Graziano: Walter Thurmond Expected to Sign Elsewhere

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/3/2015 9:53 am
Don't know if he knows something or speculating...
What next for the Giants' other free agents? - ( New Window )
That
AcidTest : 3/3/2015 9:56 am : link
sucks.
He sounds like he knows something when he says
jcn56 : 3/3/2015 9:57 am : link
'talks have gone nowhere', so maybe it's not just speculation.
Too bad, that's one of those signings
Ben in Tampa : 3/3/2015 9:57 am : link
where everyone - organization, player, fans - wanted a lot more. Just didn't happen. Injuries suck.
I'd like to retain Thurmond
JonC : 3/3/2015 9:57 am : link
but I'd let the rest go, they're exactly the players we need to upgrade from, with the exception of Rolle whom I just wouldn't pay big any longer.
I have to be honest
Danny Kanell : 3/3/2015 9:58 am : link
He was great in that
pjcas18 : 3/3/2015 9:59 am : link
one game he played in.

thank you Walter Thurmond thread?
Let them all go
Curtis in VA : 3/3/2015 9:59 am : link
.
Sounds like he's guessing on Thurmond
Torrag : 3/3/2015 9:59 am : link
Just because a guy tests the market doesn't mean he won't return. Torn pectoral muscle isn't chronic. He should make a full recovery and be ready for training camp. IMO there is a good chance he returns...and why not...we have a need at slot corner.
I could totally see
FranknWeezer : 3/3/2015 10:00 am : link
Rolle to Miami.
that means
Andy in Boston : 3/3/2015 10:01 am : link
CB could be a slight need now.
Conflicting reports
Brandon Walsh : 3/3/2015 10:02 am : link
Raanan said last week he's expected to re-sign. Supposedly loves New York as he is very into fashion and art. Link below

We'll see.

I'm glad we have some lead time...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/3/2015 10:02 am : link
...to draft our tributes for the Appreciation Thread.

Thurmond was paid $1.5MM per game played, $750K per tackle. I would calculate a price per interception or pass defended, but he didn't have any.

Full disclosure: I really liked that signing. Sigh.
Giants
Andy in Boston : 3/3/2015 10:02 am : link
might be high on Chykie Brown and Mike Harris. They played OK at the end of last year when forced into action
The Redskins could take another run at him
Defenderdawg : 3/3/2015 10:04 am : link
"But a more realistic target could be Walter Thurmond III, who like Rolle played for Fewell in New York last season. McCloughan and the Seahawks took Thurmond in the fourth round of the 2010 draft, and Washington pursued Thurmond last year, but lost out on him to the Giants."

"Making another run at Thurmond makes sense. He is viewed as a talented nickelback, which would suit Washington’s purposes well. That’s the greatest need with Breeland and Amerson on the outside. Thurmond would be a good insurance policy in case Hall doesn’t make a full recovery. Like Porter, however, Thurmond has had injury issues much of his career. However, that could mean he comes at a more affordable price. The team also should look to draft another cornerback."

And yes
Danny Kanell : 3/3/2015 10:05 am : link
Im absolutely all for letting all of those players walk, including Rolle.

Rolle's play pretty drastically declined in 2014 compared to 2013. Id prefer a low to mid level signing of a young S in a deep FA class at that position.
I didn't see it in Seattle
Joey in VA : 3/3/2015 10:06 am : link
I didn't see it in his brief time last year. He's a beneficiary of that defensive talent, he's not a part of it.

He's an above average at best CB, which isn't bad he's just not worth a ton of money.
The safety positions are really scary to me
Defenderdawg : 3/3/2015 10:07 am : link
The draft is weak and free agent markets are thin and teams like Indianapolis and Chicago are almost as bad off as the Giants.
We didn't sign him for 'a ton of money'
Torrag : 3/3/2015 10:09 am : link
He got a decent contract $3.5m. He's been injury prone but has performed well when healthy. I'm normally against re-signing injury cases but in this instance I'd be open to his return. I'd guess he's 50/50 to be back. That's just a hunch.

.
Vin R : 3/3/2015 10:15 am : link
I like Thurmond
GiantsFan84 : 3/3/2015 10:16 am : link
but Thurmond has an injury history that is just as bad if not worse than Beason's. You can't spend $3M on him again and he probably doesn't want a pay cut.
Prediction...
rocco8112 : 3/3/2015 10:21 am : link
he will go to the team that pays him the most.

