National security officials have been notified that an underground tunnel was discovered near a venue for this summer's Pan Am Games in Toronto, CBC News has learned.

The tunnel was dug in the woods near Toronto's Rexall Centre and York University's Keele campus. It was large enough for a person to stand in, at around 2½ metres in height, and was about seven metres long. The tunnel had lights inside, powered by a generator, and the walls and ceiling were reinforced.

The investigation might well require the intercession of theologians able to interpret clues to be found in the prayer beads, often seen dangling from rear-view mirrors.

The rosary — said to distill the entire Gospel message — comes from the Latin rosarium, which means crown or garland of roses.

It consists of 150 Hail Marys arranged in groupings of 10 called "decades." For every 10 Hail Marys, Catholics are instructed to meditate on one mystery of the life of Jesus and Mary (the mysteries are Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious), recite one Our Father (the Lord's Prayer) and close with a doxology (Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.)

Scholars believe prayer beads originated in ancient India. During the Crusades, marauding Christians picked up the practice of prayer beads, introducing them to Western Christendom as the rosary.

Lady Godiva of Coventry, famed for her unclad equestrianism, is said to have left in her will a circlet of gems on which she prayed. This item, she specified, was to be draped around a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The Roman Catholic Church, meanwhile, says the rosary originated with a visit by Virgin Mary to St. Dominic in the 13th century. During this encounter, Mary reportedly gave Dominic a ring of beads and told him Catholics should invoke her aid through its use.

Up until Vatican II, recitation of the rosary was said to produce, among other things, tangible results. Each recitation purportedly reduced by an allotted number of years the punishment of a departed love one sizzling in the flames of Purgatory.

In the 19th century, Pope Leo XIII called the rosary an effective spiritual weapon against the evils afflicting society. Pope Paul VI emphasized its evangelical character and Christocentric inspiration.

In 2002, Pope John Paul II, who attributed his recover from an assassin's bullet to Mary, wrote an apostolic letter on the rosary and declared October 2002 the start of the year of the Rosary.

The rosary remained "at the dawn of the third millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness," he said.

In that letter, John Paul proposed a new set of mysteries — the five Luminous Mysteries — bringing the total to 20.

Though Toronto police investigating the mystery of the York U might make it 21.
