NFT: Going to sporting event alone

DaddyM89 : 2/25/2015 11:47 pm
yay or nay??
Been to some minor league baseball games alone
Jints in Carolina : 2/25/2015 11:53 pm : link
and to a few Canes hockey games.

I don't think it's a big deal. I wind up talking to people around me.
I would imagine
dancing blue bear : 2/25/2015 11:55 pm : link
there would be some people there. unless the sport takes place in the "champagne room"

seriously... hell yeah. movies, concerts, sporting events, vacation, dinner. Just roll. I, sometimes, prefer going lone wolf. Zero compromise. I go to concerts alot. I'm getting older and alot of my friends just don't go out much. don't go to shows, whatever. It's similar in that you're already among a group of like minded people. You are there with them
Hell yeah.
Crispino : 2/26/2015 12:03 am : link
I have no problem doing that. Much rather do golf tournaments alone. Moving around where I want when I want without consulting anyone else. Grab a beer and go. I've gone to other stuff like the Big East Tournament alone too. Easier to find a good ticket as a single. Football games are where I don't go alone. Much more fun as a group experience.
It's obviously fun
Stufftherun : 2/26/2015 12:06 am : link
when in the company of a friend or friends, comraderie and all, but if it's important enough to you to be there, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's not like sitting in the corner of a restaurant all by yourself in fact you'll almost certainly bond with those around you.

For whatever it's worth, I made the trip to Indianapolis alone to see Super Bowl 46 but then again I made that decision the morning of the game without a ticket in hand.
I do it all the time
soda man : 2/26/2015 12:12 am : link
big surprise right? Durr!

Anyway, yeah, I go to plenty of games alone. as a matter of fact, I haven't been to a game with anyone in a while. I just haven't met anyone that is into going to games and now that I am into going to away games every year, everyone has become useless.

Well, I did go to the Jacksonville game with my friend and that game pissed me off so much that I would like to erase that trash garbage pussy bullshit from my memory because did the Giants really blow a 21-0 lead to the fucking ass-juice Jaguars?? So, that game doesn't count. and my friend made me pay half the Wal-Mart bill in a sneaky way so fuck that Florida Warrior.

I'm also at the age where some of my loser friends are having kids and all of that boring shit and "money is tight"... Then again, I don't think that they like me very much so, since they'll find money for dumb shit like WWE Royal Rumble and Fall Out Boy concerts. They know better that I don't even want to bother with horrible shit like that.

Keep in mind, you're going to games to watch the games, not the asshole next to you, yes, that includes you cousin CJ and annoying dad. They're useless. I put the Giants, Yankees, Rangers, and Jazz all above my family, because well, they suck. hallelujah! A fucking Men.
No problem with it at all
MookGiants : 2/26/2015 12:13 am : link
especially if you're going to a game where your favorite team is the home team, very easy to find people to talk to in that case. Even at an away game if you arent an ass you can be friendly with the people around you and never care that you went alone.
You shouldn't have a problem..
Chris in Philly : 2/26/2015 12:25 am : link
going to any event alone. Nobody cares...
If you go to a game by yourself
soda man : 2/26/2015 12:26 am : link
who is going to know you went alone?

I would stop by Shea, especially a day game, and see tons of single guys with their walkman radios going into the stadium alone. Honestly, i f'ing loved it. Had my ear phones on and off listening to the game and doing my own thing. I likely would never do it for a football or hockey game yet i enjoyed it for baseball (especially a day game playing hookie from work).
haha thanks guys
DaddyM89 : 2/26/2015 12:37 am : link
was originally supposed to go to rangers game with the mrs tomorrow, she bailed and now I think I will man up and go lone wolf. Don't have another day off after tomorrow for a week so I want to enjoy it.
You'll enjoy it if you want to
Sneakers O'toole : 2/26/2015 12:49 am : link
I've gone to sports alone, or in situations where our tickets were split up where we sat alone. Both are fine, as long as it's a sport and a team you're invested in (at least speaking for myself). I could watch an entire season of Giants homegames by myself at the stadium and be happy. Hell, the worse alternative is bringing the wrong kind of friend or whatever that detract from it.
I go to boxing events alone all the time
MiamiHurricaneFan : 2/26/2015 1:14 am : link
MSG oor barclays...no one cares I'm a grown man....and normally the guy next to me wants to talk about boxing...
I've never had a problem going to a movie alone
Milton : 2/26/2015 5:31 am : link
But for sporting events, if I'm not with someone I know, I'd just as soon watch it on TV.

p.s.-- But the question brings back a memory, albeit a mostly sad one! When I was 13 years old I had one ticket to a charity basketball event at my high school gym which featured several players from the New York Jets taking on several teachers from my high school (that's right, professional football players versus high school teachers in a game of hoops).

It was depressing being there by myself. And what made it worse was that the very next day I was scheduled to wrestle in my junior high school's finals and the guy I was going up against was there. He and his friends spotted me and started in with the trash talk. I have to admit to being intimidated, but the following day I kicked his ass (10-4, if I remember correctly).
If you have to ask
Upstate_Giants_fan : 2/26/2015 5:40 am : link
you may not be ready to go by yourself ;)
No problem going to a movie, sporting event, bar,
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 2/26/2015 6:23 am : link
etc. alone.

