Landon Collins at #9

CromartiesKid21 : 2/24/2015 6:13 pm
Ran a 4.54 today
"A lot like Deon Bucahanan is a strong saftey on first then a down linebacker in your subpackage a lot like Deon Buchanon. Play safety on first down then drop down {on 3rd downs} and play man coverage."
- Mike Mayock today during the DB combine.

We finished 29th or so in run defense last year and will be searching for safety help all off-season. Hand in Glove scenario?

Quick highlight of skill/weaknesses per Walterfootball.com

Not worth the #9 overall
Torrag : 2/24/2015 6:17 pm : link
One trick pony who is a liability in coverage and lacks the hands for the INT when given the opportunity.
A safety with coverage issues at 9
BillT : 2/24/2015 6:18 pm : link
Instead of White or Cooper or Sheldon. Maybe we should change the whole defense to accommodate him.

Seriously, are you vying to be the worst draft poster in BBI history?
No.
AcidTest : 2/24/2015 6:36 pm : link
Not good enough in coverage.
no
blue42 : 2/24/2015 6:45 pm : link
way....
Safety will be addressed in FA
collins25 : 2/24/2015 6:52 pm : link
May look at talent in 3rd round if value is there.
The next person who suggest Landon Collins @ #9
drkenneth : 2/24/2015 6:52 pm : link
Should be hit with a stick.
It's about value
Rjanyg : 2/24/2015 7:14 pm : link
Value is first determined by talent then by depth. You don't draft a lesser talent because the depth isn't there. You have to draft based on talent first then need. We have to add a veteran and possibly a draft pick but I wouldnt go safety until the 4th round at the earliest. That is where the value starts to match up with our picks. Collins is a late first round talent. He won't be ours first pick at 9, that I can assure you.
If for some reason we trade back 6-10 spots
Ben in Tampa : 2/24/2015 7:15 pm : link
And he's there, maybe we take him. At #9... I don't think he'll be at the top of the Giants board.
I liked the way he looked at the Combine as far as his agility went.
CBSGameFace : 2/24/2015 7:21 pm : link
Much lighter on his feet than I thought.

Devastating hitter, but not a technical hitter. Didn't wrap up well.

@ #9? No, thank you. Now if you talking a trade back scenario with, say, Cleveland? Perhaps.......
Prime said he didn't see any plug and play
#10* : 2/24/2015 7:34 pm : link
bona fide starters in this DB class. Which includes Trey and Collins.
bad
Phil in LA : 2/24/2015 7:36 pm : link
pick.
I wouldn't take Collins in the 2nd round let alone the 1st
Jay on the Island : 2/24/2015 7:37 pm : link
He is a physical presence against the run but he struggles in coverage. In today's NFL it is crucial to have safeties who can both play the run and cover. I know safety is a big need but that doesn't mean the Giants should reach for one.
Not at 9
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 2/24/2015 7:38 pm : link
...
Yeah I would take him
ghost718 : 2/24/2015 7:40 pm : link
And I would have that banner shot down currently flying over the Meadowlands,it says "Landon Collins can't cover".
No to Collins at 9 -- and is this a joke?

sjnyfan : 2/24/2015 8:23 pm : link
I would argue he isn't even a 1st rd pick. He can't cover and he's not as good of an in the box safety as some say. Very weak tackler
So his weaknesses are
lugnut : 2/24/2015 9:07 pm : link
"Not an isolation safety on a tight end or slot receiver", "Not a rangy safety", "Lacks versatility to play deep free safety", and most especially "Can get burned in man coverage"...and Mayock says he's valuable because on passing plays he can drop back and play man coverage. Alrighty then.
We already have enough safeties who can't cover
Giants2012 : 2/24/2015 9:21 pm : link
why add another?
Rather have Tartt in round 3
jeff57 : 2/24/2015 9:26 pm : link
.
That would be a terrible pick
Dave in PA : 2/24/2015 9:29 pm : link

And then your question about the safeties,
what do I value in Landon Collins I think was the
question, he reminds me a little bit of Deone
Bucannon last year who went late to Arizona. I
love the way Arizona used him, which was kind of
a strong safety in their base coverage, and then
dime linebacker in their nickel and dime, big
enough to take on a run but certainly quick and
athletic enough to cover running backs and tight
ends, and that's what I see with Landon Collins.

