2015 NFL COMBINE DAY 3 THREAD DL, LB

sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 8:55 am
Just like Day 1 of the combine, there are alot of players looking to gain separation on their draft status. It will also be followed very closely as it can very well be in play with the 9th pick.

Unfortunately, Shane Ray won't be participating due to injury. However his teammate, Markus Golden can help himself with a strong showing. Another pair of SEC teammates will be looking for a strong day as well. Kentucky's Alvin 'Bud' Dupree (who actually will be performing with the LBs) I think will light it up today, although I'm not sold on him as the 9th pick. His teammate Za'Darius Smith had a very good Shrine Week and can capitalize with a good day. Speaking of strong All Star weeks, Carl Davis from Iowa was one of the best players at the Senior Bowl regardless of position. However some choice words at interviews raise questions about work ethic. Depending on his interviews this week as well as his workout today can go a long way to solidifying a first rd grade. There are several names in play including Danny Shelton with his massive size, Dante Fowler who arguably has the top motor and Randy Fregory, who has a high ceiling but a low floor. But overall this is a talented bunch performing today. New names will emerge. There are many candidates but two that I'll be looking for are LSU's Danielle Hunter and Clemson's Grady Jarret. I think they're both a bit under the radar who could have very good days today.

At LB, my top two are Eric Kendricks and Clemson's Stephone Anthony. I think they will have good days. This year's Chris Borland will be Denzel Perryman. He's short, squatty, bulky and I don't think he'll time well but so what? He's a football player. I'm not a fan of Benardrick McKinney at ILB, especially at 9 but he's a bit of a freakish athlete too. Depending on how he performs though I'd wonder if some teams start considering him at OLB which I think he'd be a better player at the pro level. Paul Dawson of TCU will time well but REALLY needed to nail his interviews if he wants a chance to be a high pick. Red Flags. Shaq Thompson will only be performing as a LB so he'll need to nail it. Two underrated players that I'd like to see in blue that are underrated are Ben Heeney and Martrell Spaight.

Wow! Who should have been the pick in retrospect?

Tyler Eifert.

Yeah...I still can't let it go.
Henry Anderson is another DE/Nascar DT who intrigues me.

1.63 10 yard at 294 pounds, and shows that quickness off the snap on the field.
crazy how underrated
area junc : 2/22/2015 1:24 pm : link
beasley's been on the amateur draft sites around the net. he's arguably the best player after leonard williams in the entire draft. elite pass rusher

i dont think theres a prayer he's on the board at 9 but if he is, we have to take him
I think its because he was considered too small
chris r : 2/22/2015 1:24 pm : link
now that he's bulked up 10 lbs and shown he's still super athletic his stock should rocket.
Dupree
jayg5 : 2/22/2015 1:27 pm : link
42 inch vertical, also best standing broad jump
Hope he still isn't in convo at 9 even after impressive numbers
mabye so
area junc : 2/22/2015 1:27 pm : link
but his movement abilities are alien-like. and he's been a sick pass rusher from the jump. not a 1-hit wonder. proven sack master against big competition
I did look
Reale01 : 2/22/2015 1:31 pm : link
I understand what you are saying as I initially thought the same thing. However, in retrospect I think the Giants did well.

Kyle Long
Tyler Eifert
Desmond Trufant
Sharrif Floyd
Bjoern Werner
Xavier Rhodes
Datone Jones
DeAndre Hopkins
Sylvester Williams
Cordarrelle Patterson
Alec Ogletree
Travis Frederick
Matt Elam

At the time I remember talk of Werner or Jones or Shariff glad we got Pugh. Then Hankins in round 2. Also Chicago tool Long with the next pick so I don't think ALL the OLs were gone. Certainly NOT a mistake.

4.57
BTW LB18
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 1:42 pm : link
was supposed to be AJ Johnson but he was uninvited. I don't ever remember that happening. Aggravated rape charge earlier this month. He was a fringe draft pick without red flags but he may not even be signed as a UDFA now. Certainly off of the Giants board.
Dawson
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 1:42 pm : link
4.95 but looked like he pulled up
Bud Dupree
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 1:43 pm : link
1.60 10 yd split

4.57
bud Dupree

1.64 10 yd split

4.66
Nope 4.57
Big Rick in FL : 2/22/2015 1:54 pm : link
For Dupree. Also had a 42 inch vertical & 11'6 broad jump at 269 pounds. That's insane.
Benardrick McKinney
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 1:55 pm : link
1.74 10 yd

4.78
Perryman
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 1:56 pm : link
1.69 split

4.81
Mayock
Mike in NY : 2/22/2015 1:58 pm : link
Just stop
Good time for Kendricks
Big Rick in FL : 2/22/2015 2:03 pm : link
Not bad for McKinney. Slower than I thought though.

Sy any opinions on Bud Dupree? He's going to be talked about a lot to the Giants I'm sure. Good size, decent arm length and hands. Very explosive. Anybody know his bench?
Shaq Thompson
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 2:03 pm : link
1.78 10 yd split

4.72
Shaq
Big Rick in FL : 2/22/2015 2:04 pm : link
With a terrible time.
Big Rick
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 2:05 pm : link
I don't think Dupree lifted this week. He's also not going to do anymore today. Might be related to a groin injury he had at the end of the season
Ahh ok
Big Rick in FL : 2/22/2015 2:06 pm : link
Yeah I didn't see it anywhere. Figured he probably didn't.

