I know we root for the laundry... but there are certain guys on this roster i want to go to war with the next 3-5 years... if we dont win a Cup with them so be it, but these are the guys I want to live and die with and see hoist a Cup on Garden ice:
-Hank
-Stepan
-Staal
-Girardi (I understand the long-term concerns)
-MZA
-D Moore (because he lost his wife)
Obviously i really like our other players too, thats not the point. But i want to see these guys above rewarded for their commitment to this organization that in most cases extends back to the lockout. A championship with these guys would make it all that much more sweeter and Goddamn it, they deserve it. I deserve it too by the way. Get it done.
I get that, but it shouldn't preclude Sather from trying to find a team DG would accept a trade to, he can make it happen. Moving Staal makes less sense, moving Boyle seems certain, just a matter of how/when.
I suspect the team had that in mind when they extended Girardi. Stepan, MSL, and Hags are the only guys up this off-season, and after next year Kreider is up again.
I don't claim intimate knowledge about the cap, but I have to think those scenarios were in their minds when they re-signed him.
Meaning, they likely had a plan for the first three years
Kreider is the one that worries me the most. I think he could turn into a 30 goal scorer next year and turn into a premier PFD with elite speed. He could turn into a 6 per player and it's going to be hard for us to clear the space.
I definitely share that affinity for guys like Giardi, Staal, and Hank (obviously) who have been here a long time and helped bridge the gap from those somewhat successful Jagr teams to the excellent group we have now. Same reason it was so tough to see Cally go, despite the financial sense that it made.
I never liked Cally as much as most - as a superbly talented individual myself, grit and work ethic don't resonate with me as it does for the less fortunate here.
Also he was a fucking whining diver. Brassard's filled in for him in that regard.
sportrac and nhl numbers are both prorating the cap hits for the new Rangers ... sportrac has them just over the cap, the other site has them about 750k under.
I'd think looking to trade Girardi makes more sense.
Depends if they feel McDonagh can play on the RS. And as Deej said, I don't think it's tenable to have Yandle on the third pairing and we need to open up cap space.
So methinks either Girardi and Staal will be gone. Did Uncle Larry have a brainfart regarding the Boyle buyout and the 35+ rule? Something like:

So it looks as if Sheppard will play on the wing in Detroit with Moore and Fast, which means Glass is scratched.
Shep was skating with Moore and Fast. Glass was filling in for Zuccarello.

YES! YES! YES!
Please don't do this yes yes yes bullshit.
Hey man, I'm a wrestling fan. I can do it. Our brothers on the Island can't because they have no idea where it comes from. #AmericanDragon #BryanDanielson
Granted the chant sucks now. The Islanders ruin everything.

Jettison Boyle...cap crunch solved. Use savings to work on extending young core. We should be able to hang onto two of the CK/Step/Hags trifecta. Replenish from the farm. Team remains a Cup contender throughout Hanks window.
MSL seems to want to finish his career here, but is he willing to take $4M-4.5M? Anything more than $4.5M makes me think we should let him go, which I'm fine with. We have some guys who should be ready for that role next year.
I'd rather keep the kids but Zucc was the one I was worried about losing. Hags is probably next kid out if money gets tight, but I'd also pass on MSL if the space is needed.
I would offer MSL 2.5-3 TOPS and just be like.. we want you here for another year and would like you to finish up as a Ranger but that's all we can offer.
He's been around. He understands the business and knows we have young guys we need to retain. I think there's a chance he takes a significant discount like that to stay and hang them up here.
But it also depends what happens this season. If we win the Cup somehow, I could see him calling it a career there and going out on top.
I could see MSL riding off into the sunset with The Cup
There's no way you offer MSL more than $2.5-3mm next year. Just not worth it. If he wants more, you thank him and keep Hagelin.
He wants to stay in the tri-state area, but the Isles will be in Brooklyn next year so there's always that option for him. Which would be fine - let them overpay what will be a 41 year old.
Frankly I'd almost prefer to keep Hagelin no matter what. I like MSL but the only upside to 41 year olds is apparently Florida will give you a 2nd round pick for one at the deadline if your team sucks.
I believe he signed one year deals but I don't remember. I wish capgeek existed. St. Louis would have to make a choice but the Rangers cannot offer a prohibitive contract.
In a vacuum, a player of MSL's caliber is definitely worth over 3. But he wanted to come here to be closer to Greenwich/his family, he's on a team with Cup aspirations and he's also at the very end of his career which are unique circumstances that could result in him taking less money to play here another year or so and then retire.
I really don't think the guy is at a point where he's just going to say "I'll play for whoever wants to pay me the most"
this has been discussed already...like a million times.
So why not go back to your Isles thread, dumbass?
hudson FTW.
Poor Glass. Right after he starts filling up the stat sheet last night he gets a seat
Loved me some Cam Talbot last night. We survived some shakiness from him early in this stretch by scoring 6 goals a game, but he was a big part of the W last night
I just dont think next year's MSL is worth more than $3 million
to this particular team. We have the veteran leadership, we have depth at the W position, we have younger guys ready for top 6 minutes.
Yes, there probably is a team(s) out there where he would have $4-5 million/year worth... maybe even the Brooklyn team... up to MSL if that's the road he wants to take.
But hopefully Sather stays firm with him when it comes to NYR. Hell, if you were doing a zero-cost budgeting exercise - if MSL was on another team, we really wouldn't be considering him this offseason as a free agent pickup.
Why should things be any different just because he's already here?
I think you could move Boyle in the offseason. Maybe Mcllrath will be ready.

Either way, should be manageable assuming they can dump Boyle.
MSL or Hags (or other) is a goner ... perhaps Boyle too.
Depends if they feel McDonagh can play on the RS. And as Deej said, I don't think it's tenable to have Yandle on the third pairing and we need to open up cap space.

McDonagh/Staal-Girardi/McDonagh
Yandle-Klein
Skjei-McIlrath/Boyle
I think he's our most valuable forward. Brassard got 5 and 5, and Stepan's much more valuable.
So it looks as if Sheppard will play on the wing in Detroit with Moore and Fast, which means Glass is scratched.

YES! YES! YES!
And I'm someone who loves Step and think he's a lock to stay regardless.

I'm sure they'll face Nashville's backup goalie thursday too. Fuckin' Fishsticks.
2009-10 $1,000,000
2010-11 $1,000,000

Mats Zuccarello not practicing..so Tanner Glass skating with Derick Brassard and Rick Nash. #NYR
Zucc gets his money and stops trying.
At least we have Glass to win games for us.
