Seriously. What color do you see? This simple question has put the citizens of the world world at odds with each other. Marriages have broken up. Wars have been declared. Utter chaos. Link - ( New Window )
I clearly see white and gold and thought this was some weird bullshit where different people get a different picture on their computer. I just showed my girlfriend next to me and she says she sees blue and black.
As I'm typing this I was scrolling down on the picture it turned blue and black and then right back to white and gold.
It's a low resolution photo and the dress is back-lit.. meaning, the light is behind the dress and not on the part you're seeing. So the white looks dim and discolored.

No way. That's not the same dress. That dress is much darker. It's purple and black.

No white or black, to my eyes. And to me it's the same every time. I suppose there might be a lighting effect. Perhaps in different light the colors would be different, but it is interesting that others see it differently.
The explanation is in the wired article but don't let me stop you from pounding your chest and waving your dick around.. You're right, you're smarter than the rest of us and you see it the right way.
The far left picture at the top is the actual color of the dress if it's front-lit.
In the original picture, the bright light is behind it so it's shadowed and appears darker and is triggering people to see it that way.
Really not that difficult.
Lay a white t shirt in front of you under a light and then take the shirt and hold it in FRONT of the light so that the light is behind the shirt and is blocking your view of the light itself. The side of the shirt you see will appear darker and somewhere in the vicinity of the tint you see in the picture because it's shadowed and the light is the other side.
For the record... THIS is the color black. Which is not anywhere on that dress.
When I opened it on my wife's iphone yesterday it was blue and black. When I opened it on this thread today it was white and gold. It's got to be some kind of thing that sometimes causes the color to invert on the image...
I've seen it on my phone and 2 different computers and it looks the same every time.
Just so I'm understanding this right.. people who are saying it's blue, you're saying the color of the dress in that picture above is the same color of a home Giants jersey? And if you put them side by side, you'd see the same color?

Fighting the good fight, lol.
Looks the same to me every time- gold and white, on a phone and two different monitors.
What's interesting is the expressions of shock and amazement. It's like people have never seen an optical illusion before.

Haha, I'm more amazed at how people are "debating" it. I totally understand finding it cool how two people can look at the same picture and see different things. I personally find it cool for sure.
But what the hell is there to debate? Whether or not it is blue and black or white and gold, clearly no matter what, someone is experiencing an optical illusion and (I guess until recently) there was no way to know who is right and wrong. So I don't get why people were passionately defending what they saw. Just enjoy the fun part.

LOL, yeah... it's pretty funny. I'm honestly just trying to figure out where people are seeing black.
From the mouth of the woman, who originally posted the picture.
Quote:
Two women are behind the viral dress that has everyone confused. Here's what they told us.
The picture was initially posted on Tumblr by a 21-year-old singer named Caitlin McNeill who lives on the tiny Scottish island of Colonsay.
In a telephone conversation with Business Insider on Thursday evening, McNeill explained that the dress in the picture was worn to her friends' wedding. Some people see the dress as it appears in the photo as white and gold, while others see it as blue and black.
The dress was worn by the bride's mother. McNeill and her friends first realized something was different about the dress when the mother sent her daughter the now-famous photo.
Quote:
"I got to the wedding and the mother was wearing the dress," McNeill said. "Obviously it was blue and black."

Below link that explains it. Overexposed and white balance is off. It seems different colors to me depending on feed. Black and Blue dress - ( New Window )
THAT is blue and black. But there's no way it's the same one. The picture even shows that it comes in different colors. The original one is not those colors.
Manipulated and I'm seeing one thing, and my wife sees another. It has switched colors for both of us, but not at the same time. We now see it differently at the same time when it was the same last night. Pretty cool. I thought my daughter had cracked the case with the color inversion or negative view on her phone, but apparently not.
The real color of the dress is black and blue. The only question is what color does the dress look TO YOU in the picture. There is no right or wrong answer. I saw nothing but pale gold and white all day. Now, I see pale gold and pale blue. It's quite a phenom!
This means that this effect can be recreated. Soon there will be movies with scenes that people see in different colors. :)
2. who gives a fuck, why it's all over the damned place.... i dunno it's too stupid.
3. its a bad picture.
4. the internet has wasted too much time on this ugly dress and the Kardashians.
Every time I've seen this stupid picture, it's looked white and gold. This time, when I opened the thread, I saw completely different colors. Now, the same picture clearly is blue and dark brown. Odd.

I can understand it when people say blue if they mean a reallllly light sky blue type color (I see that, too.. but I perceive it as actually being white just in bad lighting)
And brown makes sense, too.. it's a shitty gold color. Close enough.
But the "actual" dress (according to the picture on the website) is like.. Giants or Rangers blue and BLACK. People see those colors when they look at the original picture? I literally see the same thing every single time. It hasn't changed once.
I'm looking at the picture, and it's medium blue and chocolate brown, and it didn't look remotely like that the first dozen or so times I saw it. I mean, it literally looks like a completely different dress now.

I can SORT of see that.. like I said, I get where the blue and brown come from, in actuality that's what it looks like.. but my eyes are just telling me it's shitty backlit white/gold. But where the hell are people seeing black in that picture? I don't see anything even close.
I have absolutely no idea where people are seeing black on the dress.
In the website picture of the alleged dress, it's clearly blue/black beyond a shadow a doubt. But in the original picture I do not see a hint of black anywhere.
here is the dress in a properly lighted store window (per NYT):
That's special I guess?
Yes. This is a cancer test
Lulz
As I'm typing this I was scrolling down on the picture it turned blue and black and then right back to white and gold.
This is cray cray.
What the fuck is wrong with people?
I see light blue and shit-gold
It's white, nonetheless.

Yup. Who comes up with this crap?
I see light blue and shit-gold
^^^ this is the correct answer. However, the dress appears blue in the crappy picture.
Once this is resolved, there will be world peace.
If the light were on the other side, the white would be illuminated and look brighter.
I can't believe this is a "thing" or even worse, that people are somehow seeing BLACK.
In the original picture, the bright light is behind it so it's shadowed and appears darker and is triggering people to see it that way.

having said that, I still see think it's blue and brown.
Two points..
1. I can't believe we are even arguing about this
2. I shouldn't post when I first wake up in the morning.
Cheers
Seriously, is this what we need to argue about now?
I miss football.
Yesterday when I first saw it it was white and gold.
Now whenever I look at it, it's blue and black.
The only consistent thing is that it is fucking ugly.

No, a lighter shade. Definitely not giants blue.

One said white and gold, the other said blue and black. Both were definitive. Nuts. I see white and gold.

That was done specifically to ruffle the panties of the oversensitive type. Like.. you, for example!
Glad to see it worked.
