Simeon Rice takes shots at Michael Strahan

Headhunter : 2/26/2015 10:55 am
"I didn't have nobody falling down to help me get sacks. I didn't have that. I had to earn everything I got."

"I know you had a guy here [in New York]. He was not seeing me. Nobody was. When I played, I set the standard. I ushered into the Javon Kearses, I ushered in the Jason Taylors."

"I dominated when I played. There was nobody better at my position. Nobody."

"I like Michael Strahan as a person but I could care less if he's in the Hall of Fame or not."

"You had a guy here that went with four sacks [that made the Pro Bowl]. Four!"

Sounds like he wants some love.
And Osi was better against the run than Simeon Rice.
FStubbs : 2/26/2015 11:02 am : link
One dimensional player who's jealous that people have forgotten about him. Nothing to see here.
Oh, and on the topic of Kearse
FStubbs : 2/26/2015 11:03 am : link
Rice had the better career but at his peak, Kearse was more fearsome. Oh, and Kearse was better against the run.
hmph..
LakeGeorgeGiant : 2/26/2015 11:04 am : link
I detect a bit of jealousy. People like to harp on Favre giving Strahan that sack but without that sack Strahan would still have 21.5 sacks that season which is I believe still 5 better than Rice's best season.

Rice never led the league in sacks even once.

Awesome player, outstanding career.. but there must have been something in the Tampa water to make these idiots say such stupid fucking nonsense about Strahan.
LMAO this whole Rice/Sapp thing is so weird
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 2/26/2015 11:04 am : link
Strahan was CLEARLY better than Rice because he was a dominant run defender whereas Rice was mediocre. And Strahan was a beast of a pass rusher too.

So much jealousy.
Simeon Rice was an elite DE for a decade...

In the 1996 NFL draft, Simeon Rice was selected third overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He was selected after Keyshawn Johnson and Kevin Hardy. After a contract dispute that lasted through training camp, Rice signed a 4-year, $9.5 million deal.

Rice was a great pass rusher, didn't play the run at all as I recall
Eric on Li : 2/26/2015 11:09 am : link
better and more durable version of Osi, but Strahan still a better overall player based on his ability to play both the run & pass.
I couldn't stand the Bucs team from that era.
Mr. Bungle : 2/26/2015 11:10 am : link
Hated Sapp. Hated Keyshawn. Reidel Anthony was a scrub, but acted like a hot dog. Rice was (and still is) a whiner. Lynch was a dirty safety. I hated how the media overrated Alstott. Hell, I hated Grammatica -- when do you hate a kicker?!
It's jealousy and sour grapes, but

Stu11 : 2/26/2015 11:12 am : link
vs the Eagles. Strahan literally rendered the Eagles offense useless that day almost singlehandedly and that was against a pro bowl tackle in Runyan(aka Strahan's bitch). The next time Rice does that in any game of meaning will be the first.
Putting Strahan aside
Deej : 2/26/2015 11:14 am : link
Rice still wasnt the best at his position when he played. I always thought Robert Porcher was a better DE. Less of a sack artist, but a plus-plus run defender unlike Rice. Jason Taylor was a similar player to Rice, and was more productive. There were also a lot of guys who overlapped with Rice either at the beginning or end of his career who were his equal or better.

It sounds like the old Buccs DLs are really obsessed with Strahan. Truth is that Rice was an exceptional pass rusher and shitty against the run. He was on an amazingly stacked defense, and the guy next to him, Sapp, commanded a double team on every play. So unlike all the ends Rice thinks he's better than, Rice was usually going 1-on-1 against a tackle. And unlike Strahan, Rice did it from the blind side.

I think it's that in combination with the "fairy tale" end to his career. Went out on top with a championship, hall of fame, then add in the fame/fortune that has him plastered everywhere.

I wanted Ogden. But I definitely felt like we had pick 5 in a 4 player draft (Keyshawn, Hardy, Rice, Ogden), and then got teased when there was talk that someone would take Phillips top 4.

The following year I felt like we had the 7 pick in a 6 player draft (Pace, Russell, Springs, Boulware, Westbrook, Jones).
I love how Favre taking a dive is a bad thing.
Geomon : 2/26/2015 11:27 am : link

unless he is talking about Michael Strahan. Same goes for that dickhead Warren Sapp. Rice is obviously using Strahan to get his name out there and spark discussion about him being in the HOF. Too bad his performance over a football career wasn't enough to do that.

I wonder how long a class act like Derrick Brooks shakes his head at clowns like this and Sapp before he smiles and gives them a pass because of everything they went through as brothers on some great Teams.
Laughable
NYGmen58 : 2/26/2015 11:55 am : link
Rice was a great pass rusher and one of the games best during his career but that was all he was.

