Pats franchise Gostkowski, not McCourty

jeff57 : 3/2/2015 2:53 pm
Per Schefter and Graziano.

If not signed by the 10th, Graziano expects Giants to make a play for McCourty. As they should.
McCourty would effectively replace Rolle,
AJ23 : 3/2/2015 2:55 pm : link
if we went that route, no? Can't imagine we'd be able to sign both.
Half the league

will make a play for McCourty, he's the best safety available by many accounts.

I think he's out of the Giants price range, but I'd love for me to be wrong.

.
Half the league wants a lot of guys,
Big Blue '56 : 3/2/2015 3:06 pm : link
but that hasn't stopped us from going after(and usually signing, imo) guys we really want
Thats been the rumor
old man : 3/2/2015 3:08 pm : link
here in NE for a few days; its easy when you have DR and BB already in the secondary.

Good point, the Giants don't lose bidding wars (Karlos Dansby, Albert Haynesworth, etc, etc, etc.
In any case it deepens the safety field
BillT : 3/2/2015 3:09 pm : link
Which is good for the Giants who are looking for one.
Plus
old man : 3/2/2015 3:11 pm : link
its the Pats and their low salary payroll structure, especially while they work out a 'can-back-with-your-last-best-offer before you sign elsewhere.
A PK is cheaper than a CB.

We didn't go hard for Dansby iirc..BBIers wanted him badly(I know I wanted him), but not certain the Giants did..Haynesworth? Not sure there either as we've heard conflicting reports..

What is the Giants price range for safety? How did you acquire this info? Thanks!

eleventy billion dollars.

I cannot reveal my sources for where I acquired this information because I don't want to incriminate the over the cap website.

After franchising JPP they have around 5M left on the cap.

So until another transaction happens they don't have much more than that and free agency opens in 5 days.
If McCourtey wants to be back home,
Mr. Bungle : 3/2/2015 3:38 pm : link
the Giants would have an edge that other teams (except the Jets) don't.
As is the case with calling for Suh
JonC : 3/2/2015 3:41 pm : link
we need space, big time. I don't think we're spending $8M per on a safety with this swiss cheese roster. This isn't 2010 where they went for broke signing Rolle ...

If we are breaking the bank on the safety position. I think Id rather throw 5 mil at Parker and save some cash for Miles. Fix both safety spots. Fantasy probably.
The franchise tag
Doomster : 3/2/2015 4:02 pm : link
for JPP puts a big crimp into what moves we can make.....and if JPP takes his time getting a big offer elsewhere, the best players can be taken.....

And if he wants to team up with his twin brother the Titans have an edge.
I might be in the minority here..
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/2/2015 4:06 pm : link
But I think a deal will get done with JPP. I just hope its soon.
I have been saying this for quite some time
NYGmen58 : 3/2/2015 4:11 pm : link
He should be the Giants #1 target in Free Agency.
I've never heard him say anything
pjcas18 : 3/2/2015 4:12 pm : link
other than wanting to re-sign with the Patriots.

and in fact, he's gone a step further and said he now considers New England home.

Not sure being in NJ gives the Giants any advantage.
McCourty
jamesmichaelworm : 3/2/2015 4:18 pm : link
Is sooooo overated it's not funny hes been toasted tooooo many times
i actually don't think a deal happens soon
nyynyg : 3/2/2015 6:03 pm : link
they had the whole off-season to come to numbers. Is the fact that the Giants dropped the tag on JPP going to bring them to table to flesh out a long term deal. We haven't heard anything about a deal being imminent. Quite the opposite.

Think we just had our FA splash with franchising JPP.
We should be looking for two starting safeties.
Ira : 3/2/2015 6:16 pm : link
We don't have any on our roster.
McCourty would be my number FA target
Ben in Tampa : 3/2/2015 9:06 pm : link
to bring in, but I just don't think the numbers are gonna work out.
Does
jamesmichaelworm : 3/2/2015 10:29 pm : link
Anyone remember how bad the pats secondary was before revis and browner was added??? Like record breaking bad....evil genius Bill had one of the worst secondaries in terms of passing yards and big plays....and McCourty had his hands all over that....believe me they can do better than over pay for him
James I disagree
pjcas18 : 3/2/2015 10:34 pm : link
McCourty was among the best safeties in the league since moving to safety in 2013.

Prior to then he was inconsistent at CB.

But safety, no such struggles with consistency, even before Revis and Browner.
