Just stop it already it's embarrassing. I have given you the benefit out the doubt in the past even if you sometimes posted something cringe worthy and defended you in many threads in the past but this last go around is just too much. The fact that you defend your "NY Jew" remark instead of apologize is a real shame. You can't possibly believe you and your "buddy" were anything close to being fruitful in that other thread and please take this in the spirit intended but to be perfectly blunt it came across as nothing more than prideful arrogance as the motive for inviting him and what took place. Please just apologize and take a break for awhile.
Well said, Steve, and as clear a differentiator between someone like you who has the courage of conviction and a poseur like Spock.
I think one of the most important aspect of anything in life, including religion, is having humility in your thoughts and beliefs. More specifically, I having Epistemic Humility is key in relating to those around you with different ideas and views. I think this is where steve is different from the likes of spock and enoch2021. He practices the characteristics of humility while others seemingly do not. And for that, bravo to steve.
Here's a link of an interesting view of Epistemic Humility from a philosopher and theologian, Max Andrews:
Quote:
There are three primary categories for virtue the Christian/theist will affirm. The first are the transcendental virtues: truth, beauty, and goodness. The second set is the theological virtues: faith, hope, and love/charity. Then there are the four cardinal virtues: prudence, courage, patience, and justice. It’s my belief that every Christian must practice epistemic humility. What is that? Well, epistemic humility, in the sense I’ll be using it, refers to an application of the four cardinal virtues in the area of epistemology (knowledge). Each of these virtues have a respective vice. For instance, the virtue of moderation would appear as a vice in addiction.
The virtue of epistemic prudence is know when and how to appropriate your knowledge to others. Have you ever noticed that person in class or in church that seems to be the ‘know-it-all,’ whether they actually are or not? Of course, it’s worse when they’re simply ignorant of what they’re talking about, but not only is this person annoying but there may be several issues rooted in the flaunting of knowledge. There’s nothing wrong with sharing you’re knowledge but, like I said, it’s how and when you share it. This isn’t always the case but there may be underlying reasons for why someone doesn’t practice epistemic prudence. Perhaps, the person really is ignorant and feels like he needs to compensate. This person will usually drag out the same point over and over and sometimes doesn’t really present a coherent verbiage of what he’s trying to say. Secondly, it may be the case that the person does know what he’s talking about but presents it in a boastful manner. This person may appear very proud. To avoid such a vice the Christian should be prudent. If you don’t know what you’re talking about or if you’re ignorant of something that’s okay! Being teachable is very important and knowing your capabilities is good. The epistemically prudent person will present and share his knowledge in an understandable way and will share it on the level of the intended audience/listener.
Epistemic courage is willing and desiring to learn new material. I know it’s a very daunting task to try to learn something, especially for the first time. In my current research I’ve discovered that I need to go back and re-learn some of my science and teach myself new sciences and mathematics. My current task is learning and becoming proficient in theological German, which is a condition for my current degree. I admit, there are times when I really just don’t want to learn this stuff. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times–it’s natural. Someone who doesn’t feel overwhelmed at times isn’t doing enough. The task and virtue here is to be willing and having that longing desire to learn more. Learning never stops and knowledge is so important to every aspect of life and God. What’s the chief end of man? According to the Westminster confession it is to know God and glorify him. There’sso much that is loaded into that role of knowing God. Discover it. The corresponding vice would be the unwillingness and lack of desire to learn. It’s being stubborn and rejecting knowledge–being content with ignorance.
The virtue of epistemic patience dovetails epistemic courage. The epistemically patient person will understand that learning is a process. Sometimes this process is painful. Not all knowledge is an academic knowledge. Knowledge isn’t merely book knowledge or memorizing facts or reasoning skills. Knowledge is also religious/moral and experiential. The Christian discovers moral truth; it’s not invented. This comes in time and can be painful. Like the experiential knowledge of being in a marriage or having a surgery, moral knowledge can be painful (I’m not saying marriage is painful… don’t read into that!). Sometimes we have to feel the pain of loss or personal sufferings to really know love or to value something or someone. In the words of the professor in Good Will Hunting, Sean, played by Robin Williams, “True loss only comes when you love something more than you love yourself.”
Finally, epistemic justice is giving credit where credit is due. The respective vice would be intellectual piracy. This epistemically just or fair person will be able to recognize truth in other people’s work. You don’t always have to be right. Be willing to be corrected and note the truth shared by others. Don’t be envious of others’ work and knowledge as well and don’t falsely accuse someone of stealing your ideas. Share knowledge and allow for others to share as well.
As I said above, the Christian practices these virtues in their epistemology. The general virtue is being humble and the general vice would to incorrigible. There may be many reasons why someone has the vice of being incorrigible (or incorrectable), which may be stubbornness, pride, or a lack of desire to learn. The Christian should learn to love to learn and want to learn. After all, we will spend an eternity learning more about God. Why not practice these virtues now and use the gift of mind to honor him?
that Spock and his buddy reminded me about, and that their buddies at The Discovery Institute have made plainly clear, is the extent to which supposedly pious individuals who spend much of their time worshiping a specific form of God, are willing to lie, misrepresent and dissemble in order to supposedly bring others into the fold.
That is the feature of the creationist/ID movement leaders that always struck me the hardest. Their obvious willingness to tell lies for God. Gives me a creepy feeling.
just seeing this all now, so I don't know, but also like Jay Cutler don't really care. He's proven he whines and rats in the past so I don't see why that'd change.
the purpose of which is in large part to troll another religion, i.e., Messianic Jews?
All Jews are Messianic (except for the atheist Jews, but then as per Jewish scholarship, the Messiah is supposed to be human, and therefore, NOT God ... or *a* God...and we're off to the Jewish argument tournament...)
