Brett Jones - Affect on FA and Draft

MotownGIANTS : 2/25/2015 12:32 pm
I dont watch much CFL football these days but the top rated OL in the whole CFL has to be pretty good I would imagine. I still agree with most that OL should be the main priority in te draft\FA but if we go OL in FA would it make since to go OL in rds 1 or 2 in the draft as well? Unless this guy is really not that good (CFL watchers please chime in). In all the projected OL depths no one has him penciled as a starter...why?

I would imagine he would allow us to go BPA in RD1 at least..regardless of position barring QB unless one of the franchise drop to 9 (which is highly unlikely).
Brett Jones has 0.0% affect on FA and draft.

From what I've read
pjcas18 : 2/25/2015 12:34 pm : link
he will have zero impact on the draft or free agency.

it's a depth signing at best, with potential, but I haven't read one beat writer or scout that thinks he's a 2015 starter.
Jones has a contract to come to camp
JonC : 2/25/2015 12:35 pm : link
nothing else is certain with him. He looks like a C, and probably a backup for now.

He has virtually zero impact on the #9 draft pick.
Because he's a center and we drafted a center last year
bigbluescot : 2/25/2015 12:35 pm : link
and Jones got a 3 year bare minimum contract with no guaranteed money. The Giants will be ecstatic if he works out to be good depth, and he'd be a Cruz like steal if he works to be anything more.

He's essentially a long shot project.

Top rated CFL lineman does not = NFL starter
njm : 2/25/2015 12:38 pm : link
I think the only effect his signing would have would be to eliminate the signing of any FA OC/OG who is not deemed to be starting material and eliminate drafting an OG/OC in the later rounds of the draft.

of the CFL, somehow an LB won their version of MVP last year (Solomon Elimimian), the first defensive player to win the award EVER if Wikipedia can be trusted. Sort of weird the NFL wouldn't come calling (even for a look).
Just another body to fight for a position

He's had a shot with 3 different NFL teams over the years. At 225 lbs. he may not have the size to play LB in the NFL.
it's like signing
giants#1 : 2/25/2015 1:01 pm : link
an undrafted rookie FA before the draft. Jones was eligible to be drafted 2 years ago (IIRC) and no one was interested.

his Wikipedia page, I am also surprised he didn't give the NFL another shot. He was a free agent after winning the league MVP. I'm sure there would have been a few teams willing to give him a look in camp. He could always go back to the CFL if it didn't work out and at 28 yeas old, this was probably his last shot.

People need to stop with the "it's a depth signing at best"
Dave in Buffalo : 2/25/2015 1:16 pm : link
He kicked a whole lot of ass in the CFL, and he's only 23. There's a lot of potential. He could very well turn out to be a strong starter for years to come.

At his age, dominating in his league, he's certainly the equivalent of a hight draft choice.

Elimimiam is the one who's 28.

Who knows if he can even make the team right now.
He is another guy

competing for a job. I think its way off to say he has no chance of being an NFL starter, but he is not going to make the Giants think that interior O Line is no longer a high priority in the draft.

54 more tackles than the next guy! I get that he's smaller than ideal (as noted by someone above) but surprised nobody gave a league MVP a look in camp.
Affect is a damned verb!
BlueLou : 2/25/2015 2:10 pm : link
Effect is a noun, clown.
Jones is a developmental
Jay on the Island : 2/25/2015 2:58 pm : link
interior lineman whose addition has no impact on the Giants draft plans. If they see an interior lineman that they like and he is the BPA at that spot then the Giants will select him. This is coming from someone who loved the Jones signing. The front office would be fools if they altered their draft plans due to the arrival of Jones because they honestly don't know what they have in Jones.
The Giants
DanMetroMan : 2/25/2015 3:00 pm : link
Likely value Jones as a 6th-UDFA with potential upside in terms of what they added