I don't think...
2ndroundKO : 2/24/2015 9:47 pm : link
he's a liability in coverage per se. He's made a lot of great plays playing man and zone. He's had some mishaps and one really bad game but so had everyone else on this planet. My only concern is whether the Alabama scheme has propped him up but he stands out like a prime Antrel Rolle did. Well sculpted, good hands, excellent tackler, big hits and all over the field. And that's why I think he'll be under serious consideration for the Giants.
Collins
stretch234 : 2/24/2015 9:53 pm : link
He is bad in coverage at the college level, which is only going to get magnified more in the NFL. If you are instinctive, you can get away with being slower. He seems slow and not very instinctive

The best S in a terrible draft for S does not make him worth the 9th pick
Isn't the 3-cone the Giants' favorite Combine drill?
Big Blue Blogger : 2/24/2015 9:55 pm : link
Collins was dead last on Monday. Might mean nothing, but still...
I should add that...
2ndroundKO : 2/24/2015 9:56 pm : link
the Giants need to add a FS in free agency. A starter because we have none. Not something you can find in the draft. And perhaps a smaller signing at S as well, depending on how much confidence they have in Cooper Taylor. Re-signing Rolle on the cheap would be nice. I think he can play centerfield. His speed has slowed but putting him back there allows enough for time for him to use his still excellent instincts to break on the ball. He was able to do that with Will Hill here. And Rolle would be a great teacher back there. Behre can play that Aztec role but he's a late rounder and I doubt the Giants expect him to start. Collins would be a nice addition.
Btw,
2ndroundKO : 2/24/2015 10:02 pm : link
Does anyone think there's a possibility he falls to round two?

Wont have any idea until after FA..
I'd take Shaq Thompson before Collins
Stupendamatic : 2/24/2015 10:12 pm : link
He'll be a beast on special teams out the gate that's for sure.

Yep true. I like him there if he falls. I think at #9 there are too many good players we'll have to choose from before pulling the trigger on Collins. But yeah, everybody's draft board is going to look vastly different after FA.
No.
Victor in CT : 2/25/2015 8:31 am : link
Hell no.
This Collins or Shelton at #9
Bob in Newburgh : 2/25/2015 9:04 am : link
You are kidding - right?
Either Collins, Shelton, any LB
JonC : 2/25/2015 9:08 am : link
very unlikely.
Jon: If Beasley projects as a true LB
Bob in Newburgh : 2/25/2015 9:15 am : link
In other words, can he play in reverse and in the open field, I could see them taking him.
No way.
Curtis in VA : 2/25/2015 9:17 am : link
This position will be addressed via FA. #9 is a spot for a stud, not a player with glaring weaknesses.
Bob
JonC : 2/25/2015 9:21 am : link
I suspect the only way they go "LB" is if they feel it's time to add a Beasley on the edge, to upgrade the speed and the ability to overload and create havoc. I believe there is some possibility this could happen, as NYG desperately needs an edge talent, and the speed and mobility factor is only going up while NYG hasn't kept up.

A Shaq type pick is very unlikely, for example. He's more likely a S in the NFL, and is really raw, has no true position defined yet.
Jon: Beasley projects as a beast as an edge rusher
Bob in Newburgh : 2/25/2015 10:34 am : link
but he probably has maxed out at his current 245.

If a 4-3 team feels he has no weaknesses, therefore a true 3-down LB I could easily see us taking him.

Remember the buzz about the Buffalo kid last year. This kid has the same combine numbers and a far higher level of competition success.
Bob, I do agree there's a lot to like about VB
JonC : 2/25/2015 10:40 am : link
but also noting it would be a paradigm shift for NYG, a team with coaches with relative lame duck status, etc.
if they draft him
feelflows : 2/25/2015 10:44 am : link
Shaq had to blowup the Combine with a freak performance...
Torrag : 2/25/2015 10:48 am : link
...to earn consideration in the Top 10. It didn't happen. He's a late first rounder imo.
Jon you 'stole' my defensive paradigm shift idea
Torrag : 2/25/2015 10:50 am : link
/plagiarism complaint lodged to Eric....ok borrowed ;]
lol, I gave a lot of thought to your point about Schoefield
JonC : 2/25/2015 10:54 am : link
I was told Mack was top 5 on their board a year ago, so there does appear to be some movement in the front office towards more AA on the edge, at least.

What gives me great pause is this regime has shown virtually no ability to scout and evaluate LBs accurately.
Very interesting factoid on Mack....great share
Torrag : 2/25/2015 11:00 am : link
Agree our LB scouting scares the crap out of me. IF Kennard proves out he'll be the first significant find since Jessie in the '93 draft and he would be an UDFA in today's system(I refuse to count Kiwanuka he should have stayed at DE-his best position). Just terrible.

I myself said I'd take Thompson over Collins, but neither in the 1st. I don't see Thompson lasting until 40 though. I could see a team like NE taking him for his versatility to play defense, offense, and special teams.
A number of scouts apparently feel
JonC : 2/25/2015 11:05 am : link
Shaq's best chance in the NFL is RB.

Thompson and Collins are both late 1st rounders for me
Torrag : 2/25/2015 11:15 am : link
As of right now all the size appropriate edge guys are on my #9 watchlist. I would pick Fowler/Ray/Beasley before any WR not named Cooper. Ray still needs to verify his AA at his pro day but I expect he will.
This is the pick
Randy in CT : 2/25/2015 11:33 am : link
of someone thinking need over value which is dopey at 9.