As I was saying, ALL Jews are Messianic, insofar as we're supposed to believe that the Messiah (or *a* Messiah) is coming and to pray for the arrival of that Messiah, seeing as the Hebrew for "Messiah" ("Moshiach") means "king." David Ben Gurion mused that he might be the arriving Messiah when he founded the State of Israel, and Benjamin Netanyahu now seems to entertain similar illusions of grandeur, only without the musing.
Anyway, how fucked up is it to found a religion largely designed to troll Jews? I mean, once you believe that Jesus was the Messiah, HELLO! You're officially Christian. To say you're not and that you're still a Jew is a LIE, seeing as how all Jews outside of Spock's cult point to belief in Jesus as the Messiah as the BRIGHT LINE between "Jewish" and "NOT-Jewish."
And I cannot believe Spock's utterly LAME defense of his casually tossed-off line as to how a bunch of "NY Jews" are attacking him ... a usage unmistakably derogatory in context, not only because the term was used to dismissively characterize all the posters contending with him, most of whom were not Jewish, but because of the implicit connotation that because NY *Jews* were attacking him, what they were saying could not possibly be valid or of any merit BECAUSE THEY WERE JEWS.
"NY Jews" = a well-known stereotype, the Woody Allen (child molester) neurotics, who are, of course, as per any Christian fanatic, damned, and therefore must receive the opposite of any respectful consideration. No, they are the ones upon whom to set the dogs, specifically bulldog(s) in this instance.
"a New York lawyer" during the Iran Contra Hearings? I remember there was a huge kerfuffle at the time, following Liman's immediately identifying *that* phrase, not even including the "j-word" as antisemitic.
Aaron Sorkin referred to "NY Lawyer" as slur decades later on "The West Wing."
For the life of me, I can't find a reference to that incident online, without spending It did occur, of course, pre-internet.
Thanks my friend, and believe me I have plenty of flaws myself as we all do. It is just real embarrassing to me as a Christian when other people come here and draw attention to themselves because of their faith and try and push their faith on people I just don't agree with that and being offensive in the process is just not biblical. I am certainly proud of my faith and if it comes up in the normal conversation in a thread I will usually make a post or two if asked a question or to clarify something like a bible verse etc. that I perceive as being misunderstood or being taken out of context but I don't believe I should be pushing my beliefs on anyone else. I am a pretty devout conservative Christian but I don't believe that a in your face "bulldog" approach is how we are instructed to go through life and felt I had to take acceptation to what took place.
Steve, as a Christian myself, I agree with you. It's actually a little harder to post about subjects than it is too discuss face to face.
Is New York lawyer anti-Semitic? I could see that being used with other prejudices in mind (more regional), but will take your word for it - shyster seems worse to me (courtesy of your guy, Joe)...the NY Jews as Spock used it is unmistakable...
Rob in CT/NYC -- This is why I want to find the colloquy Â
from the Iran Contra hearings and associated Op-Eds that followed. In context, "NY Lawyer," was derogatory and conveyed the connotation/stereotype of Sleazy/Trixy Jew.
RE: Robin Williams would have been funnier if he used suspenders instead Â
Duh. Don't you get it? shepardsam has carte blanche to post whatever lame stuff he wants and he can get away with it and not get banned for the same offensive equivalent stuff other people post. Include FiMC in that pile of dog shit too. EXPOSED.
After reflecting upon the many words here, I have "good news" for you- I will honor your requests to depart and never come back. It is obvious to me many of you believe I am anti-Semitic, a disgrace to my profession, and a hater of good science. (On top of that, I even had the audacity to root for the hated Dallas Cowboys this offseason.)
This decision became even clearer when I read the words from a dear brother in Christ, Steve in ky. I have great respect for Steve, so you guys could thank him for making it clear to me, and for you guys getting the result you obviously want.
Although I know in my heart this is the furthest thing from the truth, obviously my words, both past and present, indicate otherwise to some. I see no reason to defend my words, so I will just let it be at that.
I know some will be looking for me to start a new handle, but it is definitely not my intention to take on a 4th name.
So, I guess this is good bye. To those who really believe I am this monster many believe I am, "you are welcome" (said after you say, "thank you for leaving ") To those who are either indifferent or know me better, thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt and for the fellowship we have shared these many years.
To God be the glory! Live long and prosper!
Spock out
Lol yeah he is kinda right. he's got ya there. I am quite the fucking douchebag. not #1 Chris in Philly status but you think Mook can make history and knock off the 2X champion?
are you kickerpa? because I just mentioned you (kind of) in the Rangers thread. You labeled me racist once and I never mentioned anything about race. Then again, I've taken enough white guilt classes to know better from skewl because "college is so worth it"
It was not my intentions to run you off this site, I only wished you would offer an apology for what was a clearly insensitive remark that hurt and offended many people and then just take a break for awhile and just not be in the BBI routine. I once took a break from BBI for a period of something like a year one time and I barely if ever read the site during that time as well as not posting. We have both been here a long time probably getting close to twenty years now and sometimes a nice long break can be beneficial, I know it was for me. I hope that you might reconsider making any absolute claims and maybe leave the door open to the possibility to where you might return again at some point in the future after a healthy break and a renewed outlook.
I do appreciate your passion and love for the Lord and have also enjoyed talking with you about so many subjects throughout the years regardless of handle (haha). And for the record I never viewed your changing handles as trying to troll. You never have hidden the fact and if I'm not mistaken all but this one, possibly another was pre-login days when every time we signed in we had to type in a name to assign with that individual post. You went through most of those during that time in what I interpreted just an expression of your mood for the time. People were posting all kinds of things pre-login switching up a name on a whim as you typed in your posts was far from anything outrageous in comparison.
Take care my friend.