He also benefitted from Sapp getting double-teamed during his time in Tampa.

Strahan also has about 300 more tackles than Rice in his career. Joke of a comparison.

Right? If Simeon Rice wasn't such an asshole, then maybe someone would have fallen down for him too. He just hating on Mike cause Mike has people skills. Not for nothing, getting Favre to take a dive is a feat in and of itself.People like Mike. They like to have their morning coffee and listen to him and look at his face. Rice and Sapp are the very definition of haters, jealous ones at that.

If I remember correctly (probably a 50-50 shot), the conventional wisdom had Baltimore taking Phillips, which obviously would've dropped Ogden to the Giants.

I believe I read that one reason they didn't take him was that Art Modell's wife didn't like the Phillips' off field issues with his ex-girlfriend.

When you're at the top, people take shots

Goal is always take shots at the guy ahead of you so you can sucker him into responding, and therefore gain more attention than you deserve.

He was a strictly one-dimensional player; a very good pass rusher, but nowhere near Strahan's level at either pass rushing or, especially, playing the run. He's too one-dimensional to call him a great player. Very good, not ever "great."

Strahan has been retired since 2007, let it go man.

Rice was a great pass rusher but a terrible run defender. I recall rumblings that scouts laughed out loud when watching his run defense tape from college.

Did Favre give Strahan that sack, sure, but who cares. Strahan was a dominant two way DE in his era and picked up the mantle from Reggie White. (Not that he was White's equal, he wasn't) Rice could never dominate a game like Strahan did. Furthermore, Strahan was probably held more than any other DE in his era. I recall the Giants sending tapes to the league office depicting all the ways Strahan was being held play after play.

"Who the hell is Simeon Rice?"

Dunedin81 : 2/26/2015 3:08 pm : link
Player A: 174 GP, 161 GS, 122 sacks, 5 INTs, 28 FFs, 389 tackles, 3 Pro Bowls, 1 All Pro

Player B: 161 GP, 102 GS, 85 sacks, 1 INT, 35 FF, 5 defensive TDs, 2 Pro Bowls, 1 All Pro

Player A comes across as the better player, even acknowledging how often Player B was hurt, but it's not that big a gap. And nobody thinks of Osi Umeniyora as a sure-thing HOFer, much less a first ballot guy.

giantgiantfan : 2/26/2015 7:36 pm : link
he definitely was more consistent in getting 10 or more sacks per year than Strahan, but thats it. Strahan has more career sacks (longevity) and holds the record for most sacks in a season. Rice's beast season was 16.5, Strahan bested that twice with 18.5 and 22.5.

Only thing Rice has on Strahan is he averaged more sacks per season (by 2), party because he was consistent at getting 10+ sacks a year and partly because he played 4 less seasons.

Okay Simeon, bye now.
Did Favre lay down for Strahan?
giantgiantfan : 2/26/2015 7:42 pm : link
I'm not so sure he did, but it doesn't matter anyways its counted as a sack. However, looks like Michael is in the backfield damn face and Favre doesnt have many choices other than take a big hit or throw the ball away really really fast.

Then again I can't tell the context of the game from that and Favre seems to smile afterwards.

AnishPatel : 2/26/2015 7:55 pm : link
was a 2 way DE, who got his sacks AND played the run. Rice was a great pass rusher, but sucked at as a 2 way DE.
Strahan has 659 tackles while rice has 389.. That's fucking terrible if you are going to rip a fucking HOFer.

45 total tackles for Rice in a season vs Strahans 61. Trent cole is a 2 way TE, as well as JPP. This is why Idon't respect Freeny. 30 something tackles as a career high? That's fucking god awful. Rice isn't in the same league as Strahan. If you are going to talk shit about a guy at least have more Sacks AND total tackles then the guy.If not, shut the fuck up. i wish Strahan would just rip these guys a new asshole.
Simeon Rice was such a transcendent talent......
Bluenatic : 2/26/2015 8:24 pm : link
...... that he spent his last professional season amassing all of 5.5 tackles and 1 sack for the UFL's New York Sentinels.
Anybody judging Strahan's entire career based on the Favre sack
Matt M. : 2/26/2015 8:32 pm : link
is a moron. If you want to question the sack record, that's fine. But, for the entire body of his career, Strahan was the 2nd best DE in football during my lifetime. The only player I've seen at the position was Reggie White. This is one case where I really don't think I am being biased as a Giants fan.

Fuck the fall down. Strahan was held so often they actually stopped calling it. Had his "blatant" holds been called, he'd would have had at LEAST 10 more sacks that year. He literally couldn't be stopped. I saw every game.
