5 Greatest Giants of All Time

Miami_JintsFan : 3/2/2015 12:13 pm
Yet another list to pick apart. Impossible to pick 5 and place them in order but let me see BBI give it a try.
The 5 Greatest? - ( New Window )
I'll state the obvious
mfsd : 3/2/2015 12:17 pm : link
any so-titled list that doesn't start with LT is rendered too silly to be considered seriously.

For fun, here's mine (with caveat, I started following the Giants circa 1980)...with a general criteria of greatness, longevity, how good they were in their prime, meaning to the organization, and playing big when it counted most:

1. LT
2. Eli
3. Strahan
4. Tiki
5. Simms
I'm not a student of Giants history,
Ira : 3/2/2015 12:17 pm : link
so I can't compare the players I've seen to the ones who came before I started watching (in the '50s). But I do like your list.
I'm not sure if that's supposed to be the 1-5 order
I Love Clams Casino : 3/2/2015 12:18 pm : link
or they consider all the picks equal, but if it's 1 through 5 ranked, then L.T. is not ranked correctly, he is, above and beyond everybody else on the list the greatest Giant player of all time......he's probably the 2nd or 3rd best player to play, regardless of team, and the top defensive player of all-time
No Y.A.
old man : 3/2/2015 12:20 pm : link
No Sam Huff, Mel Hein,...
Nevertheless, a good list.

My take
Bluenatic : 3/2/2015 12:20 pm : link
1) Lawrence Taylor
2) Frank Gifford
3) Emlen Tunnell
4) Harry Carson
5) Eli Manning

Needs a new job.

LT is the greatest Giant ever and it's really not close.

Shit, he's one of the best players in history. Period.
That's tough to limit it to 5
Matt M. : 3/2/2015 12:25 pm : link
Just in my lifetime:
LT
Strahan
Tiki
Eli
Simms
Honorable mention: Carson, Bavaro, Hampton, Banks, Toomer

All time is tough because I didn't see some real greats. Here is my crack:

LT
Strahan
Gifford
Huff
Roosevelt Brown

???
LT, Gifford, Tunnel, Huff, Bavaro

Post-merger top five:
Big Blue Blogger : 3/2/2015 12:36 pm : link
1. Taylor
2. Strahan
3. Carson
4. Manning
5. Simms

Near misses: Tiki Barber and Mark Bavaro. Tiki had a much longer career, but they are similar in that they were both dominant for about three years - Bavaro at the beginning of his career, Tiki at the end of his.
5 Greatest Giants

1. LT
2. Frank Gifford
3. Rosey Brown
4. Michael Strahan
5. Andy Robustelli

This was harder than I thought it would be. Making a list of all time Giants that doesn't include Mel Hein or Sam Huff just seems wrong but if you are drawing the line at 5 this is my 5.
LT, Strahan, Eli, Gifford, Bavaro
Joeguido : 3/2/2015 12:40 pm : link
.
No Mel Heim
blueblood : 3/2/2015 12:42 pm : link
No Robustelli?? No Carson?? No Huff ???
This should be the top 5 Ginats that we have witnessed
Geeman : 3/2/2015 12:51 pm : link
Mine would be

1. LT
2. Carson
3. Tiki
4. Strahan
5. Eli
Honorable mention: Armstead, Bavaro, Banks, Simms, Toomer, Cruz.
OK
JerseyCityJoe : 3/2/2015 12:55 pm : link
Taylor
Simms
Gifford
Carson
Spider Lockhart
.....
Micko : 3/2/2015 12:55 pm : link
I can't choose 5 but I know Bavaro would be on my list. Granted, he's my favorite Giants of all time - that's for sure.
off topic
djm : 3/2/2015 12:59 pm : link
but I saw an MSN list today that displayed the 25 greatest pro teams of all time. Not just NFL, but pro sports in general.

Guess who made the list....

Yup...you guessed it....the 2007 Pats.

