Raanan: What He is Hearing on Who Stays/Goes...

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/4/2015 9:24 am
After talking to people around the league and in the Giants organization, here is one man's informed opinion (subject to change based on price tag, market value, etc.) on who will "stay" or "go" over the next few weeks.

Stay:
S Stevie Brown
LB Mark Herzlich
FB Henry Hynoski
LB Spencer Paysinger
OL John Jerry

Go:
CB Zack Bowman
CB Chykie Brown
OL James Brewer
S Quintin Demps
TE Daniel Fells
RB Chris Ogbonnaya
WR Jerrel Jernigan
DT Mike Patterson
S Antrel Rolle
OL Adam Snyder
CB Walter Thurmond
LB Jacquian Williams

Herzlich? Why?
Bold Ruler : Mod : 3/4/2015 9:27 am : link
Guy doesn't deserve an active roster spot. The worst LB on the team by a mile and not particularly good on specials. He's the Tom Quinn of players.
I don't like the stay list,
Curtis in VA : 3/4/2015 9:27 am : link
except for maybe Paysinger and Hynoski.

Also surprised Chykie Brown would be one of those to be going.
I like Daniel Fells as well

I'm looking for Fasano replacing Fells
ij_reilly : 3/4/2015 9:28 am : link
if Fells is indeed gone.
I hope he's on target
JonC : 3/4/2015 9:30 am : link
This roster needs those upgrades, and they'll have the cap space in '16 to structure UFA contracts accordingly. It's time to infuse with new blood, better talent, in order to take a step beyond an 8-9 ceiling.

It's time for a repeat of the 2005 offseason. BIG TUESDAY!
I can't believe Herzlich will be back
Greg from LI : 3/4/2015 9:31 am : link
The guy simply isn't an NFL linebacker.

I think this is overdoing it. He's damned good on specials and actually can make plays at LB even though he lacks some coverage ability. He ain't that bad.
I don't see anyone on either list who represents a huge loss.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/4/2015 9:33 am : link
The "Stay" list is fine, as long as none of those players gets more than a one-year qualifying deal. I would say the same about most of the "Go" list.

Stevie Brown should look better after another year post-surgery. I'm still baffled by the money he's been paid - especially last year. Herzlich has improved, though his ceiling still seems pretty low. Paysinger hit his ceiling years ago. Hynoski is OK, as long as he can stay on the field; his role is small, and he plays it pretty well. Jerry is mediocre depth. He's easy to hate because he was starting when he shouldn't have been.
Im not saying he's terrible on specials I'm saying he isn't that great
Bold Ruler : Mod : 3/4/2015 9:34 am : link
There's no way his LB play could account for him taking a roster spot, so it must be specials. And his specials play is meh. I dunno, the teams just seems committed to him for reasons other than his on the field play.
I'm fine with keeping Robinson and letting Fells walk.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/4/2015 9:37 am : link
The Giants got surprising mileage out of Fells after pulling him off his couch. He was never more than a stopgap.
so we need 2 starting safties
mookskingdom20 : 3/4/2015 9:39 am : link
In an off season with a weak FA crop and a weak draft class, awesome.. better get rahim Moore as I have scoured who all will be available as of now and I can't find any other rangey cover guy
except mccourty ofc
mookskingdom20 : 3/4/2015 9:40 am : link
But I think I'd rather go big on suh
Thurmond is the only one I'd like to keep
BillT : 3/4/2015 9:41 am : link
Otherwise none of that is surprising. I thought Brown was coming on at the end of the year and Herzlich was playing better as well.
I'd like Jernigan and Thurmond to stay
Sonic Youth : 3/4/2015 9:41 am : link
It costs nothing to bring Jernigan to camp. Who knows, maybe he'll show what he flashed at the end of 2013. He can be a backup slot WR, I suppose. Wish he could contribute more on specials though. But shit, a camp invite? Might as well.

