NFT: NYC people- opinion of Harlem neighborhood?

DanMetroMan : 2/27/2015 12:45 pm
Friends of BBI,
My girlfriend and I found a pretty sweet apartment for it's prize/size on West 117th in Harlem. I was curious if anyone had an opinion of this area. I was there last night and it seemed pretty chill, bars, restaurants and apparently Frederick Douglass blvd (which is about 1 block away) is exploding (okay being gentrified)... anyone live in Harlem or have an opinion of this specific area of Harlem? Thanks in advance. (oh yeah I'm born and raised in Manhattan, just not that familiar with Harlem since I live downtown).
some close friends are on 110 and Park

they havent had any problems and have a lot of bang for their buck. There's also costco on 116th that I go to all the time. The area in general has gotten much better but there are still some issues.

I would say the most important thing is, how comfortable will your girlfriend be walking from the subway to the apartment alone at night?

That last question is 100% my most important concern. The previous tenant says he and his gf never once had an issue (the 2/3 train is actually 1 avenue away on Lenox). I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of a bigger place in an up and coming area vs. a smaller one somewhere else.
Don't do it

there's too many yuppies moving in to that area.
I had a girlfriend that lived on 118 and FDB back a few years

The area was already pretty good then, now it's exploding with new restaurants and bars. I think you will be fine there.
We have friends at 116 and Manhattan

Are there a lot. It's certainly improving and there are more restaurants and nice stuff. It's certainly doable. It's not the UWS but neither are the prices. You get what you pay for and that includes questions that go along with it.

I work on Columbia's Morningside Campus, and would kill for a deal in the area in which you are looking.

As a longstanding Manhattanite, there's very little to add to the conversation that you are unaware of, I'm afraid- Just that most of the sketch that I've been aware of since beginning here about three years ago occurs above 125th st.

As you mention, the neighborhood is changing, and rapidly at that, with the likes of Red Rooster, etc.

I'll be eager to hear your decision and experience, and good luck.
You should be fine there

I go to the Planet Fitness on 125 and live in the low 100's.
You'd be pretty close to Columbia which helps.
2/3 train at 116 would have you in Penn Station in 20 mins max.
Thanks

guys really appreciate the input. I'm far from a badass but I can handle myself. Just wanted to make sure the area would be "okay" for my girlfriend.

In other words, you're NOT "JayBinQueens". Liar! How can anyone take your word on anything anymore? Makes your Islander fandom look benign in comparison.
I can't

think of a more wretched collection of the dregs of humanity than a Planet Fitness gym during the early evening.

Except for these guys
at least