Sj any opinions on him at 9?

Looks like he got off to a bad start.
I think Dupree is cementing himself as an OLB in a 3-4
robbieballs2003 : 2/22/2015 2:08 pm : link
Watching film on him he gets pushed around too easily when he has his hand down in the dirt unless he just flew by the OL. With his explosive numbers I think he is a perfect OLB in a 3-4.
Right now I think Dupree is more of an athlete
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 2:16 pm : link
than football player. He's going to need some coaching up. There's some inconsistency in his game, he doesn't always diagnose plays well which makes him a step late and gets him taken out of the play. I hear comparisons to NE's Jamie Collins because of the athleticism but even Collins was a late 2nd rounder who needed coaching up by one of the best defensive minds ever in Belichick and it's still a work in progress, though you can see the light come on last year. Loads of potential but 9 is too high. I wouldn't mind 40 and hopefully you can put polish to his game. I see him as a situation sub package rush guy early in his career.
If Beasley were our pick
chopperhatch : 2/22/2015 2:16 pm : link
Where woukd he play? Will Im assuming? Anybody know about him in coverage?
Never saw Dawson
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 2:17 pm : link
as a guy running a 4.95 or 4.96
Soo many good rushers
CromartiesKid21 : 2/22/2015 2:25 pm : link
in the 3-4 that will be available around when Giants pick. Its a shame we will miss out on top end talent because of the 4-3 scheme.
Dawson is going to be a steal for someone
chris r : 2/22/2015 2:34 pm : link
no way is he that slow.

Stephone is going to be a great cover LB. One of the few LBs I'd like to see the Giants target.

He's played the line. Don't see him as a 4-3 OLB. He's either a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB.
I still really like Danny Shelton
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 2/22/2015 6:07 pm : link
he's just such a tank. But his 10yd split is scary slow and he tends to play high. Slow off the snap + poor leverage = awful awful combination. I still think he's such a powerful guy who can eat so much space that he's still a Top 10 player in this draft and best DLineman after Williams.

But as far as the Giants are concerned, there are better fits at DT who could be had in a slight trade down. And they're not THAT much worse than Shelton.

he's been describing himself as a Von Miller or Bruce Irvin to teams when they ask him. miller plays 43 SLB and DEnd in the subpackages and is a perennial DPOY candidate when hes healthy. imo beasley is faster than miller and miller is more physical

if we took him, i assume spags would play him at SLB dusting off the 50 fronts from 07. and then osi's job in the subs
Kansas Mike LB
Carl in CT : 2/22/2015 6:58 pm : link
Ben Heeney faster 3 cone then ODB. Sick!!!
I feel better having Spags on the staff, because I think he
CT Charlie : 2/22/2015 7:59 pm : link
has a better idea of what he wants for his scheme than Perry did.

The position Kiwi started to look good in before going on IR that year.

I could get behind a SAM

Who can convert to a pass rusher on 3rd or obvious passing downs.
Philosophical question
Torrag : 2/23/2015 11:26 am : link
Does the Giants aborted signing signing of O'Brien Schofield due to medicals preface a new willingness to delve into the hybrid pass rushers market? If so we may all be surprised by the #9 pick...
He's listed as a DE by the Seahawks
JonC : 2/23/2015 11:36 am : link
6'3 260, and I don't recall seeing him in space too often. I don't recall if they use him more as a fifth DL or not, so is he really a hybrid.

I don't see 260# there
Torrag : 2/23/2015 11:46 am : link
and his Combine medicals had him at 6'2 221# coming out which tend to be much more accurate than team bios. He's essentially a rotational pass rush specialist for them. He certainly doesn't fit the Giants typical DE physical template.
He's ~250 now
JonC : 2/23/2015 11:57 am : link
Definitely not their usual DE fit, but I hope Spags has a much better idea of how to utilize such a player than his predecessor. Otherwise, it's more or less another disconnect between Reese's branch and the coaches.
the Ravens play a hybrid scheme mixing 4-3 & 3-4 elements
Torrag : 2/23/2015 12:05 pm : link
Spags experience there could infuse that philosophy here. Baltimore's defense has had more success in recent years than we've enjoyed. The point is a guy like Schofield fits that style and JR was dipping into that market even before Spags returned.

The collegiate game simply isn't churning out enough top 4-3 DE prospects to fill the need. If the Schofield interest is a pre-cursor to a shifting defensive paradigm we could get a surprise defensive #9 selection.
having said that Torrag
idiotsavant : 2/23/2015 1:33 pm : link
you cannot run that hybrid without The Beef, which may be harder to find than The End, so...9 may lend itself to beefyness.

I still go back to that adding a NT type and a big 3/4 end (one that can sub inside as well as out), which together make the variety of lines you can field much greater such as:

a 3 look with a zero player (not suggested if small ended)

a 5 'look' with a zero player

the 4 skinny on long D+D - but not -that- skinny (the edwards/anderson types plus hank inside)
RE: Torrag
JonC : 2/23/2015 1:37 pm : link
Yeah, I posted in another thread today the same sentiment regarding the edge rusher options at #9 possibly being tempting for them to push the envelope.

It's a shite year to have a top 10 pick, unfortunately.