Thanks, try the veal.
Oh those top 25 lists.,... - ( New Window )
assuming it's player only...
Chuck Q : 3/2/2015 1:07 pm : link
Taylor
Eli
Stray
Tiki
Huff

6 - 10
Sims
Carson
Em Tunnell
Rosey Brown
Connerly

hon mention
Toomer
Bavaro

hard to say about the players before the 50's - like Benny Friedman for example
LT fourth?
jeff57 : 3/2/2015 1:10 pm : link
To the garbage with this list.
....
Klaatu : 3/2/2015 1:48 pm : link
1. Andre.
2. Baba.
3. Oglas.
4. Goliath.
5. Jolly Green.
Any list that has LT as # 4 is worth the paper it's written on.
Victor in CT : 3/2/2015 1:53 pm : link
# 4 would be to low for all time NFL, let alone all time Giants

1. Jim Brown
2. Lawrence Taylor
3. let the debate begin
IMO, he
Pete in MD : 3/2/2015 1:56 pm : link
got the players right but in the wrong order. At least this wasn't in that annoying slide show format. I'm sure we can all agree on that.
Keeping Mel Hein off a Top 5 Giants list....
kinard : 3/2/2015 2:12 pm : link
... is like keeping babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig off a Yankees list.

Eight times an All-Pro center, the NFL's MVP in 1938; center of two NFL Championship teams; played in 7 total NFL championship games. First class inductee in pro football HOF in 1963 and member of the NFL's 50th and 75th All time NFL teams. Let's not forget what this guy meant to the franchise.

Probably #2 on list after LT. Throw in Gifford, Manning and Rosy Brown and there's your top 5.
Impossible

Big Blue '56 : 3/2/2015 2:40 pm : link
1-LT

2-Eli

3-Rosy Brown

4-Gifford

5-Tunnell
LT is obviously the greatest
Go Terps : 3/2/2015 2:44 pm : link
But I'd be fine putting Eli at #1. The guy came up enormous in the most important spots possible.
LT
x meadowlander : 3/2/2015 2:47 pm : link
ELI
TITTLE
BARBER

Kinard, absolutely right. the only thing is no one
gtt350 : 3/2/2015 3:02 pm : link
saw Mel play
What about Fran Tarkenton or Fed Dryer
Hot Rod in Florida : 3/2/2015 3:24 pm : link
Doesn't anyone remember him? Dryer anyone?
Tarkenton was my favorite Giant growing up
Bill L : 3/2/2015 3:39 pm : link
but IMO he's a Viking.

Dryer was a cop and Stepfanie Kramer was da bomb.

Maybe Fran was my second favorite after Joe Morrison.

That being stated.

1) Lawrence Taylor
2) Roosevelt Brown
3) Mel Hein
4) Emlen Tunnell

Terrible list, he must be an Eagles fan
PatersonPlank : 3/2/2015 5:07 pm : link

2) Gifford
3) Strahan
4) Huff
5) Eli

exercise many times in the past. It should be the top 10, but if limited to 5, I agree with BB 56"s list.
1. Lawrence Taylor
Elisha10 : 3/2/2015 7:33 pm : link
2. Mel Hein
3. Emlen Tunnell
4. Rosey Brown
5. Michael Strahan
Does character count?
Mike From Brielle : 3/2/2015 7:35 pm : link
YA
ELI
Carson
LT
Strahan

Should have Bavaro, Hampton, Marshall, Simms and if I had enough time I could probably think of another 55
I'm fine with Gifford at one
JOrthman : 3/2/2015 9:55 pm : link
But how does any list with all time Giants not have LT at four.
Humor list
SirSirob : 3/4/2015 6:09 am : link
Mike Sherrard
Zeke Mowatt
Dave Brown
Jarrod Bunch
Cedric Jones
I don't know how anyone can put a player on a list like this who
baadbill : 3/4/2015 6:28 am : link
they've never seen play ... it's like saying "Mighty Mouse" belongs on there, because if you haven't actually seen someone play, then he is basically a fictional player you heard about but have no personal basis for making any comparison. None at all.

Further, what makes someone a "great Giant"? Tiki Barber was probably the best running back that ever played for the Giants organization, but he sure as hell was not a great Giant. In fact, imo he was a disruptive force and a fucked up teammate who ruined the lockeroom cohesion of the teams he played on. He was the Terrell Owens of the Giants. Certainly a great running back, but sure as hell not a Great Giant.

To me, to make a list of Great Giants, you must have been a great player as well as a great leader. When I think of leaders, someone like George Martin comes to mind. Or a Van Pelt and Carson. Taylor and Simms. Bavaro and Banks. A Strahan or Mannning.
