Let's start subtracting
Big Blue '56 : 3/2/2015 4:06 pm : link
JPP's 14.8 minus Walton's cap savings, leaves us where to date?
So
AcidTest : 3/2/2015 4:07 pm : link
much for that experiment.
McClain
Carl in CT : 3/2/2015 4:07 pm : link
Might be next.
Given the JPP tag
giantgiantfan : 3/2/2015 4:07 pm : link
this is not surprising. Opens up a hole at Center and entrenches Richburg as the starter. He wasn't very good so we can find someone at least as bad as him for cheaper as the backup.
SHould be $3 mil savings...
Dunedin81 : 3/2/2015 4:07 pm : link
$3.625 number, residual $625 of dead money.
Nothing to see here.
Victor in CT : 3/2/2015 4:08 pm : link
buh-BYE.
.
bceagle05 : 3/2/2015 4:08 pm : link
Keep swinging that axe.
What a shit signing
Mr. Bungle : 3/2/2015 4:09 pm : link
that was.
Go to the dictionary look up stop gap
Headhunter : 3/2/2015 4:09 pm : link

Ok, so now we're at about 11 re JPP, with Jones as reserve C

May already be on the roster ...Brett Jones
McClain
bc4life : 3/2/2015 4:09 pm : link
had value, maybe not as much as we would like, but he contributed
Let's sign him again just so we can cut him.
BeerFridge : 3/2/2015 4:09 pm : link
he sucks.
Thank goodness
NYGmen58 : 3/2/2015 4:09 pm : link
I feel bad for him personally, as he seemed like a good guy and gave it his all but he was one of the worst regular starters the Giants have had on the offensive line in quite some time.

I mean there were plays he would get thrown around like a rag doll! What a woeful center!
LOL, that signing.
Dave in Hoboken : 3/2/2015 4:10 pm : link

Guess he didn't want to play for the vet minimum?
Damon : 3/2/2015 4:12 pm : link
Is that how it played out E? Wasn't that the third of the last round of info you posted a few weeks back?

True Dave. Better to laugh than cry..........
Remember Dallas Reynolds
ij_reilly : 3/2/2015 4:13 pm : link
Brett Jones is an interesting signing. But he needs NFL conditioning. He might really struggle.

Dallas Reynolds is signed, so those two will compete. It's for a backup spot, but competition is good.
Pencil in Richburg at center for now
jlukes : 3/2/2015 4:13 pm : link
good
Beason next
Rflairr : 3/2/2015 4:16 pm : link
7.2 cap number.
McClain
SLIM_ : 3/2/2015 4:17 pm : link
has some physical limitations but can start in this league.

The other guys that the Giants cut either have injury concerns (Hillis/Kiwi) and/or just are not very good NFL players at this point (Hillis/Kiwi/Walton).

Makes sense, can't give that much money to a guy you can't trust to stay healthy. That money is flushed down the drain if he gets injured.
How
Metnut : 3/2/2015 4:18 pm : link
much cap room would we save by cutting Beason? I feel like it might be in both sides best interest to work out a restructure with Beason.

Caught a blurb about Beason saying he'd be willing to take a pay cut..How much, was not clear
Per Graziano - save 2.85 mil if Beason gets cut
knicks3031 : 3/2/2015 4:22 pm : link
@DanGrazianoESPN: Not random. Entirely possible. $2.858M. RT @nygcruz80: @DanGrazianoESPN random but how much cap do the giants save if Beason's cut?
Walton
Fast Eddie : 3/2/2015 4:23 pm : link
Would have been much better if they gave him some cleats instead of those roller skates
serviceable player
bc4life : 3/2/2015 4:24 pm : link
when he entered the league - that injury really did a job on his career.
There was no way Walton was getting his $750K roster bonus.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/2/2015 4:24 pm : link
The question was whether he would give enough ground to hang around and compete for a roster spot. Now we know the answer.

