Cap-strapped Saints struggling to keep Evans and Grubbs.

Big Blue Blogger : 2/23/2015 11:52 am
Evans had looked like the more likely cut because his dead-money hit was a bit smaller, plus he's older and more banged up. Now the parties are working on a restructure, but the outcome is far from certain. Keeping both guards seems to be a long shot.

Any interest in either? Best case is a plug-and-play solution to a glaring problem. Worst case is another Chris Snee situation. Personally, I'd pass unless one of them can be had with very little long-term commitment. Wouldn't mind seeing the Giants pay up for a year or two, while they coach up a young prospect from day two or three of the draft. Keeping Eli's pocket clean is worth a lot, assuming these guys can still do it.

NYG liked Grubbs in the draft

and they do tend to circle back on such players, if they become available.
Only at a heavy discount

No to Grubbs, but I'd look at Evans

He would be cheaper than Iupati who is younger and in his prime, but it doesn't force us to go OL early if the value isn't there. Personally I feel the best value in the first three rounds will be WR/DE at 9, RB at 40, and LB/OL at 74.
It'll be interesting to see how NO handles this.

They've had an odd OL for a while now-- All-Pro caliber Guards, and replaceable Tackles.

They count on Brees' uncanny pocket presence and the misdirection and quick-passing in the offensive design to take care of outside pressure threats. Instead, they sink their resources into preventing interior pressure, and to opening throwing lanes for their vertically challenged passer. Their Tackles operate on 1 rule: Don't get beat inside. (That's how Charles Brown was able to look somewhat competent playing there.)
Grubbs looked old
djstat : 2/23/2015 12:31 pm : link
in 2014. He aged fast.
Signing players who are cut is also beneficial in another way:

they don't factor into the compensation equation for compensator draft picks the following year.
$20M over the Cap?
figgy2989 : 2/23/2015 12:47 pm : link
I know they have a lot of money tied up in Brees, but who else on this team has that significant of a cap hit to put them $20M over.
I forgot the $11M they are paying Jimmy Graham
figgy2989 : 2/23/2015 12:51 pm : link
and paying Junior Galette $15.5M a year is just absurd.

Figgy: It's not just those guys.

Eight Saints have huge 2015 cap numbers over $9MM. Brees is the 500-pound gorilla; but Galette, Graham, Evans, Byrd, Colston, Grubbs and even Lofton are way up there.

A lot of their 2015 excess is in roster bonuses, which can be converted to signing bonuses to spread the pain over multiple years.
Why would th eJints be interested i at all in Evans?

Old and banged up is not what you want to see when considering signing a player.
Evans has only missed two starts in his career.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/23/2015 1:54 pm : link
He played hurt in 2014. Gutted it out, and still made the Pro Bowl, FWIW - on reputation. He'll be 32 when the season starts. Obviously, you can't sink a lot of guaranteed money into his future; but if the focus is on getting the most out of Eli's remaining peak years, plugging the hole at guard is kind of an urgent priority.

The kiss of death: "Evans has only missed two starts in his career."
Evans & Grubbs
stretch234 : 2/23/2015 4:42 pm : link
Evans will be 32 at the start of the season

Grubbs will be 31 in March

Clint Boling will be 26 at the start of the season - that is the guy to sign
stretch234: That's sort of apples and oranges.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/23/2015 5:25 pm : link
To outbid the Bengals - and others - for Boling will require a good-sized chunk of guaranteed money that represents a multi-year commitment. That's fine, and it's one approach to filling the hole at guard. Another option is to sign an older vet to start while a draftee (ideally, one with a higher ceiling than Boling) learns the ropes. Both approaches are valid. Since we don't know how the Giants view the draft class, it's hard to say which approach is more attractive.
Pass.....

I would rather build through the draft. make good choices and build a core we can keep for the long haul.
absolutely
NYG4246 : 2/23/2015 7:32 pm : link
I'd take either one. Probably prefer Grubbs but theyre both very good linemen.....then use the #9 on another OL and the line went from bad to top notch
