2015 NFL COMBINE DAY 1 THREAD ST, OL, TE

sjnyfan : 2/20/2015 6:45 am
First day of on-field timing, drills and workouts are not only finally here, but we'll start seeing separation for players that are under what many people consider our #1 need, an offensive lineman.

The frontrunners at tackle are of course Stanford's Andrus Peat, Iowa's Brandon Scherff and LSU's La'el Collins. After 37 reps on the bench yesterday, my favorite OT, Miami's Ereck Flowers could solidify a spot in the top 10 with a strong workout on field today. Keep an eye on the workouts of Jake Fisher and DJ Humphries. With good ones I think they could start seeing 1st rd buzz. A few other tackles who I think will improve their stock today are Donovan Smith and Rob Havenstein. Versatile sleepers are Sean Hickey, Andrew Donnal and Mitch Morse. Cedric Ogbuehi of course will not be working out.

The top interior lineman are AJ Cann and Laken Tomlinson. Cann could go in Rd 1. Cameron Erving, who started the season as one of the nation's top OT's goes into the combine as arguably the top C. Small school star Ali Marpet had a big week at the Senior Bowl and can continue his ascent with a strong combine. I think he'll run a sub-5 40. A couple of sleepers are Jon Feliciano, Andrew Gallik and Max Garcia. A huge omission here is McNeese State's Antoine Everett. He was invited but there will be more about him throughout the process.

At TE the top two are Maxx Williams and Clive Walford but the #3 spot is wide open. NJ's own Nick Boyle could grab that spot. Penn St.'s Jesse James could too. The draft advisory board suggested the underclassman go back to Happy Valley but he has freakish athleticism for someone 6'7". He could blow up the combine. The only TE that I know of who won't be working out is Rory 'Busta' Anderson.

Lastly, ST doesn't get much attention but a player who I hope gets mentioned is the lone long snapper, Navy's Joe Cardona. Not only for planning to serve our country but because he's a damn good long snapper. People will chide the position but ST coaches are well aware of him and when he's ready/able, he'll be in the league. He's been clocked at snapping the ball faster than anyone else (41 mph), does it for punts and FGs, and is perfect every time.

I won't be able to post all 40 times today like previous years so if someone wants to take the task, thanks. I will on Saturday and Sunday. There's also the Google Docs link. Coverage begins on NFL Network at 9.

I don't know gentlemen, but..
drkenneth : 2/20/2015 6:04 pm : link
WR seems to be BPA at #9...At least right now.
Agree on Peat.
Crispino : 2/20/2015 6:15 pm : link
Underwhelming at best.
I've been on the Scherff bandwagon for awhile now, but I'm pretty surprised at the number of reps he did on the bench press. Strength was supposed to be his greatest asset. Of course, the number of bench press reps doesn't tell you haow he uses his size and leverage to move tacklers, but it raises eyebrows. I thought he looked good in the drills he did today before he got hurt. For a big guy, he moves very easily and naturally. Very fluid.
Jake Fisher ran an insanely good 20 yd ss and 3 cone
sjnyfan : 2/20/2015 6:26 pm : link
His ss was 7.33 and 3 cone was 4.25. Both are better than any lineman from last year I believe. There will be WRs and RBs that won't have numbers that good and Fisher weighed in at 306 lbs. To give you a couple of examples, Kelvin Benjamin wasn't that good in either drill. I don't think Andre Williams did either.
WF seems to think Collins helped himself the most among OL

If it makes you feel better Scherrf cleans over 430 pounds. So I don't make too much of the 23 reps for him. The guy is strong!
We have to see the DL
Rjanyg : 2/20/2015 6:44 pm : link
And LB do their stuff before we can project the 9th pick. I'm looking forward to Fowler and DuPree. If they show good short area quickness they will be in the conversation.
Oleary is a solid kid
Rjanyg : 2/20/2015 6:58 pm : link
Nice hands, runs good routes and is thick. If he is available in the 4th round he would be a nice addition.

No they are not, but that doesn't mean they won't take a WR at #9. The problem with the Lions was they had no QB but kept taking WRs in the top of the draft. A WR without a QB to get him the ball is useless. Giants are the exact opposite. They have a successful franchise QB and therefore are never wrong adding more weapons to the offense. WR is a realistic possibility at #9. Especially if White goes first and Cooper is still there at #9.

Jon, we agree again. This is exactly how it's all shaping up. I think the Giants will end up sitting at #9 and seeing which player should be a top 5 pick but happens to still be there.

If you assume two QBs are going prior to the Giants pick, there is a good possibility one of the top two WRs or an edge rusher you like is there at #9. If I'm Reese my board of likely available at #9 is.

