I was of the same mind with regards to Eli. There was supposedly an offer that included an extra 2nd round choice to move down 2 spots and than take Big Ben. i wish they had done that and taken the QB to trade to San Diego at the least. San Diego would have probably just demanded the extra pick though.
The only two that come to mind were Prince and Eli
Most of the time (since George Young came on board) I've been pleasantly surprised by how well the pick turned out (think Petitgout and Shawn Williams) after throwing the remote.

I find it hard to argue with how it worked out. I mean Ben's been to three SB's so maybe it's a wash, but I have no complaints in hindsight.
But I felt at the time once SD drafted Eli, the Giants should have been in the drivers seat and acquired Eli on better terms. But like I said, hard to argue with how it turned out.
Missed the 10 year thing so remove Shaun Alexander/Dayne - it's probably the only time I was sure a player (Alexander) at a position the Giants drafted (Dayne) would be better than the guy the Giants drafted.
Ross and Eli are the only two for me and Ross was really just his age, and he worked out ok too.
So, like I said, I'd be a terrible GM.
I think everyone not named Bum Phillips wanted LT.
Simply too hard to predict how things will unfold, there's always a handful of surprises even when you're totally expecting the unexpected. Two of the best examples are Prince and Kiwi. Not a damn soul on this board saw either of those things happening.
The one exception for me was Brandon Jacobs. I can't claim to have known him from his short time at Auburn and I'm not exactly a Southern Illinois fanatic. I just remember looking at a list of RBs on one of the draft sites and thinking there had to be a typo for this Jacobs kid to be listed as a 6'4", 254 lb HB. Typed the name into YouTube and fell in love. And I did talk about him here pre-draft. Then that Sunday morning came. Still the good, traditional draft weekend at this point. I was watching from my bed when the Giants selecting was up and Jacobs name ran across the bottom of the screen. I'm instantly jumping up and down on the bed like an over-sugared toddler.
It's the one and only instance of the team drafting a prospect I really, really wanted.
I used 10 years but take the conversation as far back as you desire.
Initial thoughts after each pick. Generally have liked our picks especially the more recent picks. Did not like Kiwi and Wilson on draft day, but liked a lot shortly after once I knew more about them.

