what is your positional ranking?

George from PA : 3/1/2015 9:05 am
It was mentioned a few times but teams hold certain positions higher than others, How would you rank them if need was equal?

This is my list:
1.
QB: How we take for granted Ernie's trade but without a franchise QB, a team is pretty much destine to never compete for a Super Bowl, with some exception.
2.
DE: In a 4-3 or the "LT" role in a 3-4, Pressuring that franchise QB is one of the few ways to stop offenses in today's NFL. Oh, while stopping the run.
3.
LT: Protecting the franchise QB 's bindside is critcal not only to running an offense but to the QB's health.
Or
Corner: Slowing down the pass happy offense without critical mistakes is extremely unique skill set.
4.
WR: Sure handed, reliable, Go-To reciever has become not only critical but one is not enough, needing 3 to 4 . Granted college football is producing them in quantities.
Or
A True 3 down LBer: rarely seen usualy mistaken by large strong safeties.
5.
DT: Internal pressure and controling the interior line is critical.
Or
G/C: Controling the interior line is critical.
6.
TE: Reliable safety net for QB and "6th" OL is no longer a luxary but key to winning.
7.
S: The center fielder who covers for the corners and needs to tackle everything, everywhere....maybe....I should move up in the scale.
8.
LB: The captain of the defense has become afterthoughts in todays pass happy NFL.....unless you can cover.
9.
FB: This role is not even used by some team.

So I guess you

don't value RB at all?
A meaningless question.
Ira : 3/1/2015 9:55 am : link
When you get a tight end like Gronkowski or Witten, they can be franchise players.
lol.....forget RB......sorry.

But that is a tough position to rank....very important position but see Armand Bradshaw.

College football is producing a ton of Talent and there is some what a reverse proportion to productivity.....like milage on a car.....some is good but too much is bad.

Not meaningless but 20/20 hindsight would be nice.

Gronk was a 3rd round pick.
....i suspect he would be one of the first off the board.

A team is only as good as its weakest link. When it comes time to draft, you have to decide what position would help the team the most. While we might all agree that generally speaking, QB is the most important position in football. Every team will benefit differently from taking the same player at the same draft position. Teams can speak all the want about taking the best player available. We all know that isn't the truth. A QB may be the best player available, but only teams actually desperate for one will actually draft him. We will not draft Winston or Mariotta even if they are ranked #1 and 2 respectively.

Last year we drafted a WR over the OL because the Giants believed giving Eli more weapons would benefit the team more than an offensive lineman. Due to how excellent that Beckham pick proved to be, when presented with that same scenario this year, the wiser choice, the one which will benefit the team the most. might be the OL and not the WR position.

The Giants are going to have to make a decision as to which position, and that also depends on the players available when we draft and which FAs we've picked up, will in fact benefit the team the greatest.

To me, that means the Offensive line is a much more likely choice this year than last year. Scherff would be a great pick to solidify the line and improve the run game dramatically. The Run game was a big weakness.

However, we all know that the defense against the run was as equally poor as the run game. Our weakness was not pass rushing; it was the stopping the run. I think that places a much greater chance we draft a DT than a DE. A player like Danny Shelton would certainly fill the bill for run stopper.

It's also true that we need are desperate for safety help, but on the other hand, when you have a great pass rush, there is less need for great safeties.

Certainly, we can always use play-makers in the WR position and the 3 best ones in Cooper, White, and Parker would all be good picks. We also can always use edge rushers and there are a few who would fill the bill in Gregory, Ray, Dupree, and Fowler. We could also use another CB like Waynes as well.

The question becomes which player helps us the most this year. Which one plugs up the leaky dam the best. I see our weakest links as DL and OL. I see us favoring a player like Shelton or Scherff over the playmakers this year. Unless we fix that in FA, I do not see us picking the WR or edge rusher.

Is that Armand "The Hammer" Bradshaw?

Great, reasonable post...but you know the draft isn't about the next year only.

You do comment about FA at the end but I think if you think in terms of building a team 2-3 years out, you might see why they could very well take another WR this year.

To be very clear, I am not saying that is the right strategy. I am simply saying that the value at WR appears LIKLEY to be much higher when we pick than OL, or probably DL. Sherff has a very good chance to be a rock solid G but a real question exists re his ability to handle the edge. JR likely echos the Gmen MO re taking playmakers that high vs. interior linemen.

Totally agree re run D problems but pass rushers are more highly rated for Gmen that DTs. Shelton is somewhat unique and I love the idea of shoring up the run D. However, I suspect, the odds are against it. The edge DL guys are better 3-4 guys so that is not ideal either IMHO.

If you think in terms of 3 years out, if you want a WR and OL infusion, just to make an conceptual case, perhaps thinking in terms of the following:

Simple 1-10 scale:

Rd 1: Adding Cooper/Parker/White: assume "blue chip" 10 grade
Rd 2: Adding a OG like Thomlinson etc, (maybe C Erving) or a 9
Total team talent add = 19

or

You go need heavy:
Rd1 Sherff to address OL and get a 9
Rd 2 add a D Smith or Strong or insert WR here as deep pool, and get another 9
Team value add =18

Huge difference? Maybe not but I think JR and team go former route...all else being equal. Obviously assumptions made re grades just to highlight consensus grades and general concept draft approach.
I thought this was a Kama Sutra thread. LOL

Your point is well taken and I do agree with you. But due to Eli's age, I think there may be more pressure to produce now. Coughlin may not have the luxury of waiting another year. From my perspective as a fan, I would be happy with taking the best player available. From the viewpoint of the coach, they want results asap. I do not see them taking anyone who is a developmental will be great in a few years type. I see them taking the player who will have the most immediate impact. Last year both OL or WR would fit the bill. This year, I don't think that is equally so, and so OL or DL I think could be given more weight.
