Any Love for Ohio State WR Devin Smith?

TC : 2/24/2015 2:55 pm
One of the Giants interviews. I see a smaller but tough WR with OK speed, good initial quickness and a willingness to fight for the ball.

He doesn't have all of Beckham's tools but does have some similarities in how he plays the game. But wish he wasn't a slot receiver.

Draft Scout pegs him as 2nd round pick, which I don't see. Would maybe take him in the 3rd if BPA, and certainly in the 4th.

Does he hang with

Lil Wayne like OBJ does? if not I'll pass.
I could easily see him going Late 1/Early 2

Not worth the #9 pick and may not be there at 40. After Cooper/White he is on my next tier of WR's with Strong, Dorsett, Perriman, Agholor and Parker (there is substantial dropoff though between Cooper/White and that next tier)
Yep.

Next year I think he'd be the #2 receiver on our team. I don't think we'll have a healthy Cruz and OBJ for more than couple of games. (And I don't think we'll ever see Cruz at more than 80-90% of his best. -- dependable but not a game breaker.)
He's an interesting guy

When it comes to legit downfield threats, Smith is one of the top five WRs in this class. He has a nice burst and unlike most others, he has another gear once he reaches the 20+ yard level of the defense. He just keeps on accelerating. One of those guys that is simply faster than the guy that is covering him.

Problem is, he doesn't do much else on a high level. He doesn't run routes as well as he should when considering his ability to move. He isn't a guy that does well in traffic, not much after the catch either.

Is he a one trick pony or will he work hard to improve the small, finer aspects of the position? Interviews are big for him. He has top tier movement aesthetics but that only gets you so far.
He is very rough on the short to intermediate routes

His production was centered on out-running coverages. The draft status is based on the 40 & his strength. The MSU DBs shut him down in the Big 10 championship game of '13. Miller couldn't throw deep. Smith seemed suffocated by the Soartans' physical press coverage. Doesn't work for the Giants. Not where he is projected to go.
Would seem the Giants may be shopping for . . . .

a receiver who can take the top of D's. (Who isn't!) They also looked at Dorsett, and between the two I like Smith's game better due to his greater physicality.

But if that's all he can do, I don't see spending a high 2nd. And if he's going that high I'd forget it as there will likely be more complete players available at multiple positions.

Some think he'll make a great gunner too, but that's still not enough.

not a bad second receiver field stretcher.

I think there's a really strong chance one of them is a Giant if we pass on WR in the 1st.
Either by chance or by design...

...the days of the Giants spending second- and third-round picks on one-dimensional deep threats to "stretch the field" seem to have ended when Ernie Accorsi called it a career. Ernie was 0-for-4 with Alford, Dixon, Carter and Moss, who combined for about 150 catches and 11 TDs in their Giant careers.

I guess you could put Mario Manningham in that category, but he was a pretty accomplished college receiver.
A speed guy I'm intrigued by is Kenny Bell.

Not because he's good. I have no idea about that. I just like any fast receiver with the balls to throw a block like this.
Kenny Bell blind-sides the other Devin Smith. - ( New Window )

averaged 28.2 from scrimmage....Beckum was 19.5 his last season.
Smith scored 12 td's...Beckum 8....

Smith is a late 1 early 2nd rd guy.
Plenty

I'd like to see them get

on Ty Montgomery in the 4th after something like Danny Shelton, Laken Tomlinson (let's all promise not to call him LT) and David Johnson in Rds 1, 2 , 3
He won't be around by the 3rd
Kyle in NY : 2/24/2015 5:51 pm : link
Would have to be the 2nd round pick. But I could see him going late first. One of the best deep ball receivers I've ever seen. Elite ball skills and ability to track the ball in the air. I'm skeptical about his ability to be an all around WR though. He never really was asked to work the entire route tree in college.
And when he was

In the 2nd No its too early for him yet to see him display other tools worthy of a 2nd round pick. He is one of my favorite WR's but his value is in the 4th round for us I would call a 3rd round pick a very big gamble.