Usually it is because the players I want are gone before we pick. Probably one of the most popular picks ever was Ron Dayne (me included), and we all know how that worked out. The Giants are very good about hiding their interest in players. Until the last days before the draft, no one was even mentioning Beckham for us.
Oh you are very right that I could not see Prince coming. But when the Giants were on the clock I was praying pick Prince.
I got ya genesis, didn't mean for it to sound like I was calling BS on wanting Prince, I know you meant once he slid and the Giants were on the clock. Prince is about the one time that I felt confident I knew what name was getting called when the Giants were on the clock.
Nicks and last year I wanted Beckham or Ebron. At first I only wanted Ebron. As the draft got closer I started leaning towards Beckham.
Normally I only have 1 or 2 players that I want. This year is so wide open I'd be happy with a ton of guys. Fowler Jr, Ray, Gregory, Beasley, Shelton, White, Cooper & Parker. Possibly even Benardrick McKinney just because I want a stud LB so bad.
Yup those are the two players I wanted. With Sean Taylor leading the way. Fortunately I was wrong in that and the Giants made a great selection in Eli. Unfortunately Sean Taylor passed away :( Sean Taylor was always so nice to me. Met him probably 10 times from his freshman year in college and about 2 weeks before he passed away we had breakfast with him & his cousins.
but seriously, I am more concerned with the position they choose more than the individual player because I figure they know the ins and outs of the individuals much better than me. Although I feel more informed than ever thanks to Sy56.
I still shudder when I read that name. I remember a year, maybe two, after he was drafted an article came out about teams taking players despite highly visible, screaming loud red flags. An anonymous source talked about a team who selected a kid who told teams at the combine, point blank, that he wasn't passionate about football and would really rather work in a zoo. Maybe near where he went to school. In Florida. I was always suspicious, and a post-career article where Jospeh talked about his love of animals confirmed it, at least for me.
They've hit some home runs over the years, but I'll never forget the half blind DE or the would-be zoo keeper...
2001 Todd Heap over Will Allen
2003 Larry Johnson over William Joseph
2006 DeMeco Ryans over Kiwi (Came to like Kiwi)
2007 Beason over Ross
2012 Cordy Glenn over Wilson (Came to like Wilson)
2013 Sharrif Floyd over Pugh (Like Pugh now)
Under those circumstances I would have wanted Sean Taylor too. The only guy I really knew in a draft was Tony Siragusa who went undrafted and signed with the Colts. I really wanted the Giants to put a Big Blue uniform on him.
It's pretty much downhill from there:
John Hicks.
Mark Ingram.
Derek Brown.
I would add Kenny Phillips, but that was more a case of "He's our guy; hope it works out."
Heading into the draf I wanted Aaron Ross becaus we needed a CB
Wanted Lewan last year and apparently be was on the Giants want list had OBJ not been there.
Wanted Jessie Armstead way back in the 2nd round yet he lasted until round 8 I believe lol. Of course, I always wanted Miami players such as Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, etc. Wanted no part of William Joseph as Wilfork made the Miami DLine. Kinda surprised McDougal was such a bust.
Still not happy Gaines was passed on last year. He was great for the Rams.
"Collins is fine. Just needs a better line. All of these QBs are overhyped. Roethlisburger played against garbage, something about Rivers bothers me, and there's really a small chance that Eli ends up anywhere near his brother or father for that matter. What would the odds be for Eli to be an elite QB? "
11 years and 4 SBs between Ben and Eli, only thing I was even remotely close on was Rivers' douchebaggery.
Loved Sean Taylor. I still enjoy watching his highlights on youtube. Seeing a guy that big, run that fast and dominate was/is still very enjoyable. It's a shame his life ended far too early.
I see who the Giants pick. Figure out why and then I try to like it.
Instead of acting incredulously about any player/pick who hasn't proven themself yet.
One of but a million differences you discover along the journey from 20 to 30...well, for me anyway
(I barely remember that age range!)
But why bother barking at the moon so early? See what happens with the picks of your favorite team. You can still question it--but "throw the remote" upset? Relax.
it's only been Hakeem Nicks in rd 1. In total it's been Nicks and Steve Smith. I can't say JPP because I was hoping for Earl Thomas. But Seattle got him before we did.
I normally don't have a favorite so it's easy for me to jump onboard with who the Giants select.
Last year was an exception when I hoped we get Aaron Donald. I saw him as a real play maker who might need a year like most DTs. Loved Beckham once I looked at some tape though. Great pick.
This year I see Fowler/White and possibly Parker as a pick for the Gmen. I'd be happy with Fowler or White.
I usually have a good grip on what position they will select in round 1. Regardless of what the Giants say, it's not usually pure BPA. It's BPA at a position of need in round 1, like when Wilson and Pugh were taken.
Last 10 years the guys I wanted that the Giants picked were:
Drafted the exact guy I wanted in Wheatley, we all know how that turned out, my delusions of the dynamic backfield was just that. Since I can be honest with myself, it is obvious that the draft is far from a science and is between science and art. The drafting process in the NFL has improved, but it is still between science and art.
W. Richburg
J. Hankins
D. Moore
K. Phillips
M. Manningham
A. Ross, although I hoped they'd move up for Revis
Eli
So now that I think about it, they rarely pick who I want them too. Bahumbug. Looking back on some of those drafts though Ugghhhh, down right yuk. I will say they hit in 2005 big time after what they gave up for Eli.
Leading up to the Prince selection on here was like a countdown as each pick happen and his name wasn't announce. I think everybody was hoping he would keep falling :)
Derek Brown(wish I hadn't and the Giants hadn't), Brad Maynard(thought we took him a round too soon), Shaun Williams, Shockey(hated tennessee bluffing a pick out of us), Will Beatty(thought we'd take him earlier, glad we didn't), Reuben Randle(again thought we'd take him earlier, glad we didn't), loved Hankins(thought he could have been our 1st rounder)...
strangely I can't recall if I wanted Kenny Phillips or not but the BBI debate on him raged for weeks. I didn't hate the idea but many thought he'd bust out.
Beckham Jr. as the guy I fell in love with 1 1/2 months before the draft.
Pierre Paul when Reese went to South Florida game in Jersey, people thought they were scouting Selvie.. but I was lucky enough to see Pierre Paul the game prior. And wanted him from then on.
and Justin Tuck. I wanted him in the second round the year they got him in the third. Started a thread about him his sophomore year.
Hated Ron Dayne pick.. didn't like Pugh. Didn't like Kiawanuka (not enough of first step for me).
Every year is not a party in my draft room day of draft.. but I've had my moments.
I forgot about Eli.....was focused only on direct drafting.
That was a roller coaster draft for me to watch; rooting for him to be available, then he's picked by SD, then rumors of a trade, then trade likely not happening, then PRivers and acceptance of that pick, then the trade announcement, then discouraged by what they gave up.
After I got off the roller coaster and caught my breath I was finally able to enjoy them getting Eli.
2007 - I wanted Jon Beason or Reggie Nelson
2008 - Kenny Phillips
2009 - Hakeem Nicks
2010 - Sean Weatherspoon
2011 - I didn't follow the draft closely that year.
2012 - David Wilson