Hard to care about a guy who played one game.
Well this forces a CB pick
#10* : 3/3/2015 10:37 am : link
As long as I get a shiny new RB, TE, and OT(Draft/FA) for our offense I'll be happy.

Defense: DT, S.

Total NYG Draft Needs:

OT, DT, TE, RB, S, WR, CB - 7 Picks.

Keep JPP and DE is not a need with Wynn, Ayers and Moore in the wings.
body type
area junc : 3/3/2015 10:43 am : link
if u look at the type of slot CB Spags uses, its a big body who will blitz A LOT off the edge and has to be a physical guy who can take a pounding. do not think thurmond fits the bill

he used rookies Ross and T2 there with Giants. i look for us to add somebody like that in the draft. no surprise we were looking at josh shaw and i can see us liking jaelen collins if he's there in round 2.

I Really hope the Giants pursue Rahim Moore.
you can only devote so much $

at a given position - DRC and Prince's upcoming contract will = significant $ at that position.
Thurmond is the one guy I'd like to retain

Good call.

Jaelen Collins has the best combination of size/speed/ 3-cone measurables and top college production of any CB in the draft IMO.

Would love him (along with a few other guys) at 40.
I agree with JonC's assessment

Total sacks by Ram cornerbacks in three years under Spagnuolo: one, by Justin King, who was all of 5'11 185".

Total sacks by Ross and Thomas under Spagnuolo: 1.5, by Ross in 2007. Sam Madison also had one in 2007. Corey Webster had the the only CB sack in 2008.

I don't recall a single sack from the slot during Spagnuolo's tenure, and I can't imagine pass-rush ability ranks very high on his criteria for the Giants' slot corner in 2015.

Spagnuolo does send his corners from time to time. So does every defensive coordinator. We're not exactly talking Monte Kiffin in Ronde Barber's prime. Mostly, Spagnuolo's cornerbacks cover.

Over 5 seasons he has played in 36 of the 60 games with 1 INT, 15 passes defensed & 1 sack! Let the Jets sign him for more than he is worth. RIP!

I didn't like too much of what I saw from him in his limited time last year. Missing tackles, getting beaten in coverage. I don't care if he walks.
Funny, we complain
Doomster : 3/3/2015 11:52 am : link
about paying Beason 6M for 4 games, but don't blink when paying Thurmond 3.5M for one game....this was talked about when he was signed last year....a lot of money for another guy who can't stay on the field...that's 1.75M per tackle.....
Now, let's not exaggerate.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/3/2015 11:55 am : link
Thurmond took $3MM of Mr. Mara's money, not $3.5MM. I think it's safe to assume he missed out on the $500K playing time incentive.
Let Thurmond go
mrvax : 3/3/2015 12:11 pm : link
Play the kids we finished the end of the year with like C. Brown & that other guy Harris? Get younger, maybe healthier to avoid dipping into backup players as much as possible.

It's almost as if you place a starter on IR, you can add 1 more L to the column.

Injuries can't be excuses, I understand that. However, injuries can be the indirect reason you lose games. Backup players playing when they should be on the bench.
let him walk

Thus we only paid him 1.5M per tackle....actually, 750K per tackle, forgot the two big assists....

not really what? he hand-picked 2 big players for the slot when he was here. (both ross and T2 were drafted into his scheme). and yes, he blitzed them frequently. what is there to disagree with?
Spags had little to do with the selections of Ross and T2
Mason : 3/3/2015 1:34 pm : link
Giants were looking at CB going into the 07 off-season when Lewis was still DC and T2 was on the scouts radar when scouting Steve Smith in 07.

They still have McBride and may be impressed by how Brown and Harris looked the final couple games. Thurmond isn't really a great player, let's not put him on some pedestal. I would like to re-sign him too, but only at a cost. Prefer them to use more money on a starting Safety and look to extend Prince.
Zach Bowman
ColHowPepper : 3/3/2015 5:27 pm : link
I would not mind seeing him back; he got beat some, but he also had a bunch of plays when he had excellent coverage. A little more experience and he's reasonable depth. Could wish he were more physical, but physical he's not.