Are you that insecure?

That is an amazing story. I deal with trash talk everyday of my life (go figure) but I love that one, ONE part of life where you end all the trash talking with no effort, just a flick of a wrist and you're on your back crying.

Also, I still believe they do that teacher vs. pros thing to do this day. At least they did when I was in high school and that was in 2000-ish. But it was the Washington generals or something vs the shithead facility of the school. They would play for real I think but they would award the teachers 50 points for crowd noise or something horrible.

It was so God awful and I was never even close to showing up. I always wanted my Photoshop teacher to split his head open on the court and receive 8-10 stitches because he slid into the benches. My English teacher too, but she was useless and was no lie, like 360 pounds. I don't think anybody liked her though and I hate the movie Dead Poet's Society profoundly because of her.
Depends on the sport
MetsAreBack : 2/26/2015 8:05 am : link
I cant go to a football game alone - its too much of an all-day event, and my favorite part is the tail-gate so if alone... why bother.

But hockey or baseball? Hell yeah, and frankly I'd rather not pay for the 2nd seat when that person doesnt really want to be there anyway... or is just going to make fun of MAB's intensity over a professional sport.

I could understand milton as a 13 year old being a little self-concious. But as an adult - i would hope you wouldnt give a fuck what other people in your section might think. And the TV experience is fine... but there's nothing like the home team scoring a goal or hitting a home run in a big game at the arena/field.... electricity, etc
I travel quite a bit
Mike from Ohio : 2/26/2015 8:42 am : link
and love going to games in other cities when I am there overnight. Its fun to check out the arenas, enjoy the atmosphere and watch a game when you aren't really invested in who wins. And as others have said, you usually make small talk with some folks around you.

Surprised someone would feel uncomfortable doing that. Are you worried a bunch of people you have never met, nor will ever see again, may think you have no friends? Seems odd.
generally no but...
Mike in St. Louis : 2/26/2015 8:45 am : link
in October 1982, someone at work offered me a single ticket to that night's 7th game of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Brewers...she had gotten an invitation to sit in a box so I was going to have to sit alone...she actually had a little trouble getting someone to take the ticket since it was game day and a single seat but I couldn't pass up a chance to go to the 7th game of a WS...
I don't mind it one bit
Vin R : 2/26/2015 8:51 am : link
It's a nice change up having me time and getting away from it all for one day or night. Enjoy yourself!
I'd rather go
Metnut : 2/26/2015 9:11 am : link
with a group of friends, but I don't mind going by myself if I'm really in the mood to go and I can't round anyone up.

You can sometimes get a really good seat on stubhub for a discounted price if you go solo.
there's only one activity I don't like doing alone
fkap : 2/26/2015 9:17 am : link
going to dinner at a restaurant. (Maybe masturbating, if it's in a crowd. Alone, like dining, no problem.)

anything else, there are lot of things I prefer to do with someone else, but I can't think of anything that is uncomfortable to do alone.

Unless you're sitting in enemy territory, you should be sitting amongst comrades in arms.
Yea

I prefer going alone, no BS and complete autonomy

There are drawbacks
Marty in Albany : 2/26/2015 11:16 am : link
1. You don't have anyone to discuss the plays and strategy with, or high-five after a good play.

2. You don't have anyone to watch your coat or other stuff when you get up to buy a beer or take a leak.

3. When you do come back to your seat you have to find your ticket stub again to remind you where your seat is, you can't just look to see where your companion is sitting.

4. If you get drunk, there is nobody to drive you home, assuming you can remember where you left your car.

On the plus side:

If you already have a ticket, it is better than sitting by yourself in a hotel room or watching bad TV at home.
I went to the last Friday night game at Old Yankee Stadium
schnitzie : 2/26/2015 11:23 am : link
The tix were available on StubHub last minute, field level, right behind Home Plate. I splurged, and it was too late to get anyone to join me.

I got there in time for batting practice, and just as I discovered where my seat was and started doing a little happy dance, I looked up and saw Derek Jeter looking straight at me, clearly amused by this little lady in her Mo jersey and Yankee cap, with a HUGE clear plastic carrying bag containing a small version of my house (TY George Carlin) and doing a little happy dance about her amazing seat.

I looked back at Jeter, put my hand on my heart and double-pointer-finger vibed him: "Yooooooooooouuuuuu!"

Spent the rest of the evening schmoozing with other fans sitting around me and watching a great game.

It is one of my most favorite moments at that stadium, and I would have missed it if I'd had a thing about going anywhere alone. Besides, I wasn't alone. I was there with the Yankees. =:-)

Slow Thursday in August with a Giants preseason game at Giants Stadium. No tickets. Leave the office a little early, drive to the stadium and buy from a "scalper" for $20. Go by myself? Hell yes.
Nay for me

isn't an accurate description of schnitzie's bag that she brings into games.

The damn thing could fit a small manhattan apartment in it.