1. DE Shane Ray (if you think he can play 4-3 DE)
2. WR Amari Cooper
3. DE Bud Dupree (unless he bombs this weekend)
4. OT Ereck Flowers
5. OG Brandon Scherff
Marpet has made a name
Simms11 : 2/20/2015 7:40 pm : link
for himself with outstanding showings in the Senior Bowl and combine. When will he get drafted and by whom? Had he moved up to the 3rd round?
Emil
JonC : 2/20/2015 7:46 pm : link
Ray and Cooper will probably be gone.

Still really early, but I'm still keeping an eye on Peat and will hear something on him at some point. If what Colin's been hearing is accurate, he might not be to their liking to begin with. Let's see how Dupree and Fowler test and if any other DEs look like NYG options. If they're truly planning for the worst at WR, White or Parker figure to get long looks. The QBs will help push one target down to us.

Just don't know about the OL at this point, but I'd still wager they look long at Scherff and Flowers, but playmaker normally trumps OL.
Dante Fowler
Rjanyg : 2/20/2015 7:59 pm : link
Is he considered 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE? I believe he has played both LB and DE at Florida. He is about the same size as Osi and looks like he has long arms. He just seems like a play maker.
Just
AcidTest : 2/20/2015 8:01 pm : link
like every year, a lot of players will be drafted higher than they should be based on what they did at the combine and at post season games like the Senior Bowl or East West Shrine game.

Marpet may be one of those players. Because he looked good at the combine, and at one of the post season bowl games, he's now a day two pick? He's a DIII player. Somebody on another thread said they would take Marpet over Ogbuehi, a DI player who has faced the best competition at the college level, and who many still think will develop into an excellent tackle in the NFL. Crazy.
I don't get the love for Dupree
robbieballs2003 : 2/20/2015 8:03 pm : link
He gets tossed around. No way the Giants value that at 9. He also plays standing up not with his hand on the ground meaning he tries to just turn the corner on OTs and TEs. We would be asking him to get his hands on the OTs and TEs. He is way too much of a project as a 4-3 DE.

I would take Fowler. Then White. But both will probably be gone.
Robbie, I agree on Dupree
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 8:10 pm : link
I don't like putting him in mix at all just because he's a de that has height/weight giants prefer. Imo, he has no business being considered at 9.
I haven't seen enough of the DEs yet
JonC : 2/20/2015 8:13 pm : link
Dupree gets the most 4-3 DE love to this point, and Fowler has a number of smart football posters here in his corner.
Jonc
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 8:22 pm : link
To this point, Bud Dupree might have the best size to be 4-3 de but imo shouldn't be considered one of top pass rushers or a top 10 pick. Odd to think to this point there just isn't a clear cut left tackle or 4-3 de in this draft. Positions of need for nyg.
should have said a clear cut left tackle
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 8:26 pm : link
And 4-3 de in this draft that would warrant pick #9
Jayg
Big Rick in FL : 2/20/2015 9:16 pm : link
Dante Fowler warrants the #9 pick. A lot of people think so. Daniel Jeremiah who works for nfl.com and was a scout for the Ravens, Browns and Eagles has him at #2 overall in his most recent mock.

Dont think he makes it to 9
.
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 9:26 pm : link
Big rick, I agree, Fowler absolutely warrants a top ten pick and agree with blue that he won't be there at 9. My point is that Fowler might not be viewed as a traditional 4-3 de.

In terms of how nyg have specific height/weight numbers they want their de's to be I dont see a fit at 9. I'm basically saying Dupree shouldn't be considered at 9. That's my opinion.
Im thinking more and more

that the value is going to be at WR at 9...

jayg5 : 2/20/2015 9:36 pm : link
I agree, and many will disagree but I have no problem putting Gordon on the short list to. Hoping to see him run a 4.4 forty tomorrow and do really well in other drills.
I think it would be dumb
Big Rick in FL : 2/20/2015 9:40 pm : link
Not to consider him he a 4-3 DE because of his size. He played at UF at 278 pounds. They asked him to drop weight which he did. I don't want him strictly as a 4-3 DE though. I want him in a Von Miller type role. He can rush the passer from LB, Both end spots and DT. He's my favorite player in the draft. I am really hoping he is there.

I'm thinking more and more that the Giants' 2015 draft could end up looking a lot like their 2014 draft, with a tweak here and there, like a FS or LB in the 3rd instead of a DT.
big rick
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 9:45 pm : link
He's a stud, no doubt about it. However, I don't see him getting past atlanta who picks 8th. I can see him going top 5
DuPree is a solid prospect
Rjanyg : 2/20/2015 9:47 pm : link
If he does well in the 3 cone and the 40 he will improve his stock. I believe he had 25 sacks in his career at UK. I think Fowler is considered a DE then an OLB. He has excellent length and can separate from offensive tackles.

Either guy will probably be high on the Giants draft board.
Jayg
Big Rick in FL : 2/20/2015 9:52 pm : link
Unfortunately I think he goes top 5 also. That's not a bad thing though.