Thurmond... just want to see what he brings to the table. Last year was as much of a wash as a wash can be.
wouldn't be upset with this but...
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/4/2015 9:41 am : link
Chykie Brown should stay. Stevie Brown should go.

and I agree Herz should go.
Cubed
JonC : 3/4/2015 9:42 am : link
Stevie for almost $3M last year had to be an insurance payment of sorts to him. But, I'm expecting another one if they're keeping him. Let's hope Spags can cure Stevie's gambling habits.
Herzlich is a decent backup OLB and a below-average backup MIKE.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/4/2015 9:42 am : link
He's a "plus" special-teams player, though by no means a great one. That's good enough for a one-year qualifying deal, period. If another team offers more, wish him well. If he stays, and a replacement emerges in pre-season, great.
Jernigan sucks. And it does cost something. It shows that draft picks
Victor in CT : 3/4/2015 9:43 am : link
are on perma-scholarship until their rookie contracts expire. He is terrible.
The key is
Jolly Blue Giant : 3/4/2015 9:44 am : link
"Over the next few weeks".....all players on that list will have to compete for a roster spot post draft and free agency.
will be sorry to see Rolle go
mfsd : 3/4/2015 9:46 am : link
but Reese has been right about letting some other guys go rather than overpaying them as they age

Most of the other names on the "go" list are just guys. Better to save cap space to try and upgrade.
I'm happy their staying patient with Stevie Brown
cosmicj : 3/4/2015 9:47 am : link
remember that the guy is a conversion project from college LB so he has a lot to learn. Though he's 27, he has logged what amounts to just one year at Safety in the NFL. I certainly understand Jon's comments about his instincts but he's also shown enough promise - and big play ability - to warrant more time.
The player on that list that surprises me is Chykie Brown
cosmicj : 3/4/2015 9:48 am : link
I suspect Ranaan may be wrong on that point.
Victor: Jernigan's contract already expired.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/4/2015 9:48 am : link
The question is whether his "scholarship" gets extended for a fifth year of eligibility. I actually wouldn't mind seeing him compete with Preston Parker and Marcus Harris for a backup spot - especially since the the star slot receiver in front of them is coming off major surgery.
I'm in the " Keep Herzlich " camp
Rjanyg : 3/4/2015 9:49 am : link
He actually played his best football last year. He is a solid special teamer, can back up at SLB and MLB. That said, we are adding at least 2 new linebackers to the roster this offseason, not including Butler. Kennard, Beason, McClain, Bulter, Herzlich will be 5 of the 7 we keep. DeOssie only playing specials is the only reason we keep 6 LB.
Why keep
Giants : 3/4/2015 9:49 am : link
LB Spencer Paysinger and OL John Jerry they are useless
When your strategy for team building is to....
Racer : 3/4/2015 9:49 am : link
...go certified pre-owned on the first row of the depth chart at linebacker, you're not going to find a lot of young guys on your roster who can beat out the Herzlich's of the world.
...
Chris684 : 3/4/2015 9:52 am : link
of the go list I'd like to keep Fells, Thurmond and Rolle for the right price.

The stay list is really depressing outside of Hyno. Maybe one of Herzlich/Paysinger for depth/specials but both?

Damned good? Hardly. He is an average special teams player with decent tackling skills. He is a below average NFL linebacker.

They're depth. Decent backups at vet min salaries. And they could be beat out in camp but you need to fill the roster with guys who have some potential and see where it goes.
Well, Herzlich is supposedly our smartest linebacker
jcn56 : 3/4/2015 9:54 am : link
So if the NFL switches to a 'pop quiz instead of kickoff' format, advantage Giants.
Chykie Brown
RetroJint : 3/4/2015 9:55 am : link
was already cut once from a team Spagnuolo was on. Doubtful he would be kept in that situation, however unfair that might seem. C. Brown, unlike many Giants, can run. Stevie Brown has been a waste of time his entire career except for his Willie Williams-like high interception '12 with the Giants. He wasn't anything with the Raiders or Colts before the Giants so please don't start in on Fewell. He did, however, play well as a gunner on punts. Still I think they are keeping the wrong Brown.