Wow, I agree with all. My feelings were the same with evey one of your observations. I felt the same.

1997-Ike Hilliard- was very happy with the pick as I liked Hilliard a lot, but not who I would have picked, I wanted the LBer that went next. Wanted: James Farrior

2003-William Joseph- not a fan of the player but they desperately needed a DT so I was ok with it since all the other DTs were gone. I would have picked: Kwame Harris
2004-Rivers/Manning- The top guys I wanted in order that year were Manning, Rothlisberger, Sean Taylor and Gallery. Loved that they ended up with Eli. I would have stayed put and taken Ben.
2005-no 1st round pick
2006-Mathias Kiwanuka- Hated the pick. Wanted: DeMeco Ryans
2007-Aaron Ross- Hated the pick. Wanted Reggie Nelson
2008-Kenny Phillips- Liked the pick Preferred: Trell Johnson
2009-Hakeem Nicks- Loved the pick (4)
2010-Jason Pierre-Paul- I had heard he was the guy they were targeting a few days before the draft, so I was locked onto him, though was concerned about the risk. Glad they got their guy (5)
2011-Prince Amukamara- Was shocked he was still there, no brainer pick. (6)
2012-David Wilson- liked the player, liked the pick Wanted: Jonathan Martin
2013-Justin Pugh- Liked the player, liked the pick Wanted: Tyler Eifert
2014-Odell Beckham- he was in my top 3 when they drafted him, so I loved the pick. Zack Martin was number 1 and Aaron Donald was number 2.
So, 27 years, 25 picks, I had 6.
If this thread shows anything, well its that its so hard to get the
picks right and I think it is more difficult in the later rounds. Yet every year most of us try to figure it out ahead of time and often hitch our hopes to certain players that end up going somewhere else. Than we all seem to do the same thing. We root for whoever they pick. LOL and I love the draft.
Ike Hilliard, after his one-man-show at the Sugar Bowl.
Then in his second game with the Giants, he gets tackled and is down on the ground.
Along comes Chis Hudson (Jags), hits him in the back with his pads and knees him hard in the head. Ike suffers a broken neck and is never the same again.
Least favorite - Shaun "Mr.Potential" Williams: wanted Faneca, who was not only BPA but the Giants were DESPERATE for a lineman.
was hoping for and thrilled with Eli but that wasn't really a pick.
But I sometimes have guys I don't want them to pick.
The only three that stand out are Aaron Ross. I did not want them to pick Ross.
And Ron Dayne. I wanted Shaun Alexander.
third one, Big Ben/Eli. I did not want to trade up for Eli, I wanted to pick Ben or trade down and pick Ben.
I would make a pretty terrible GM, so 90% of the time I wait and give them the benefit of the doubt.
I find it hard to argue with how it worked out. I mean Ben's been to three SB's so maybe it's a wash, but I have no complaints in hindsight.
