Not really a $945K savings off cap though. Hillis' # in the Top 51 will get replaced by a minimum salary guy. So more a $500K save vs. cap
It saves 900+ in salary cap. Of course you will need to replace him, but that's the point. More salary cap for signing NEW players. Some of you are looking at it as if you own the team.
@ConorTOrr
Sad to see Hillis go. Was always realistic about the game, but could tell he wanted to hang on as long as possible, maybe another year in NY

This doesn't really make any sense. Yes, there's more money for signing new players, but there's also one more new player needed than if we kept him. So no, whether you're a fan or the owner of the team, it doesn't really save $900+ in salary cap.
he played hard and threw his body to gain more yards. Guy was tough but concussions arent to be played with. Glad we gave him a shot and he tried every time he was called in
it was this.....he showed what a RB who could catch passes could do for this offense....With Eli, our RB's have not been known to be targets that go out in pass patterns....they usually just get a dump off pass.....and as much as this offense changed last year, it still couldn't run a decent screen pass......but then again, look at what we had for linemen....
We have to help out our receivers by giving the defense another element to worry about in our passing game....a good receiving back will do that....

I thought the screen game was decent when Jennings was healthy. Granted, that was only for about 4-5 games, but he showed the ability to catch the ball and provided a couple of nice plays off of it. Would be GREAT to get a 3rd rb in here that had great hands and quicks so that we can further utilize the screen. Along with another lineman that can get downfield and make some blocks.
to get every possible inch he could out of a run. he seemed to know exactly when to cut to get the most yardage he could out of a play. good luck to him...

This is BBI dude, everybody here is an expert, owner, GM and agent.
Hillis was a dependable player altho he has definite limitations. He almost always made positive yardage, was an excellent pass catcher, and pass blocker. Good bye and good luck. No more concussions.
cutting him saves 945 off the cap period. what we do with that savings is something entirely different.
Using that logic if we sign Vereen for 2 million (just throwing a number out there) are we gonna say that cutting Hillis adds 1 million to the cap? Its two separate transactions.

Peyton Hillis said several times he believed the Giants represented his last chance to stick in the NFL. We'll see.

Peyton Hillis ran for 1,177 yards & 11 TDs in 2010.
He ran for 1,655 yards & 12 TDs in his 6 other NFL seasons.
It's a fleeting business.
who is already on the roster becomes the 51st player on the roster who was already there. Remember at this time of the season the top 51 players count against the cap. The Giants know longer pay Hillis and whoever becomes the 51st player now counts against the cap. When he was the 52 player he didn't count against the cap.

Peyton Hillis' release not a surprise. Comes days after Jerry Reese said #Giants had lot of "big bangers," would try to replace David Wilson
whether they look to FA (not sure who will really class as a burner when FA gets underway) or try to get a speed back in the draft.
Top "burners" in FA would seemingly be: Spiller and Vereen but they're probably out of the Giants range. Maybe a stop gap like Leon Washington on a 1-2 year deal, but I think they add a RB to the stable via the draft. FA (might have to select RB) - ( New Window )
RE: Hillis played a tough brand of football and was effective
He earned his money. That's all you can ask for. Wish him well and no ill effects from the concussion.
Agreed. To bad he wasn't a bit faster. He was tough as nails and had really good vision and instincts. Good luck to him and here's to hoping no long term ill effects from the concussions.
don't necessarily agree their price would exclude them for us. Neither guy is a feature back. Vereen is more effective catching the ball than running it. Spiller carries significant injury history. They might not be cheap but aren't break the bank types either.
A sleeper for me could be Roy Helu. He's been effective with limited touches and has good hands out of the backfield. Could be a 'bargain'. Not a lot of mileage on his wheels.

How about a third rounder's salary? Im sure we could save a buck or two by going that route and get younger and faster. I'm all for it.

I read somewhere Vereen was looking for ~$5M/year. No way the Giants are paying that.
Helu = Jennings. As extra depth he's fine, but I don't think he really adds much that they don't already have.
Backup RBs need to contribute in some way on specials. With that in Mind, and the weakness of the team there, there was no way Hillis was making the team.
shouldn't be that difficult to come by. you should be able to draft one in the low rounds, and season them. Cox, Scott, Brown, all washed out, and there was the unfortunate case of first rounder Wilson (but he wasn't drafted to be a 3rd/4th option). you really should only need one on a rare basis. Sadly, the Giants have heavily depended on the 3rd/4th RB for a long time.
Hillis was what you want, except that like almost all our RB's for a long time, he couldn't stay healthy. 1 mil is not a good price for a guy one hard hit away from season ending.
Will take his place and I have a suspicion that he'll surprise and actually contribute at some point. I think he's got some ability to stick and surprise. That's what she sadi.
I think he will complement Jennings and Brown well. Darkwa is solid depth also. I wouldn't really mind that too much as a 4 deep... there's not a true RB1, but they are all guys who can contribute in different situations.
Of course, I think spending a 3rd rd pick on a RB might be the best option out of all of them. But Rodgers has some potential IMO.
Giants will save $945,000 on their 2015 salary cap by releasing Peyton Hillis.

Agreed. Tough player, but it's time to quit.

No really as the replacement cost even at 1st year vet min is $420k so it's about a $500k savings.

He was super useful.
They really need to add another quality back in the draft.

If we want Duke we are gonna have to take him at 40 IMO

I was thinking he would be a solid addition. Should not be pricey. Still young and not a lot of mileage.
Orleans Darkwa I have above-average hope for. He just needs to show he can be a decent pass blocker and show good hands, he'll get a chance.
...well played, Sir!

Would rather spend the $5 million on another solid O-lineman and roll with the backs that we have.
