Possible Free Agent Target - DT Nick Fairley

area junc : 2/28/2015 9:00 am
Sure Suh would be nice, but he is looking for J.J. Watt $$$, some Cofield nostalgia, etc. But if we want a guy who can provide a strong starting option in Spags D, DT Fairley could be good value. 27 years old. Gets over-shadowed by Suh and Ezekiel Ansah but is quietly one of the better DTs in the league. Plays run and pass. Holds the line. Penetrates.

Of course he's got baggage - just caught for reckless driving and missed 8 games w/a knee injury last year. Weight management issues. Ballooned up in camp a couple times. But last year he hired a personal chef and lost 20 lbs. Played extremely well.

13.5 sacks in 40 games is the real deal. The question is, can Tom (and our organization) bring out the best version of him?

The guy underachieved ever since he was drafted until last year and then he still got hurt. Cofield on a two year deal is a far better option then a 5 or 6 year deal for fairley
No thanks.
bigbluehoya : 2/28/2015 9:32 am : link
I don't get too carried away with the character stuff, and I think the "drafting college team captains" thing is heinously stupid...

But this guy truly has a 10-cent head.

Agree with this. Would rather throw money at Bulaga or Orlando Franklin.

Alot of baggage
Coach Mason : 2/28/2015 9:44 am : link
but people like Kerry Collins for example can turnaround their lives too.

Giants are usually pretty good at figuring out who is worth giving another chance to.

Is Fairly one of those guys?

He and Carpenter are my two free agent dreams
WillieYoung : 2/28/2015 10:07 am : link
He has been getting better year by year. i wouldn't break the bank for him (or Carpenter) but both would solidify our two most pressing needs after safety.
Much rather have Fairley at 27

when he may be coming into his own rather than Cofield on the rebound and on the downside.
hate fairley's motor
Torrag : 2/28/2015 10:13 am : link
you just can't count on this guy giving you his all.
His inconsistent brain and motor are problems
JonC : 2/28/2015 10:15 am : link
when you consider his UFA cost. Big risk.
If interested, Giants will thoroughly examine his pysche
Coach Mason : 2/28/2015 10:18 am : link
has more upside than most available DTs (due to age and skillset) that you won't need to break the bank for.

Giants will work with and help players who they feel want to make the necessary changes in their life to become better people and football players.

On surface though looks like a major risk.
so he finally got in shape for contract year?

spend big on upgrading the Oline and Safety, then take the best players possible in the draft. I'd like to see Spags go to work and fix some things as the defense can't play any worse.

DT is a position that is super risky to spend on.
Personal choice is Langford
Coach Mason : 2/28/2015 10:35 am : link
solid not spectacular player who has been extremely durable throughout his career and is younger than some of the other guys out there that may be on decline. Dollars will likely be reasonable.

Think there is a lot of truth in this. We have had our share of FA signees who proceeded to spend most of their time injured after we sign them. You have to learn from your mistakes sooner or later.

No one knows if Fairley is just coming into his own or not. He could just as easily get fat and lazy with the guaranteed money he's likely to get. With Cofield you know what you're getting, and his durability and track record are much better. Yes he's 3-4 years older but on a two year deal, you have a lot less risk. The Giants won't be able to fix every position this off season, signing a vet DT, that has already played in NY and understands the culture and expectations, makes way more sense. Devote that money to the OL or secondary and the Giants are a better team next year.
Nick Fairley is a coach's heartbreaker
Beer Man : 2/28/2015 10:59 am : link
he has the tools, he has the talent, he has flashed when he wants to play, but he doesn't seem to want to dedicate himself (and the key word is when he "wants" to play).
Cofield
mrvax : 2/28/2015 11:08 am : link
is available now. If he's affordable, give him a workout/physical.
NO to Fairley YES to Iupati and Moore.
chiefmps : 2/28/2015 11:17 am : link
Still have to stay with drafting Shelton or Brown in the first round so there is no need to sign Fairley. As for free agents, if possible sign Iupati for the LG spot and
Rahim Moore.
Paea or Langford

We need a 3 Tech DT with Hankins at the 1 Tech.
He has never lived up to his last year at Auburn

numbers/structure
area junc : 2/28/2015 12:55 pm : link
fairley's agent is asking for a henry melton-type deal (from cowboys last year), a precedence 4 top DT w/injury concerns

4 years, $29M max with an out after the 1st year. melton only got a $1M signing bonus. probably have 2 give fairley at least $5M (melton was coming off an ACL) but total #s will b in same ballpark
The Burress signing taught me never to say never.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/28/2015 1:44 pm : link
It's just hard to imagine a structure that makes sense with Fairley, other than a deal that gives him almost nothing up front and makes him earn his money every year. That's what the Lions tried in 2014, by declining his 2015 option. It was working reasonably well until he got hurt (again).

Melton was a completely different situation, and it didn't really work out that well for the Cowboys. They got one year, then had to either cut Melton or overpay him.
he's an interesting player
Sneakers O'toole : 2/28/2015 1:59 pm : link
but I'm with the crowd here on the risk/reward fear.
depends on the price
msh : 2/28/2015 2:25 pm : link
if they could get him cheap enough it would be worth considering he is part of what made that detriot front good there is some risk but then all the guys that make it to free agency do so because they have a fault of some kind be it fit to scheme/cap cost/production/off field problems etc

if it was for the right price and he was a depth/rotation player would deffo be a major upgrade over patterson in that regard thou i expect they figure bromley to take more snaps and look for another mid-late draft pick to back up the DT rotation depth

i would rather they spent some free agency money on the blackhole that is the OL,i figure spags will make the DL better than fewell just through better defensive schemes and more creative ways to achieve QB pressure
He

was damn good at Auburn but now as a pro I've wondered if he's as good as we think because of 1. his talent 2. he played next to Suh or 3. both?
Well notice I did not mention
nyynyg : 2/28/2015 3:41 pm : link
cost. I am not saying sign Fairley to a back breaking contract. If it is prohibitive, then you pass. But I don't know if bringing Cofield back into the fold makes a lot of sense either.
I'd look at Paea
JonC : 2/28/2015 3:59 pm : link
NYG liked him and Langford both in the draft.

If we want to recreate the 'Tree-Line' we may opt for the 6'6 Langford over the 6'1 Paea (though Paea may be the better pass rusher).

Agreed Paea and Langford were both favorites of mine in the draft. I was hoping Langford would sign with the Giants when his rookie contract was up in Miami but the Rams gave him a big contract. Langford is exactly the type of DT that the Giants like and I would be very surprised if they don't at least show some interest in him. Since he was released the Giants could technically sign him today if they wished.

Nah. We need to play Hankins as a three and get a one. We were 30th vs the run last year.
