NFT: That "I am Pilgrim" book some folks were talking about

santacruzom : 2/26/2015 7:53 pm
Pretty, pretty good...

I picked it up prior to my vacation and started reading it on the plane. At first I was skeptical... I didn't quite care for the writing style and felt like it might dive into Dan Brown depths of clumsy exposition and pseudo noir. But very quickly I was immersed and really grew to appreciate some of the author's style and tricks.

Since he's a screenwriter I can easily imagine him hoping to make a movie out of it, but I think that would be a mistake. A book like this needs a miniseries at least, and it would have the potential to be an awesome one.
B in ALB I think you'll back me up

I was the first to recommend I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. I posted it months ago on a book recommendation thread. Terry Hayes is/was a screenwriter and is not a youngster who hit a home run IMO with this book. His second book which is called Year of the Locust is due out in June or September and can be pre ordered on Amazon.
honestly, it's one of my favorites of all time

And Spy/thrillers is my favorite genre.

Another one I just read is Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews. The first in a series. Excellent as well. Highly, highly recommended again.

IM finishing up Alex Berenson's stuff now. It's a step below the other two I mentioned but still entertaining.
I started Red Sparrow on your recommendation

I got about 1/3 of the way in and I got be honest, I wasn't loving it. No spoilers but I lost interest

It drags for a short spell but it evolves. Stick with it. The final third is really good.
I'll go back to it

and finish it one day. It just feels that it's telegraphing what comes next
I'm about 2/3 thru Pilgrim

It hit a dry spot for me about 25% of the way in, the stuff that featured the bad guy, but it came back to the protagonist and I'm enjoying it again. Best ever? I've still got some fond memories of Ludlum and Patterson.

To each his own Billy. Glad you're enjoying the book. Ludlum is fun too. No complaints there.

It's so good I can hardly put it down.

Some of the timeline confuses me, but it doesn't really matter. The book is great.
yep, I swallowed that book

In huge chunks. I'd read of "lulls" on other threads about it but I didn't notice any. It was riveting in its entirety, and when I wasn't reading it, I was wishing I was reading it.
It really is the kind of book that if you get someone to read it

Who's going to star in the movie

recommendation for Robert Wilson's "A Small Murder In Lisbon"

Not as much a spy thriller, but still a great, suspenseful, historical-ish mystery.
I felt

the author took more time than usual developing each and every character. As a result, up until about chapter 24 I felt totally disconnected from the murder that the book began with.

Even though I read it on Kindle, I felt the need to go back and see if I had missed something. However, as he began to tie the characters together in the plot, I found the book creative and interesting.

It is definitely a book I would recommend for fans of espionage.
