NFT: Yanks Spring Training 2-25

What are the chances that Refsnyder makes the opening day squad?

Drew was never comfortable at the plate last year, do you think its reasonable that he can hit .250?
He's not going to make it unless someone gets hurt
Greg from LI : 2/25/2015 4:30 pm : link
Now, I think there's an excellent chance that Drew continues to suck and Refsnyder replaces him by June, but as far as making the team out of camp goes, Pirela's got a much better chance as a utility guy off the bench.
I doubt Refsnyder makes the roster...

he'd have to kill it this spring, and they're not going to keep him in the Bronx to play two days a week. If Didi really struggles, or Drew does, it's possible he's up by June 1, give or take. I think Pirela could end up being a utilityman in place of Ryan though, he's a better hitter and at this point probably more versatile in that he can spell Headley, even if his defense is not on Ryan's level (though Ryan is declining).
Or what Greg said

plus, unlike Ryan, Pirela might not be completely useless with a bat
Greg from LI : 2/25/2015 4:37 pm : link
If they don't come out strong in April and May, which seems unlikely, I hope they're bad enough that there's no pretense of winning this season so we can see some young guys get extended looks. I'd love to see guys like Refsnyder and Austin push their way onto the roster.
He should start
RetroJint : 2/25/2015 4:46 pm : link
Drew can be the primary back up. The Yankees are picked to finish last in their division by quite a few people. That can be liberating. He hit well at Scranton so returning to Scranton is redundant. Playing down never helps a prospect.
Personally, I think he should be given a shot to win the job
Matt M. : 2/25/2015 7:36 pm : link
I know that won't be the reality and the Drew will be the 2B on Opening Day. But, unless Refsnyder and Pirela both suck this Spring, it shouldn't be.
Hal aghast at the cheap charge..

A fair explanation that still translates as "We overspent on old players past their prime and now we have to pinch pennies with future superstars."

I think Drew is going to win the 2B job and I have a hunch he will own it all year. The talent is there. I think Pirela makes a great reserve and RR can season in AAA until ARod is put on IR with some undisclosed injury.
Something could shake out that sees Refsnyder in the Bronx...

Didi could struggle and Drew could slide in there, Drew could (and likely will) struggle, someone could get injured. But for now that seems like what is likely to happen. Get rid of Ryan though, much rather see Pirela get MLB reps.

Always nice when you can make up numbers like a 235 mil payroll to serve your own purpose. Payroll is at $219 mil for this season; 10 mil less than 2013 and just 10 mil more than the 2005 payroll. MLB revenue, however, has increased from 5.6 billion a year to 9 billion a year between 2005 to 2013. The Dodgers in that same time-span have seen their payroll explode from 83 mil to 268 mil. Hal brought this on himself by being the first one to mention money. The owner starts talking about payroll and budgets, and then all the sudden the gloss over the fan bases eyes on high ticket prices; draconian polices on ticket resale, and every method a college marketing class could come up with to create an artificial spike in ticket sales starts being noticed.

I hate to say it but, he makes a lot of sense and, points to the validity of the current owners not giving two shits about the future of this team.

Please Hal, sell the fucking team to Mark Cuban.

A-Rod's last two rounds of BP were legitimately impressive. Thought Bird and Teixeira stood out in this group though. Just BP. Means little.

Good piece on how much Hal sucks...

and how the 2014 Yankees are not particularly similar to the 2000 Yankees, or the rest of the teams from that run, because they are not using their spending advantage.

Stay out of the stadium
arniefez : 2/26/2015 4:18 pm : link
and turn off the TV. That's the only way it will change. The 2015 Yankees star-free and deadly dull to watch! I can hear shill Kay tagging that right now.
IFA bonus pools for 7/2/15 announced...
Dunedin81 : 2/26/2015 7:44 pm : link
Yanks with $2,262,800. Can't use more than $300K on any individual player but can trade individual slots (up to 1/2 of their total bonus pool, I believe).

Comment From Pat
NYY knee jerk signing Olivera / Ibanez?

11:03
Kiley McDaniel: Wouldn’t shock me on either one, but haven’t heard them with Olivera and hearing other teams more on Ibanez, though there isn’t a ton of buzz on Ibanez in general.

11:06
Kiley McDaniel: NYY really flubbed the Moncada process. Almost all of what’s been reported is accurate, including many of the “characterizations” along with a couple other things I may reveal next week that I’ve uncovered, some of which is embarrassing for NYY.

11:08
Kiley McDaniel: It sounds like NYY genuinely didn’t think Moncada was worth what BOS paid, but they approached it the wrong way and there’s one bigger question they can’t/likely won’t answer.

How are a bunch of 16 year olds are worth $34 million but the best 19 year old in the world is worth exactly $50 million but not $60 million? It’s a ridiculous line in the sand to draw and there are some multi-year, overarching trends in what NYY has been doing that should’ve made this easier to see coming.

George Steinbrenner would’ve never let this happen and there’s more than just undertones of the PIT/Miguel Sano fiasco with NYY/Moncada. Teams that are run well and efficiently with clear delineations of who is in charge aren’t scared they might overpay relative to the 2nd highest bid if they think the price/player line up with their internal values.

Comment From The Bronx Empire
Weigh in for us…did New York just make a miscalculation on Moncada’s market? Surely they didn’t buck at upping their offer when they heard they were short by a few million. Or were they even given a chance to up their offer?

11:35
Kiley McDaniel: They had a shot and didn’t take it. I think some of it was the agent, who they hadn’t dealt with before and it seems like they thought he was fabricating offers and trying to make a name for himself. How dumb would it be to not give them a chance to top any offer? No one is that stupid.

Sounds like a combination of top scouts and ownership said $25M was enough, either because they thought it would be the best offer or Moncada would take it anyway because Cano is his favorite player. It’s more complicated than just misgauging the market value of the player, though.
