NFT: Caps and Blackhawks talking deal for Patrick Sharp

Jints in Carolina : 2/28/2015 3:34 am
Just as the Capitals were finishing up a sleepy 3-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh and the Chicago Blackhawks were getting trounced 4-0 in Tampa Bay, an intriguing tweet lit up NHL chat rooms.

Could it be?

Could the Caps be so bold as to acquire a clutch player and proven Stanley Cup leader as Patrick Sharp? If so, what might it take to get him before Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline?

Sharp, 33, has two more years and $10.5 million remaining on his contract with the Blackhawks. In 49 games this season he has 10 goals (seven of them on the power play), 22 assists and is a minus-13.

Maybe the Hawks are thinking

it's risky bringing Kane back this year and are already thinking about next year. Tough spot for the Hawks and it wouldn't shock me if more teams try for Sharp if he's really available. Bold move by Caps and I'm wondering if Montreal would make a call to Chicago.
That's fine

he's not the player he used to be, and I couldn't care less how "clutch" he used to be. So was Brad Richards in his prime.

Also I thought the Caps were up against the cap, so they'd have to give back a current asset in return.
Sharp is owed a lot of money

The Caps are going to give up a lot of good depth to clear cap space. It will make them more top heavy. Not to mention, Sharp has a lot of miles on him.

Sharp will also be relied on to be an even more clutch than ever before if he is going to one of the league's biggest underachieving teams.
they can't get rid of Sharp

Quickly enough. He is the reason there is a big divide in the locker room. He is apparently undisciplined in his personal life. Rumors of drunk driving and other things.

Send him to Washington. He will get along great with Ovechkin.
As someone who hates the caps

I'd love to see them pull this off.

Sharp's best days are years behind him, and he makes a lot of money. Still seems to have a flare for the dramatic, but not a player who scares me one bit.
I agree such a move would cost the Caps some assets

Sharp's hit is $5.9 million and his contract runs thru 2016-17. Caps have $2 million in cap space. Some scuttle is that Chicago has interest in Joel Ward. The Caps fans I know are crowing that Sharp is an "elite" player. Good player, yes, but let's not get carried away with "elite". IMO, this won't cost the caps Kuznetsov or Burakovsky (but I wish it would). I could see Ward, a pick (maybe a 3) and if insistent on a top prospect, possibly - but not likely - Kuznetsov, since Trotz does not like to play younger guys. Other possibilities may be Connor Carrick or Stan Galiev. All speculation of course, but Chicago would want a return for sure.
