Sure Suh would be nice, but he is looking for J.J. Watt $$$, some Cofield nostalgia, etc. But if we want a guy who can provide a strong starting option in Spags D, DT Fairley could be good value. 27 years old. Gets over-shadowed by Suh and Ezekiel Ansah but is quietly one of the better DTs in the league. Plays run and pass. Holds the line. Penetrates.
Of course he's got baggage - just caught for reckless driving and missed 8 games w/a knee injury last year. Weight management issues. Ballooned up in camp a couple times. But last year he hired a personal chef and lost 20 lbs. Played extremely well.
13.5 sacks in 40 games is the real deal. The question is, can Tom (and our organization) bring out the best version of him?
But this guy truly has a 10-cent head.
Agree with this. Would rather throw money at Bulaga or Orlando Franklin.
Giants are usually pretty good at figuring out who is worth giving another chance to.
Is Fairly one of those guys?
Giants will work with and help players who they feel want to make the necessary changes in their life to become better people and football players.
On surface though looks like a major risk.
DT is a position that is super risky to spend on.
No one knows if Fairley is just coming into his own or not. He could just as easily get fat and lazy with the guaranteed money he's likely to get. With Cofield you know what you're getting, and his durability and track record are much better. Yes he's 3-4 years older but on a two year deal, you have a lot less risk. The Giants won't be able to fix every position this off season, signing a vet DT, that has already played in NY and understands the culture and expectations, makes way more sense. Devote that money to the OL or secondary and the Giants are a better team next year.
Rahim Moore.
This!!
4 years, $29M max with an out after the 1st year. melton only got a $1M signing bonus. probably have 2 give fairley at least $5M (melton was coming off an ACL) but total #s will b in same ballpark
Melton was a completely different situation, and it didn't really work out that well for the Cowboys. They got one year, then had to either cut Melton or overpay him.
if it was for the right price and he was a depth/rotation player would deffo be a major upgrade over patterson in that regard thou i expect they figure bromley to take more snaps and look for another mid-late draft pick to back up the DT rotation depth
i would rather they spent some free agency money on the blackhole that is the OL,i figure spags will make the DL better than fewell just through better defensive schemes and more creative ways to achieve QB pressure
If we want to recreate the 'Tree-Line' we may opt for the 6'6 Langford over the 6'1 Paea (though Paea may be the better pass rusher).
Agreed Paea and Langford were both favorites of mine in the draft. I was hoping Langford would sign with the Giants when his rookie contract was up in Miami but the Rams gave him a big contract. Langford is exactly the type of DT that the Giants like and I would be very surprised if they don't at least show some interest in him. Since he was released the Giants could technically sign him today if they wished.
Nah. We need to play Hankins as a three and get a one. We were 30th vs the run last year.
