2015 NFL COMBINE DAY 3 THREAD DL, LB

sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 8:55 am
Just like Day 1 of the combine, there are alot of players looking to gain separation on their draft status. It will also be followed very closely as it can very well be in play with the 9th pick.

Unfortunately, Shane Ray won't be participating due to injury. However his teammate, Markus Golden can help himself with a strong showing. Another pair of SEC teammates will be looking for a strong day as well. Kentucky's Alvin 'Bud' Dupree (who actually will be performing with the LBs) I think will light it up today, although I'm not sold on him as the 9th pick. His teammate Za'Darius Smith had a very good Shrine Week and can capitalize with a good day. Speaking of strong All Star weeks, Carl Davis from Iowa was one of the best players at the Senior Bowl regardless of position. However some choice words at interviews raise questions about work ethic. Depending on his interviews this week as well as his workout today can go a long way to solidifying a first rd grade. There are several names in play including Danny Shelton with his massive size, Dante Fowler who arguably has the top motor and Randy Fregory, who has a high ceiling but a low floor. But overall this is a talented bunch performing today. New names will emerge. There are many candidates but two that I'll be looking for are LSU's Danielle Hunter and Clemson's Grady Jarret. I think they're both a bit under the radar who could have very good days today.

At LB, my top two are Eric Kendricks and Clemson's Stephone Anthony. I think they will have good days. This year's Chris Borland will be Denzel Perryman. He's short, squatty, bulky and I don't think he'll time well but so what? He's a football player. I'm not a fan of Benardrick McKinney at ILB, especially at 9 but he's a bit of a freakish athlete too. Depending on how he performs though I'd wonder if some teams start considering him at OLB which I think he'd be a better player at the pro level. Paul Dawson of TCU will time well but REALLY needed to nail his interviews if he wants a chance to be a high pick. Red Flags. Shaq Thompson will only be performing as a LB so he'll need to nail it. Two underrated players that I'd like to see in blue that are underrated are Ben Heeney and Martrell Spaight.

At DE Preston Smith could be of interest to the Giants
Torrag : 2/22/2015 9:03 am : link
Smith fits the physical prototype the team favors at the psoition. Rumors have swirled they have their eye on Lynden Trail as well.

At LB McKinney could have an Urlacher type day. If he pulls it off he'll vault up draft boards.
Paul Dawson

What are these red flags people speak about? I've heard it numerous times and nobody has given an answer when asked.
Can't believe I forgot to mention Leonard Williams
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 9:05 am : link
Some believe he'll time under 5 seconds in the 40.

Vic Beasley surprised me with his weight and reps on the bench. I wonder how the extra weight will affect his timed drills.
I could not have less interest

in Randy Gregory. I saw him get manhandled all day when they played Wisconsin.
Number of other DL I like

Big Rick, he was late to meetings several times. He's missed weight room sessions. There's word he doesn't put in the film room work. He was suspended for Adderall. One of his own coaches said anonymously he's more of a role player than All American and Patterson has called him a knucklehead.

is too high for Dupree IMO. I'm more interested in Preston Smith or Za'Darius Smith later on in the draft. Carl Davis apparently put a lot of people off with his interviews at the SB. Malcolm Brown would be fine after a trade down. Hardison would be a good day three pick. OO from UCLA has had two hip surgeries IIRC. Also like Spaight.

The 1.75 10 I look at more because DT rarely run 40 yards straight

Had a big East West Shrine game. Played out of position at the U.

4.77 but the 1.59 10 yd split is a very good time. Most Rbs and Wrs didn't time that well yesterday. Sleeper.

5.19, 1.87 10 yd split at 6045, 320 lbs.

For Beasley, Fowler and Gregory. They've all had a pretty good showing at the combine. Between the 2 QBs, Williams, Fowler, Gregory, Ray, Shelton and the 3 WRs the Giants will get a really good player.

That's fast. Beasley has made himself some money this week. Almost 250 with 35 reps and 4.53 40. He might be a top 10 pick.

agreed w/others, buzz the malcom brown could climb way up a la fletcher cox. he is an outstanding fit in Spagnuolo's scheme that is for damn sure. inside penetrator

Fowler in the high 260's would have sold himself as an elite 4-3 end. He may still do that, but if Bud Dupree runs well (albeit with the LBs) he could eclipse him.
I'm hoping Beasley does LB drills as well
sjnyfan : 2/22/2015 9:44 am : link
If he can backpedal he might be in play as a 4-3 LB Anthony Barr transitioned much better than most thought last year

Big Rick in FL : 2/22/2015 9:44 am : link
It's not like he can't get too the high 260s. He played at 278 in college prior to this season.

Williams

Cooper

Harold with a 4.53...
Dunedin81 : 2/22/2015 10:08 am : link
another guy who made himself some money today. He certainly could have tried to put on weight (260-265 might have been a more reasonable goal for him) but marketing himself as a 3-4 OLB or a hybrid type is a reasonable move with his speed and quickness.

I'd take Fowler or White or trade down. But you have to find a partner, which is going to be hard in this draft. The question is whether the Giants would trade down if White or Cooper are still available. Somebody might move up a little for one of them, but I think both will be gone.

He certainly has a thick lower body, so you're probably right that in light of where he has played before teams are likely to think he can put on weight without losing much in the way of speed and quickness.
