Jackson called russell a nice prospect and good looking kid but since he is still in college and a draft ineligible player at the moment he is in line for a fine...

Yahoo Sources: NBA investigating Phil Jackson's public comments on draft-ineligible guard, fine looms
Is this a serious post? A NBA executive is commenting on a collegiate player who hasn't even declared for the draft. Jackson doesn't seem to know much about how to run a team.
No. It's the first thing I hear all GMs say when asked to comment on a college player during the college season. His other moves this past year just back up the point.
"Well I hit da fuckin ball with the bat and da fuckin guy..."

Sounds more like Boom Boom Geoffrion
@Sam_Vecenie Sam, any precedent to a guy of Okafor's current defense improving to even average or close? Thanks.

@WexlerRules think Cousins is a good example. Hes fine on D now.
The fact that towns has improved as the season has gone on is a very good sign on what kind of prospect he is..
In fairness, (and I'm open to whomever they deem #1) he's just saying since he's the entire offense it's hard to be 100% effort on defense. That's true of every player. Only so much energy a guy has.
Okafor can't even stay on the floor in late game defensive situations, they take him off for Amile Jefferson
Phil Jackson is here for UK practice.
So i guess Isola was wrong about Jackson recruiting..shocker

A franchise player almost has to be a 2 way player that is at least a decent defender. I'm leaning Russel and Towns over Okafor at this point.

Towns will be considered the number 1 pick and this is coming from someone who love Okafor and hated Towns becuase i didnt want a project on this team...

Not every franchise playre is a 2 way player...
Multiple teams complained to NBA regarding Phil Jackson's comments about D'Angelo Russell. They are investigating, as Yahoo! 1st reported.
All because he said he is a nice looking player? what is the harm in that?
Perhaps what I see as a franchise player is different. Kevin Love for example. He may score alot and rebound but he also gives up alot on the other end.
I mean how is a guy a 'franchise' player if he score 25 but routinely gives up roughly 20 on the other end? Those players generally don't win you championships without covering up their decencies in some way.
Franchise to me are the Shaqs,Duncans,Kobes,Jordans,LeBron's of the world. Guys who are excellent on both sides of the floor. I'd even strectch it to a Melo for sake of argument as he can at least play some defense.

Phil Jackson knows about good looking players. He coached Rick Fox for goodness sakes. He could have been talking about how hansom Russell was
Funny thing is thanks to the era he played in nobody talks about Mutombo, however if he were available now he would be BY FAR the consensus #1 pick and it wouldn't even be close.
As for franchise players the guys Mason lists are like greatest of all time. You cant expect every number 1 pick to be a Shaq, Duncan, kobe, lebron, etc...
A franchise player has to be at least a great offensive player and a borderline avg defender. Very few players these days are elite offensive and defensive players. Lebron, Davis (not really elite offense), ???

Flip side is Mutombo put up the numbers he did vs. great centers. 12 and 12 with 3.4 blocks for a decade.

lol
Well said. It's usually a two-way player but there are exceptions especially when someone is a gamechanger in one aspect of the game like Mutombo was.
FWIW, Bird was on the ALL-NBA defense team 2x. He was great at disrupting the pass lanes and was a solid help defender. He certainly had some deficiencies but he was so exceptional at so many other things that I would have no problem calling him a franchise level player.
