NFT: Old timers, did you dally with the Jets in 1968-69?

DG : 3/1/2015 1:53 pm
I admit,I had a brief dalliance with Gang Green in 1968-69. It was a magical time, plus the Giants (other than Fran and Homer) were boring.

Plus i hated Baltimore sports teams..so i carried my affair over to the Mets.

Then in 1970, it was all over. Munson was a rookie, and it was back to Phil, Frank, and Bill and the Yankees, and Glickman, Lynch and Big Blue..and there was this young RB out of Michigan by the name of Ron Johnson...

The Jets and non-football threads just seem to go together like PB & J.

I so wanted John Unitas to win that Super Bowl. He was injured all year and backup Earl Morrall led theColts to the NFC Championship. The Colts stayed with Morrall for the Super Bowl. Unit as came off the bench late to lead the Colts to their only score.

Dad was a Giants fan at the time and I eventually jumped on board but that was a very dark era of NY Giants football.
Absolutely

I was always a Giants fan, I listened to Marty Glickman and Al DeRogatis every week, but when Namath was playing for the Jets, I admit to really enjoying those games also, I liked the new AFL league, it was a little more wide open, and Namath was huge coming out of college.

I used to attend the Jersey City Jets games back then every week at the old Roosevelt Stadium. My older cousin used to take me, back then even high school football was huge, he attended St. Micheals from Union City, they had a huge rivalry with North Bergen, both were perennial powers back then, so going to the Jersey Jets games with my older cousin was really cool.

Bottom line was that I was always a Giants fan, but the brief period when Namath played for the Jets, I admit that I did also like the Jets too. There was no conflict to it as I could see. I loved sports, played baseball in three leagues, and I could not get enough of all sports. It was my entire life. I remember how huge it was when Steve Spurrier came out of college also, he was not on the level of Namath, but he was also huge back then. But the cool college QB's coming to the pro's were of great interest to me back then. Jim Plunkett from Stanford also was huge also.

I always loved Namath, but not the Jets. I wanted Baltimore to

for the Jets to beat the Colts in the Super Bowl. I was a huge Giants fan but -- then -- not a Jets hater. Different story today.
and I was a huge Yankees fan but I sure as hell

rooted for the '69 Mets. How could you not?
Like Bleeding Blue, I came to sports consciousness when NY
Lurts : 3/1/2015 3:09 pm : link
had only one team in each sport. The idea of switching allegiances was never entertained.

but it was a different world then. For example, I respected and loathed the Jets.

And, like everyone else, I knew the downward spiral was temporary and was fated to end with the drafting of Rich Buzin.
The who?

I rooted for the Jets in 69. I still root for the Mets as a Yankee fan. Not the Jets lately though. But I rooted for them when Parcells was there. Curious to see what Bowles can do. I was hoping the Giants would hire him.
In 69 I watched the Jets

Two of my best friends were huge fans and some of my cousins also. I actually was at the AFC championship game when Joe hit Maynard for a long gain and I think either Snell or Boozer scored the winning touchdown.
I also remember a pass that was ruled a lateral and recovered by the Jets as the Raiders were moving down the field.

However when Mike Battle hurdled a Giant in an exhibition game in New Haven I was back to being a Giant fan only
did then, still do

I've rooted for the Mets since 62 and the NYY since 60.

Rooting for any team does not make me less of a Giants or Yankees fan.

My Tom Seaver jersey hangs in my closet next to my Paul O'Niell, Eli Manning and Joe Namath jerseys. And I proudly wear them all.

(My Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth jerseys have gotten too small for me. They are in storage. They'll probably fit me when I'm 85.)
Never!!!

Jet fans were obnoxious from the beginning. I always wanted them to lose and still do.
The Jets had a very entertaining team in that era, it wasn't hard

I took a lot of shit from Jets and Mets fans, when they were riding high and the Giants and Yanks sucked! i stood by my teams through and through. I don't take pleasure in their (Jets and Mets) losing I just don't really care. I don't root for another team I watch other games and take interest, but they're not my teams. As I posted earlier NFW is NFW.

I loved the way Namath got to everyone by guaranteeing the win.
I flirted with the Jets...

From about 82-85 as a kid. I grew up in South Florida so we see a lot of the Jets. Everyone were Dolphins fans and I guess just to be contrarian I became a gang green fan. After suffering embarassing loss after loss I then jumped on the Gmen bandwagon in 86 once the Jets started out 10-1, finished 10-6 and lost after leading the Browns in the Divisional round.

I jumped on the Gmen and when they went all the way and they had my favorite color Blue I said this is it. I'm done with Joe Walton and Kenny O'Brien.
No way. In 1969 I routed for two teams.
wgenesis123 : 3/1/2015 6:50 pm : link
The New York Giants and the Baltimore Colts. I hated the Jets and I hated the Mets. But I did route for the Mets in the series in 1969. They were magic.
Are you kidding me?

As a Giants, Yankee, Ranger, Knicks fan, Who didn't want all the Championships in one year in NY?

Come on.

We're talking an era when every bottom dwelling high school team thought they had a chance against the giants.
No way, I have always hated the Jets
PatersonPlank : 3/1/2015 7:22 pm : link
Same goes for the Mets too.
My favorites
mrvax : 3/1/2015 8:41 pm : link
are Giants/Mets. Came from a Jets/Mets family, old Brooklyn Dodgers, etc.

I don't understand why if you are from the NY area and our Giants aren't in it, you wouldn't want your little sister to win. Jets & their fans don't bother me at all. They never amount to anything and their long suffering fans know that.
