After spending this past week at the combine, I now believe the salary cap for this year is going to come in at around $145 million per team. ESPN's current projections have the Giants with $22,617,930 in cap room if we assume a $145 million cap.
from a cap perspective, there's limited reason to renegotiate just for the heck of it.
It makes more sense to work on Prince before Eli. I don't think there's much danger in allowing Eli to play out his contract. Prince could be tempted to test the waters. in either case, it's going to take two to tango.
I like to think he's happy and comfortable in NY, but once he gets through this season and becomes a FA, what incentive does he NOT have to test the waters?
Some team like the Texans or Bengals or someone with a solid team, good OL, nice skill position players, might feel like a QB is the only thing holding them back from a championship contender.
Wouldn't that make it more expensive to keep Eli than extending him now when no one else can even talk to him?
I could be wrong, but it seems like letting him play out this season and then discussing a new deal would be risky and the cap element is a small part of it.
but overall, I don't think he's unhappy here, he's not coming cheaper this year than next, and there's no hometown discount. basically, I think that Eli is a Giant as long as the Giants want him, and the cost is going to be the same.
definitely.. They can easily create more cap room this year... I expect them to sign a RT or G.. one quality safety.. and at least one LB and hopefully a DT in FA..
pretty good number. I am so pumped for the Giants next season. OBJ has in my view changed the entire feeling coming off of last year. Its Eli's and Toms last stand and I couldnt be more excited to root for them.
If it's done too soon, imo, FAs will have more leverage in what they demand. Eli will get done this year so him testing the FA waters is a moot point. I think it gets done just prior to camp so there's money for FA signings during the season. Again, this is just my opinion.
I see why they didn't (thy wanted to see him in a new system first). I expect them to do so this year based off of last season and his contractual status now (he only has one more year left on his deal as opposed to two).
Look, the guy can still play and his "genes" are solid, his pedigree is solid, his health is solid. You sign him to a 5 year deal with the 5th year being a "joke" and he is cutable after 3 years should he "God forbid" need to be due to injury or poor play or whatever.
You sign JPP to a "good deal" if at all possible or just tag him and see how he does. We have the space.
You sign Prince to a five year deal as well. He missed half the season so his market value is better for us this year. He is a good player and you need corners who can tackle now-a-days as well as cover. Why tackle? Cause the rules make it easy for guys to catch the short stuff.
Build the team around Eli while he is still young enough to be elite these next 3 years or so. His arm was sound last year and he hasn't been hurt. I like Nassib but he is an unknown in terms of true real game ability.
One crazy thing I dreamed is that the Giants traded Eli on draft day for two #1's and a starting RT. Then i realized that likely wouldn't be a good move given premium QB's are so so hard to find. I mean, imagine if we knew for sure Nassib was QB rating 100 type of guy who'd stand for 16 games? You could get a lot on the market for a real QB these days, even one who is 34.
I see why they didn't (thy wanted to see him in a new system first).
They didn't do it because it was cheaper to keep him under his current deal than tear it up and give him a new one which would've paid him north of $20M/year. And again this year it may be cheaper to have him play out the current deal at $17M for the final year than give him a new deal. They will still have the option of the franchise tag if they are worried about him hitting the open market in 2016.
Not saying an extension won't happen, but it's not a slam dunk, because the numbers will be huge.
my thoughts, too. People are talking Eli getting north of 20 mil per. why tear up 17 mil to give him 20? of course, the back end of the 20 per isn't going to be guaranteed, but the 17 mil is going to be converted to signing bonus, which will then be added to the signing bonus he's going to get anyhow. the 17 mil isn't magically disappearing, just pushed in future caps (same thought process last year, except then you'd have TWO years of salary pushed into the future). From a cap POV, extending Eli is not a no brainer/ slam dunk.
an additional consideration is how they're going to mesh some of the massive cap hits of several players. IF JPP, Eli, and Prince are all inked this year, you'll have massive escalations in salary all happening in a year or two. ideally, you don't want them all happening at the same time. so it may make more sense to delay Eli simply to spread them out.
Don't be fooled by his 12.5 sacks. 9 of them were after the team was out of the playoff hunt against the redskins, the titans and Jags. JPP =s overrated and under performing.
I wouldnt offer him anything after this year, let him play under the Franchise Tag. Honestly, he did very well in run game this year, but his sacks are beyond over bloated against poor teams.
2 or 3 players off the defense and replace him with who?
The defense sucked with him this year. They were awful. He was average against the run and his sack numbers were over inflated against bad teams. Let him walk and have $15 million extra to spend on your whole team. You don't give $15 million to average because your scared you may not find better

The point about the cap increasing is legit. I've read next year could be as high as 160M.
If Eli were extended last year with the lower cap, or this year at 143M (I read), he will or would have gotten less than with a 160M cap.
Probably not. He's probably closer to 13 mil a year!
Mario Williams only got 25M guaranteed, and ok that was 2 years ago, but Williams was more highly regarded than JPP IMO.
Michael Johnson, 2014 UFA signed a 5 year 43.5M contract with 16M guaranteed.
I see JPP at about 5 years 60 - 65M, 25M - 30 guaranteed.
And I think that's fair.
