How do you view the Beckham one handed TD catch?

Sean : 3/2/2015 9:21 pm
It has gotten a tremendous amount of fanfare since it happened and you see it all over top ten lists and social media. While it was an incredible catch, it doesn't excite me all that much...but the casual NFL highlight fan loves it. I associate that catch with a 3-7 team.

That is a play that will move the needle among today's sports fan. While a play below barely gets a second look among today's modern sports fan.

man if they could have stayed healthy together.

As to your point, I kind of agree. Great play but not important.
I think its amazing

That Eli Manning has been at the throwing end of three of the most amazing catches in NFL history......thats what I think!

No shit. I was talking to a Seahawks friend of mine about this yesterday and he was like "didn't you guys lose that game" and I was like "yeah, that losing game was the highlight of our season"

depressing hahaha.
I view it as

the moment I realized Beckham was a superstar.
The stadium was electric
Hammer : 3/3/2015 1:54 am : link
when he made that catch.

For me, it changed the complexion of the whole season. It made, or was the beginning of making, a 6-10 season into something which gave me hope for the future.
Years from now..

I'll probably forget the final score (I hope so!), but I'll never forget that catch or the sense I had, at that moment, that the Giants had drafted a legitimate superstar.
Beckham one handed grab is like

LT and breaking joe theismann's leg on Monday Night Football. Everyone remembers the hit but I remember that the Giants lost the game.
That catch was

super-atheletic.

Some of Toomer's toe-tappers as he fell backwards to the sideline were super-skilled. Don't know of any receivers who could toe-tap better than Amani.
you've got to be kidding me

that catch was all that baby -- it has not only a hall of fame moment - but it immediately elevated the team and made OBJ a sizzling portent of things to come

do you realize that people come to Giants stadium now and to practice -- just to try and see a repeat of that catch

OBJ is a bonafide top 5 star in the NFL now because of that catch - and he's ours

and we start out next season knowing we have an amazing threat on offense on every play he's out there for
The catch
River Mike : 3/3/2015 8:01 am : link
stands on its own merit regardless of the game circumstances. Watching the game, my brother and I were celebrating the PI call when we heard the commentator say, "I don't know how he caught that!". We both exclaimed in disbelief "He caught it?!". It was one of the most unbelievable athletic feats I have ever seen. The Tyree catch, along with a host of others achieves the level of greatness in large part because of game circumstances, the Beckham catch achieves that level on its own.
A Franchise perception changer
Headhunter : 3/3/2015 8:10 am : link
everyone wants to see Beckham. He has become must see TV because of that catch. If I'm in Buttfuck Nebraska I want to see OBJ in Prime Time
It was a great catch but
jeffusedtobeonwebtv : 3/3/2015 8:23 am : link
not an all time great catch because they lost the game.
I view it as an amazing moment
jpkmets : 3/3/2015 8:30 am : link
in a frustrating season. Not only was it a great catch, but it wasn't a "lucky" great play. It was all ability, and the man was under complete control as he made it. It was a kind of "notice is served" moment, and promised great things for the future. It was a big ray of light.

The Giants
St. Jimmy : 3/3/2015 8:33 am : link
lost so I don't really care. It was like any of the good things that happened this year, they are overshadowed by how bad this year was. In fact that game was one of the top two or three annoying loses of the year, because the end of the game pretty much summed up the Giants over the last three years.
No doubt the most athletically spectacular catch ever...
jsuds : 3/3/2015 8:34 am : link
Yes it cemented Beckham as a superstar in this league and portends incredibly well for the future of Eli, the Giants, their fans etc. It started the icon ball rolling for ODB JR.

I am convinced his being paired with Eli can propel the Giants to another championship in Eli's final few years.

I just have one concern though; I am hoping the hype doesn't go to ODB JR's head and warp his career. So far he has handled it well and for me his performance this season will go far toward answering my one question.
I'm with the OP.
Wellington : 3/3/2015 8:35 am : link
Was having Sunday dinner with my parents when it happened and remember sitting there saying "There's no F*cking way he just did that". It was amazing to see live, but after that it's just whatever. Especially having lost the game.

