Hope Giants Draft The Top Defensive Playmaker in the Draft

geelabee : 2/27/2015 5:08 pm
Vic Beasley...hoping this guy drops over concerns people see him as to small to play DE at 246lbs agree...What the combine proved that the he can play in space and EXTREMLY impressive in LB drills...See Beasley in the LT / Von Miller Rolle...Kinnard, Beason/McClain, Beasley to go with JPP, Moore, Ayers, & Big Hank is a nice front 7...it's been years since the Giants selected an impact LB...this could be the year...see highlight tape then provide your thoughts?

I think he is local product.....and make too much sense for them......not so much for us.
For me

its Cooper then Beasley. I'd be happy with either of those as our first pick.
Well-

I just hope if we get a good LB, the DC will ensure he can blitz correctly. Giants have not had a single player that could get home regularly until they used Kennard a few times.

It's nice to blitz but if your players don't know how it's properly done, it's a waste of a play.

As far as who to pick at #9, just get the best guy on the board no matter which side of the field he plays. Too bad Fowler seems to keep moving up. He was the guy I thought the Giants would pick.
Looking at Beasley vs. Fowler
mrvax : 2/27/2015 5:45 pm : link
I can see Beasley playing WILL and mixing it up with Spags calling the shots. If he really can run that fast, he may be good enough in coverage to be assigned to TEs and slot receivers. Big upgrade even if he never plays DE.
Beasley night be available

Not sure if Fowler will make it past the Skins at 5.
Fowler was recruited
YANKEE28 : 2/27/2015 6:14 pm : link
and played for Dan Quinn when he coached at U of Florida. Today Quinn is the new Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons, who pick before us. There is zero chance that Fowler is there for us at 9.
Dante Fowler vs Tennessee

Another potential playmaker in the front 7...which tape do you like better Fowler vs Beasley?
Dante Fowler Highlights - ( New Window )
I just don't see it with Fowler....
CBSGameFace : 2/27/2015 7:08 pm : link
That Tennessee tape shows him getting stoned at the line of scrimmage by a substandard left tackle on several occasions. Now, I did see flashes but I attributed those more to a suspect Tennessee team than Fowler's athletic ability.
Fowler cant

LT/Von Miller

roles are not very similar. You can press the SAM into a mainly pass rushing role, but I don't like it. Its great that Beasley is fast and athletic, but he was a DE in college. How much covering of TEs and RBs did he do? I heard the comparison that he could be a Julian Peterson type player, and that is cool, but his pass coverage skills consisted of mugging whoever he was covering. It worked surprisingly well for him as he could have been flagged every time he covered anyone. Refs call it much closer now. I would rather have the Giants pass rush come from the front 4 and creative blitzes, and have the LBs play more traditional 4-3 LB roles.
I think we have the lbs to get the job done

My order
Top LT if available
Top DT
TE block/recv
RB

Any of those 4 we could use a major stud at. If we get two of those four and stay healthy oh boy!

Might be right there with you. Both with great impact potential in our system (especially if Beasley can successfully play the LB part in an LB/DE role)

He is an OLB and doesn't have the bulk to be a DE. As an OLB in a 4/3, he is a stud!

OL is very bad....they need to protect Ryan.A defensive player isn't a lock.
Gosh I hope Beasley gets to us

Coverage skills? What decade of the nfl are you talking about........3-4 OLB, I agree.
Romo`s will have ...

...nigtmares if he falls to us.
He's not the best fit in a 4-3...

but we tried to sign O'Brien Schofield to play a joker role, clearly Reese has contemplated a little creativity to get defensive playmakers. Beasley is a much better athlete than Schofield and wouldn't be a one-trick pony, but there are two questions. First, was the enthusiasm for Schofield about Fewell and what he wanted to do? To put it another way, would Spags be as interested? And second, even if they are still interested in finding someone with that skillset, is the ninth pick too much to spend on it?

Well like it or not, the Giants valued that hybrid role highly enough to spend a high second on a player that they felt could do that in Clint Sintim. Does that mean they could take the same 'gamble' at 9? I remember watching Sintim in drills as well as games and he moved nowhere near as fluidly as Beasley does.

Could Beasley be one of those really 'far in between' finds that can both rush the passer play at least moderately well in space? If the Giants think so he very likely could be in one of our top tiers and in the discussion at 9.
Schofield is another good example

That contract was pretty damn big relative to his production up to that point. Which underscores the value NYG sees in the right type of player for that role.
this is a rare opinion

Enlighten us who these mystery men might be?

Kennard gave us reason to be optimistic he can become a disruptive starter. He still has more to prove in year two.

McClain in a backup in the box plugger role is also adequate.

Beyond those two it gets ugly imo. Paysinger, JWill and Herzlich are JAGS and two are unsigned as of now.

So from where does this confidence spring? Beason? Who has played in 24 of his last 80 possible starts since 2011. Optimism is a good thing but at some point reality sets in. Oue LBs are in need of a major talent infusion.

LBs are lacking even for our system standards unless of course Beason miraculously sustains his health for a full season (wouldn't hedge my bets for that).

Agreed and would be ecstatic if the Giants pick Beasley who is one of my favorite players in this year's draft