I suppose Ayers and McClain will get their money next week, though neither is a sure thing. IIRC, the payout schedule for Beason's roster cash is irregular. If he's due a big lump sum next week, his agent (Jon Beason) will be busy the next few days.
should have ~$12.7M in space after this and JPP tag
giants#1 : 3/2/2015 4:25 pm : link
just go to overthecap's calculator and "cut" Walton to see the impact (JPP already looks tagged)

A Beason cut would only save $2.8M. They could probably save close to that or more (for 2015) by restructuring Beason. Though obviously there's risk there...

Beason broke his mouth saying that he will take a pay cut

Thank god

Quite possibly the worst center in the NFL last year.

J.D. Walton Released by New York Giants - ( New Window )
As bad as he played, I'm still a little surprised
Matt M. : 3/2/2015 4:28 pm : link
I guess there is a cap savings, which I wasn't expecting. The good news is now there is no doubt Richburg is the starting OC. The bad news is there is no backup.
You mean one of the highest rated centers in last year draft may...
Mason : 3/2/2015 4:28 pm : link
gulp... play center?

CFL all-pro Jones and Dallas Reynolds..For now
almost
Mr. Nickels : 3/2/2015 4:29 pm : link
any other coach would have just started richburg day one. Walton was a stopgap.
well
djm : 3/2/2015 4:29 pm : link
that certainly didn't work out. Walton was bad last year.

it amazes me
antdog24 : 3/2/2015 4:31 pm : link
given how bad he played that they stuck with him to the bitter end.
forget this year
djm : 3/2/2015 4:32 pm : link
I believe cutting Beason opens up money NEXT year too.

Unless Beason agrees to a dramatic pay cut he's history. He just might agree though because who else is going to pay him...

Are we allowed to declare this a bad signing yet?
Makes sense for him not to take a pay cut
BillT : 3/2/2015 4:33 pm : link
With Richburg he wasn't gointi

I wouldn't ink Weston Richburg into the starting center spot yet, but you can push really hard on the pencil if you'd like.

@DanGrazianoESPN 4 minutes ago
@TomRock_Newsday Right cuz they got that Canadian dude. Remember the day they signed that Canadian dude? Good times.

‏@TomRock_Newsday 3 minutes ago
@DanGrazianoESPN And re-signed Dallas Reynolds.

What does it tell you a 16 games healthy starter gets cut for less
johnnygiants1114 : 3/2/2015 4:33 pm : link
than 3 million cap numbers...huge disconnect between FO and Coaching staff in terms of players and playing time/starters....
Sorry
BillT : 3/2/2015 4:34 pm : link
He want going to be more than a backup. He could get a better chance somewhere else.n
It wasn't a terrible signing
mrvax : 3/2/2015 4:34 pm : link
I'm sure the Giants hoped he'd be better but they didn't want to run with a rookie center with the shit Oline. I can't blame them.

I wonder if the Giants made him a vet minimum offer and he said, "no"? He'd be good to have on the bench in an emergency. I think the only 2 centers we have right now are Richburg and the CFL guy, neither of whom have taken an NFL snap at center.

Yikes.
it's not easy to just bench a guy
djm : 3/2/2015 4:35 pm : link
maybe the Giants felt, or hoped that Walton was going to improve as the season progressed. Some guys do take time to adjust and Walton was not only playing for a new team he was coming off injury. Some guys look like dog shit and then turn the corner. And the Giants obviously felt that Walton at center and Richburg at guard was the best OL they could field.

Bad signing. Move on.
yeah, that was a great move
nyynyg : 3/2/2015 4:36 pm : link
pay money to a guy that weakened the line, put your rookie C out of position and don't give him a year of learning the NFL as this natural position, great work.
I hate

Not really. Even if they benched Walton and moved Richburg (who struggled at times) to center, who the hell was playing LG? Richburg didn't play LG because he was a rookie and the coaching staff stubbornly stuck with the vet OC. He played LG because the LG backup was worse (at least in the coaching staff's estimation) than Walton.

Hold on, sir. We might need a few more weeks to properly analyze this. Thank you for your patience. -Certain folks