Fowler, Leonard Williams, Mariota & Winston go before us. That leave us with 1 of Cooper, White, Shelton, Gregory, Ray. I also think Gregory and Ray go before us. If we can get either Cooper, White or Shelton I'd be ecstatic.
big rick
jayg5 : 2/20/2015 10:00 pm : link
Gregory,Ray, and Beasley just don't fit into nyg role of 4-3 de imo especially after their weigh ins today. They are great fits for 3-4 teams though. Wr like White would be a great pick and as much as I like Shelton I just don't see them doing pulling the trigger on him.
Buck Brooks on Peat
drkenneth : 2/20/2015 10:08 pm : link
Seems like BBI was down on Peat today.
Peat - ( New Window )
Oh I agree completely
Big Rick in FL : 2/20/2015 10:09 pm : link
On those guys. I think they both go before us. Was just saying that would be what is left on the board.
This was one of the worst TE's in years
blueblood : 2/20/2015 10:21 pm : link
some of them were just awful in the drills.. definitely a sub par class
I wanted Ebron last year and learned my lesson (to some degree)
Eric on Li : 2/21/2015 12:18 am : link
Donnell has a ton of ability and even Fells showed something. They'll add a decent veteran type along the way and pick up a mid/late round type like Boss or Ballard. Not to mention TE actually seems to be reasonably deep even though there aren't any obvious blue chippers.
Finally got to check out today's action
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 2/21/2015 2:35 am : link
La'el Collins is the best OLineman in this draft. I had him and Scherff almost equal before today, but after today I just feel more comfortable with Collins. I don't blame Scherff for getting hurt, but I do reward Collins for showing really impressive skills today and confirming what I see on "tape". Very complete prospect.

He's big, he's nasty, he's got great feet, he's versatile which the Giants love, he got the best of BBI favorite Dante Fowler in their matchup, he can get to the 2nd level, he was a star at the Senior Bowl, he just killed it at the Combine today.

Peat and Flowers fit the prototype of "Blue Goose LT" prototype better than Collins does. So I get why BBI is focusing on those 2 guys more than him. But this guy is one of my favorite Guard prospects in recent memory and I hope we don't pass up on him because Guards aren't valuable. I think Martin in Dallas proved that wrong. And like Martin, I think Collins can play Tackle in the future if his team wants him to.

Flowers looked stiff and plodding
chopperhatch : 2/21/2015 3:20 am : link
, Sherrf looked like a Guard, Clemmings looked light.

I hate to just stick with the announcers, but I thought DJ HUMPHRIES and Collins looked very good. Collins has the versatility too. I thought Collins looked really good today...fluidity and he popped the bags.
I thought Collins did well
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 2/21/2015 7:14 am : link
Too, looked the best IMO.

Peat looked like the Michelin baby, Flowers was slow out of his stance.

Schreff was loking good too but Def a Guard.

The separation between the top and the bottom was not that much. Giants should go BPA because of this and can still get a good OL in RD 2.

Good point. There are just so many holes on the team right now.

Let's see how they stand after FA. I hope they can take the long-term view of things.
Dupree
stretch234 : 2/21/2015 7:45 am : link
I do not see how you watch tape of him and Fowler and come away the Dupree is a better player - because he is 3/4" taller and 7 pounds heavier.

Fowler played 3 positions at FL and played at almost 280 1 year

I would draft him, have him gain the weight again to 270-5 and leave him at DE. I think he will be a better pro than college player because of all the switching around

His conditioning appeared to be terrible. He has a lot of loose meat on him too. He is just a massive guy from head to toe...almost seems like he may be too big. Would be interested to speak with his S&C coaches.

Glad this was mentioned, he has a strange build with very heavy, bloated and soft legs, he apoears to have the potential to really swell up. I'm not a fan especially at #9. I'm also surprised there's not more love for La'el Collins who looks the part and graded out very well today, he would be such a stud whether plufgging him in early on at G then moving him out to LT once Beatty's fate has been decided post 2015 season or RT with Pugh moving to the inside. Interested to see Kevin White who will be hard to overlook.
No doubt, Peat has work to do
JonC : 2/21/2015 8:18 am : link
to reconfigure his body, because right now he's a 20 year old carrying a ton of baby fat. But, he's a huge, plenty athletic, and the best pure left tackle in the draft.

Scherff might be

After watching some tape, I agree that Fowler is more explosive than DuPree. Let's see how the drills go tomorrow. I think both players will do well in change of direction and short area drills. I like The fact that both have played a hybrid role yet still project to a true 4-3 DE.
Just to follow up a post I made yesterday on Fisher
sjnyfan : 2/21/2015 9:54 am : link
His 20 yd ss was 3rd best since 2006. Jason Kelce of the Eagles (2011) and Samson Satele (2007) of the Dolphins are the two ahead of him. His 3 cone was tied for 4th since 06
I think Collins may be the best overall, and safest, OL pick

May not have the highest ceiling, but may have the highest floor. Could come right in and start at RT, and then move to LT.