The highlight the OP posted bothers me in that I wish those guys would have stayed healthy and played together. Eli to Manningham was so good in that playoff run, and it had to be since defenses were taking Cruz and Nicks away. What a playoff run that was.
Tee fact that the Giants sucked shouldn't negate the brilliance
Section331 : 3/3/2015 8:43 am : link
of that play. I was at that game, and yeah, I was pissed we lost (especially to effing DALLAS!), but that doesn't make Odell's catch any less spectacular.

Rather than focusing on the catch being part of a dismal season, I look at it as the maturation of a dynamic superstar, who is a sign of bright things to come.

It's not an all time great catch because they lost?

That I do not understand. Him catching that pass and losing a game. I don't see a correlation
Please explain how the catch
Headhunter : 3/3/2015 8:46 am : link
is diminished 1 iota based on the outcome of the game? In 50 years from now when they are showing it for the millionth replay, do you think the outcome of the game will be mentioned?
It was the best
cokeduplt : 3/3/2015 8:56 am : link
catch I've ever seen regardless of the outcome of the game, some of u guys find reasons to be miserable it seems
Why do I get the feeling..

We've all seen great catches before
Milton : 3/3/2015 9:14 am : link
And those that occur at pivotal moments in pivotal games are the ones that stand the test of time. But OBJ's wasn't just a great catch, it was an impossible catch. And as others have stated, it was also a signature moment that a new superstar had arrived on the scene. It will stand the test of time.

I'm not going to list everything out that I will remember but that catch would be one of them.

This.

Still a Sam Huff fan : 3/3/2015 9:47 am : link
Stop it. Stop it you idiots. If you follow that logic all the way through, then any season that you don't win the Super Bowl is a failing season. Any player that is not All Pro is stinks.
Well,

That's why you get a financial planner, like all NFL players do.... :)
To me it was something that gave relevance and hope
Mike in Long Beach : 3/3/2015 10:02 am : link
to what would normally be an irrelevant and forgettable football season (and gives hope for our organization moving forward).

Normally I subscribe to the theory that nothing matters beyond the success of the football team as a whole, but this was such a polarizing moment that I can't help but be proud one of our guys was the culprit.
Really good catch
Randy in CT : 3/3/2015 10:28 am : link
during a loss. I think we, and OBJ, need to move on from it and try to piece together a winning season including some post-season action.
think back a moment
rmonzo : 3/3/2015 11:09 am : link
after seeing that catch, whenever LT was on the field and how proud we felt that he was ours, now we have OBJ.

Nice catch, looks great on TV in a montage. But my team lost, so who cares?

Imagine Giants lost SB 42...wasnt that helmet catch great though?

PaulBlakeTSU : 3/3/2015 11:37 am : link
the Manning-to-Manningham TD was a great, thrilling moment, but it is routine. It was a routine throw and a routine catch. Every team that wins playoff games, particularly close ones, has a TD play that they consider to be as big as any in their football history. But that is because it was a tide-turning moment that helped them advance to a Super Bowl.

Beckham's catch has nothing to do with that, but rather a display of insane athleticism and ability. One of the reasons we watch sports is to be dazzled by people doing things which we didn't think were possible. Even in sports, with these genetic freaks, we think we've seen it all until someone like Beckham arrives and does something that makes you question if what you saw actually happened.

Beckham's catch was further shot into another stratosphere because we haven't seen a career arc from Beckham because he was only a rookie who missed camp and the first four weeks and so he was still an unknown quantity. After seeing that catch, the world knew Beckham and are eagerly awaiting to see what he can do next.
Gloves
Bones : 3/3/2015 12:21 pm : link
Need to be banned. From WRs and QBs. They obviously offer a huge advantage. Bare handed, I doubt he makes that catch.
I view it as ancient history....
CBSGameFace : 3/3/2015 1:24 pm : link
Nice to look back on, but has ZERO to do with the Giants and OBJ's future. Not an anomaly, per se, but also nothing to be constantly opining on.
everybody wears gloves

but there aren't many guys who could've made that catch
