NFL considering changes to combine drills

sphinx : 2/27/2015 1:58 pm
In part ...
“That’s a project we’ll be working on this offseason,” [NFL director of player development Matt] Birk said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “Once we look at the data that was gathered in-game this year, it may be important to know how fast a wide receiver or defensive back can go 60 yards. Maybe for an offensive lineman it’s only 20 yards. We can actually see that in-game: how far are these guys running? What are the real or improved measures of importance and value as it relates to evaluating players and whether or not they should be drafted in the first round or the sixth round?”

How about actually making them run these drills in equipment

seems like a more accurate testing environment.

The thing that I always wonder is, sure, these guys are prepped, in peak personal shape, and they put up these numbers. And we split hairs on inches and fractions of seconds. Ideally theyd stay in top shape to perform, but is maintaining the ability to put up these numbers that much of a given that we should be giving them the weight we do? Work ethic, motivation, will to achieve, ability to not get swept up in an unhealthy lifestyle, etc. is just such a huge variable. But I suppose its the best we can do.

it's not that different from the SATs. Hard work plays a huge role in it.

It's about time they made changes though. The Bench Press being the NFL's "strength" measurement has always been laughable. I'd much rather see what their Squat is.

At best the Bench only tells you who's been putting the work in, especially for the bigger guys.
The combine is a nice supplemental piece

To evaluate players, but I feel like it's essay over analyzed. First of all they are doing any of this in pads and a helmet. There is absolutely nothing that should happen at the combine that overshadows the stablished game tape. I never understood how a player could realistically jump from 3rd or even 2nd round prospect, based on game film, to mid or high first rounder based on combine results. That scenario probably doesn't happen much, but the workout warrior has nothing on the eye in the sky.

LOLOL, true.

Bench is maybe meaningful for a lineman, but squat and deadlift way more important to those in the know about power.

Only counterargument I can think of is that with a decent amount of weight and a lot of reps, squat and deadlift are riskier than bench. I get nervous doing those last reps of a heavy squat or deadlift but with a spotter, don't care about the last bench rep.