Herzlich is a solid special teams player. Witness wrestling the on-sides kick away from the Niner. They shouldn't keep both Paysinger & him. Herzlich is at least, nominally, able to play more linebacker roles than PayLess.
Glad to see cutting bait with JJ and, YES, Brewer
ColHowPepper : 3/4/2015 9:59 am : link
JJ over four years had one or two decent games. PParker has already shown he's way more valuable, hardnosed, as a 5th receiver (6th?) than JJ ever was or will be.

Thank you heavens that we won't have to discuss Brewer's upside, his LT feet, his "what am I doing out here?" look when he is put into the game because of injury.

All these cuts only work if Reese and Ross get better at the drafts post Round 1. Teflon GM and Director/VP of college scouting.
I was way down on Herzlich
regulator : 3/4/2015 9:59 am : link
but toward the end of the season, I thought he was at least serviceable in certain situations. He is not an NFL starter, but he's a quality locker room guy, a good special teamer, and cheap depth. I don't disagree with hanging on to him. A team needs a few guys like that.
Retro
cosmicj : 3/4/2015 10:00 am : link
your comments about Stevie Brown ignore the fact that he was an LB at Michigan so is a conversion project in the NFL who has bounced around and then got injured after the 2012 season with New York.
With Cruz uncertain
Andy in Halifax : 3/4/2015 10:02 am : link
I kinda hoped we'd bring back JJ to back up the slot position. I know we move OBJ around but I think JJ would have been better in the new system and provided good insurance against Cruz's recovery.
If a WR target is available in the first 3 rounds
JonC : 3/4/2015 10:07 am : link
NYG is very likely to draft him, I expect it to happen. Harris might have shown more than Jernigan as well. Point is, I think they can replace Jernigan's ability without great pain.
Why bring back Brown?
Jay on the Island : 3/4/2015 10:09 am : link
I know the depth at safety is non-existent but he is just not a good player. Even during his 8 interception season he didn't play well. He was beaten deep several times that year. He also seems to be involved in a lot of broken plays where a WR runs free. Week one last year was a great example on a play where DRC was releasing Calvin Johnson to Brown and Brown just didn't cover Johnson he just let Johnson loose as well despite the fact that there wasn't another receiver in his vicinity.

Brown played fairly well.

Herzlich actually started to make a few more plays, but, I seem to recall him having some assignment issues, which is troubling for a "smart" LB.

Agreed. Keeping both is depressing. Herzlich? Eh. Not an NFL LB, but decent on ST. I could see letting go of Paysinger as well.

Toth029 : 3/4/2015 10:21 am : link
The Stay List is questionable. I wouldn't hate having Herzlich for depth at SLB and on ST's, but they need to build up the team's linebacker depth so he is not relied on to start more than two games. Same for Paysinger, although he has thoroughly regressed in my mind.

John Jerry I didn't think played too terribly. He had trouble at both RT for a portion of the season and of course a weak link at Center. For depth he's decent. For starting, weak fringe starter. He could challenge guys like Jones for the backup G spot.

It kind of stinks seeing Fells on the Gone List. He played really well, I thought, and was cheap.
Jerry was inconsistent
bc4life : 3/4/2015 10:23 am : link
Some horrific games, some okay. and there was the injury thing and the new offensive system. and he's cheap.

all those excuses won't be there this year, so they are probably willing to roll the dice on an inexpensive player.

and again - the article is speculative.
Fells

Not really. If he isn't healthy or if he still sucks, he can get cut in one of the initial roster cutdowns.

he was hurt pretty much all last year and ended 2013 decently. I'd at least bring him to camp on a vet min deal. It can't hurt, and at least he's flashed semi recently.
Jerry is decent for a back-up
Coach Mason : 3/4/2015 10:28 am : link
and might not be terrible if your other 4 starting OL are strong.

Have no issue keeping him provided he is meant for depth (which is the likely scenario)
Yikes.
