a scat-back who busts the corners. Tevin Coleman may be that style of runner, but the highlight video didn't focus on it, and I haven't seen him play.

Watch Yeldon work to the perimeter. While he often has good blocking, when he doesn't, he can still pick up yardage. He is one of the most polished runners I've seen at the college level.

jayg5 : 2/3/2015 3:07 pm : link
is a "run between the tackles" type offense. You draft players that will fit into your style of play, not the opposite.

Yeldon is a polished rb but the injuries are alarming. Seems to banged up quite often

Coleman has a significantly different body type than McFadden. I don't see the comparison at all.

I would agree with you if this was still Killdrive's O. But the team had really hoped to exploit David Wilson's talents in McAdoo's new O. Once Wilson was gone, that option disappeared and they had no choice but to run between tackles. I think Ben's O can be scary with a back that can bust the corners and make people miss in the open field.
a speedback with hands who can block
Osix_ : 2/3/2015 3:23 pm : link
is one of this teams biggest needs. I would prefer to target a RB who fits that description in rds 3 or 4. But Coleman is a really good player. Depending on how we treat Free Agency and the 1st round, I'd be cool Coleman in rd 2.

David Wilson was such a huge loss. Like KWALL mentioned above, this team desperately needs to add speed to the offense and especially the backfield.
I'd like the Giants to take a look at . . . .
TC : 2/3/2015 3:28 pm : link
Yeldon's teammate Jalston Fowler too as UDFA or maybe even a round 7 pick. He's a FB, and a pretty good blocker, but can also carry. And when he does he's surprisingly quick. An interesting contrast to Hillis.

Haven't seen him catch, if he can, he could be an interesting role playing prospect. Might just click in this "O."

There's a video of him at Draft Breakdown, but for some reason this site doesn't like the URL.
Second favorite RB in the draft
Amtoft : 2/3/2015 3:46 pm : link
I would take him in the 2nd and I would steal him in the 3rd. Good draft to need a RB though.

You need to take another look.

They are the same size/build and similar running style. High cut, runs tall, and a one cut long strider with some concern about lateral agility and ability to stay healthy with that running style.

It's an obvious comparison that many have made including some college coaches this fall.
It would be nice if we could trot out a Sproles or a Mewelde Moore,
Big Blue '56 : 2/3/2015 3:54 pm : link
type back for a change..Perhaps there are players like these in rounds 6-7 or UDFA?

I think Coleman is 2+ inches shorter and has a much thicker lower body. Pad level can be comparible, but Coleman has shown several times on tape the ability to approach the line low and powerful. I never saw that with McFadden in college.

Josh Robinson from Mississippi State is a guy I would look for late. Also not sure where Mike Davis from South Carolina will go...but he isn't talked about enough. I think he has the talent to hang with the second tier of backs in this draft class.
Thanks Dave,

I'll research them some more
Coleman and McFadden
KWALL2 : 2/3/2015 8:21 pm : link
You'll see Coleman measure the same as McFadden. 6'1" and 210-215. The comparisons are more about running style. Running tall with long track speed. A lot of long TD runs from a similar college offense.

I like Coleman a lot. He'll be a player in the NFL but I do like Gordon much more.

Parker and White really aren't that fast though are they. They both seem like 4.5 guys.

we have too many needs to have so many resources invested at WR IMO.
